How these games compare with Garry’s Mod
Garry’s Mod is a physics sandbox built around free-form play, building and online cooperation. Facepunch describes it as “A physics based sandbox game built on a modified version of Valve’s Source Engine” and notes an April 2026 update on its official Garry’s Mod page. The three alternatives below overlap with parts of that experience, but they serve different purposes.

For players who value making their own experiences or sampling other creators’ modes, s&box is the strongest match in this group. Facepunch calls it “a game creation platform built on the Source 2 engine” and highlights its editor and built-in multiplayer. Its Steam description says the community has created games across genres, including roleplay. See the official s&box page and s&box on Steam.
That makes it the natural choice for someone seeking a modern platform for creating and playing community-made modes. But the evidence supports a platform with varied games, not an exact recreation of GMod’s familiar modes. Steam also flags user-generated content, which may include violence and bad language.

Best for vehicle physics: BeamNG.drive
Choose BeamNG.drive if the part of Garry’s Mod you want to reproduce is experimenting with physics, especially involving cars. Its Steam listing describes a soft-body vehicle simulator and points to free roam, customizable vehicles, a world editor, and community-created vehicles, terrains and scenarios. Its emphasis is vehicle simulation, not a general sandbox for roleplay or a broad catalog of player-made game modes. Treat it as a focused physics alternative, rather than a direct GMod substitute.

Best for solo 2D physics experiments: People Playground
People Playground is a narrower option for players who want to experiment with ragdolls and physics on their own. Its Steam description presents a 2D sandbox and notes Workshop mods. - Building and playing community-created modes: Start with s&box, especially if roleplay is part of what you are looking for.
- Driving and vehicle-based physics: Pick BeamNG.drive for its vehicle-centered free roam, editing and modding.
- Solo ragdoll experimentation: Pick People Playground if a 2D physics sandbox and its cartoon-gore tone suit you.
