First work out whether the problem is with downloading or installing the game, or with your right to access it. A stalled download usually calls for a clean retry and connection checks; a padlock or subscription-verification error calls for account, subscription, catalog, and license checks. Check PlayStation Network service status before repeating steps, and note the exact error code.
Identify what failed
Record the exact error code and when it appears: during download, installation, or launch. Sony’s error-code index separates download, license-confirmation, and subscription-verification problems; those symptoms do not all have the same fix.

If a PlayStation Plus game is locked or won’t start
Verify the account and entitlement
- Sign in to the account that bought or claimed the game. If needed, check that account’s transaction history.
- Confirm that the PlayStation Plus subscription is active.
- Check that the title is still available to you through PlayStation Plus. Access depends on the title and the applicable subscription access; a previous claim does not make every title permanently available through the service.
- If another account owns the game, verify the sharing arrangement: on PS5, the owner’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting; on PS4, the owner’s primary-console activation.
If the console cannot confirm a PlayStation Plus subscription, make sure it is online and signed in to PSN, then check the subscription page. Sony says that if sign-in works and the subscription is still active, the problem may be temporary; try again later.

Restore licenses
A padlock can indicate a license issue. Sony says restoring licenses does not affect your data, making it a safe diagnostic step after you have checked the account and entitlement.
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
On PS5, you can also highlight the game on the home screen or in the game library, press the Options button, and choose the license-restoration option.

If the license server or PlayStation Network may be unavailable
Check PlayStation Network service status before repeatedly retrying. Sony says PS5 error CE-109258-5 can occur when a server connection fails before license information is confirmed. For that error, Sony recommends checking service status, restarting the console, power-cycling the router and modem, restoring licenses, and trying again later if necessary.

- Restart the console.
- Turn off the router and modem, wait at least five minutes, then restart them.
- Restore licenses using the menu path for your console.
- Try again later if the service or license check still fails.
If a download or installation fails
Use Sony’s instructions for the exact error code where available. Its download and install guidance includes updating console system software, restoring licenses, deleting the failed download or content and downloading it again, and rebuilding the database in Safe Mode for some errors.

- Record the error code and check Sony’s instructions for that code.
- Install any available console system software update.
- If the code-specific instructions call for it, delete the failed download or content and start the download again.
- Restore licenses if the instructions or symptoms indicate a license problem.
- For errors where Sony recommends it, use Safe Mode to rebuild the database. Do not treat this as a universal first step; follow the instructions for your particular error.
- If possible, retry the download over a wired connection. This can help diagnose a connection problem, but it cannot create a missing license or reactivate an expired subscription.

If the relevant steps do not resolve the problem, contact PlayStation Support with details that help distinguish an account issue from a download or service failure:
