Sometimes—but there is no universal break-even point. A subscription can cost less if you play several games you genuinely want while they are included. Buying games individually can be cheaper if you want only a few, keep playing them over a long period, or value having a copy that remains yours to access. The fair comparison is the cost of the exact subscription and the games you would actually buy over the same period.
How to work out which option costs less
- Set the time period. Compare, for example, the next 12 months—not a year of subscription fees against an indefinite period of game ownership.
- Price the exact plan. Use the current price for your country, platform, membership tier, and intended subscription length.
- List the games you actually expect to play. Count a game only if it is available on your platform, in your region, and in the tier you would choose. Check the catalog before subscribing.
- Compare like with like. Add the current individual prices for those games using the same platform and editions. Consider sale, used, or physical-copy prices only if those are options you would really choose.
- Value extra benefits realistically. If you would otherwise pay for online multiplayer or another included feature, show that value separately. Do not count a benefit just because the plan includes it.
- Account for access after the period. Purchased games may remain available to you, while subscription access depends on membership and catalog terms. Include future play in your decision, but do not assign an arbitrary value to it.
If your planned purchases cost more than the subscription over the matched period, the subscription is cheaper in immediate cash terms. That does not automatically make it better value: the subscription’s included games, access window, and benefits have to fit how you play.

When a subscription is more likely to save money
- You plan to play several included games within a defined stretch of time.
- The games you want are in your chosen tier and region, and you expect to finish or enjoy them before they leave the catalog.
- You will use included features—such as online multiplayer—that you would otherwise pay for separately.
- You can share an eligible family membership, bringing the cost per participating account down.
Catalog headline counts are not a measure of personal value. Xbox’s plan pages described 500+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, 50+ for Essential, and 300+ for PC Game Pass when checked on October 4, 2026; those figures are vendor descriptions, not a promise that a particular title is available to you. PlayStation describes Extra’s Game Catalog as hundreds of games, also subject to catalog terms. Compare the specific games you want rather than the size of the advertised library.

When buying individually is more likely to cost less
- You are interested in only one or two games, especially if you can buy them on sale or used.
- You expect to replay a game or keep playing it well beyond the period you would otherwise subscribe.
- You want continued access without maintaining an active membership or relying on a title staying in a catalog.
- You prefer a physical copy, where available, and value having the disc or cartridge.
Individual game prices vary by title, edition, platform, retailer, and sale. Compare the price for the edition you would actually buy; a subscription’s cost is not directly comparable to a game’s full retail price if you would normally wait for a discount.

What U.S. subscription examples show
The following official U.S. prices and plan descriptions were accessed October 4, 2026. They illustrate how different these services are; they are not a cross-platform break-even calculation. Prices and catalogs can change, so check the live regional offer before deciding.
| Service and plan | U.S. price shown | What matters to this comparison |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Essential | $79.99 for 12 months | Includes monthly games and online multiplayer. PlayStation says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026. |
| PlayStation Plus Extra | $134.99 for 12 months | Includes Essential benefits and access to a Game Catalog described as hundreds of games. Catalog titles may have end dates. |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | $159.99 for 12 months | Adds a Classics Catalog, game trials, and streaming features to lower-tier benefits. |
| Nintendo Switch Online individual | $19.99 per year | Includes compatible online play and a curated NES, Super NES, and Game Boy library; it is not an all-new-release game catalog. |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack individual | $49.99 per year | Adds selected GameCube, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and SEGA Genesis classics, plus selected upgrade packs or DLC. Some DLC requires the full game. |
| Nintendo Switch Online family | $34.99 per year for up to eight accounts | Sharing can substantially reduce the per-person cost if multiple accounts use the membership. |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack family | $79.99 per year for up to eight accounts | Sharing can substantially reduce the per-person cost if multiple accounts use the membership. |
| Xbox Game Pass | Price not stated on the captured official plan page; check the live local price | Xbox advertised 500+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, 50+ for Essential, and 300+ for PC Game Pass when checked. Counts and availability vary by plan and other terms. |
These plans do not offer identical things. Nintendo Switch Online emphasizes online play, a curated classics library, cloud saves for compatible games, and other benefits; its Expansion Pack adds more classics and selected DLC. PlayStation’s tiers combine different catalog and service benefits. For Xbox, use the live price shown for your account and region rather than an old figure.

Membership and catalog access can change the calculation
Xbox Game Pass
Xbox says access lasts until a membership is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the catalog. It also says titles, number, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. Recurring billing is on by default, so check the renewal setting and next billing date when subscribing. In an April 21, 2026 announcement, Xbox said future Call of Duty titles would not join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch and would instead arrive during the following holiday season, about a year later. Already included Call of Duty titles would remain available subject to normal catalog terms.

PlayStation says Game Catalog games may have end dates. Add-ons purchased for a catalog game become inaccessible if the membership ends or the game leaves the service; they can be used again if you resubscribe or buy the game.

Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo’s membership is not best judged as a substitute for buying every new game. Its value depends on whether you use its compatible online play, classics library, cloud saves, or included selected DLC and upgrade packs. Nintendo notes that selected DLC requires the full version of the relevant game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision rule
Choose a subscription if the games you want are actually included, you can play enough of them during the paid period, and the plan’s other benefits are worth their real cost to you. Buy individually if you want a small number of games, expect long-term access or repeated play, or prefer a physical copy. If the result is close, compare the same games and editions at current sale prices, then consider whether temporary access or continued access better fits your plans.
