Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA free POS system is right for your business if your checkout is simple and the free tier already covers the features you use every day. That usually means a new or small business with one location, a modest catalog and a few staff. “Free” almost always means no monthly software subscription. You still pay card processing fees, and you may pay for hardware, add-ons or a reporting upgrade. The figures below come from Square, Loyverse and Shopify’s own US pricing pages as they appeared in October 2026. They change, and they differ by country and account.
What “free” does and does not cover
A free POS plan removes the recurring software fee. It does not remove the cost of taking payments. Square says its free plan has no monthly subscription but charges processing fees whenever you accept a payment. Loyverse lists a free core product with optional paid add-ons and separate payment rates. Three costs sit outside the headline price:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Processing fees. These are usually the largest ongoing cost, and they scale with sales.
- Paid upgrades. Features such as staff controls, deeper inventory and long sales history are often gated.
- Hardware. Some setups need none. Others need a reader, printer, scanner or cash drawer.
What three well-known providers charge (US pricing)
Square Free
Square’s US fee schedule lists these rates for the free plan:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Payment type | Rate |
|---|---|
| Tap, dip or swipe | 2.6% + 15¢ |
| Online or invoice | 3.3% + 30¢ |
| Online API | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| Manual entry or card on file | 3.5% + 15¢ |
| Cash or check | No processing fee |
Square says fees are deducted from the transaction total, which includes tax and tip. Rates depend on your account, plan, payment method and country, so confirm yours before committing.
#1 Best Overall
- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
Square also lists several ways to take payments without buying a reader: invoices, payment links, a virtual terminal, and Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android. Its fee page mentions a free magstripe reader. Square’s plan documentation says other hardware is sold separately. A counter that takes cards in person may still be better served by a dedicated reader, so check which reader supports the payment methods you want.
Loyverse
Loyverse’s US pricing page lists these as free:
- POS
- Essential inventory
- Loyalty
- Customer display
- Kitchen display
- Multi-store management
- Integrations
- Sales reports covering the last 31 days
These are paid add-ons, priced per store:
| Add-on | Price |
|---|---|
| Unlimited sales history | $5/month |
| Employee management | $25/month |
| Advanced inventory | $25/month |
Loyverse Payments, its own payment option, is listed at 1.99% + 15¢ for in-person debit and 2.49% + 15¢ for in-person credit. Cards issued outside the United States carry an extra 1.5%. Those are rates on its current US page, not market averages. Loyverse says you can start on a phone or tablet you already own, use Tap to Pay on compatible phones, or buy an optional mobile reader ($59) or smart reader ($269).

Shopify POS
Shopify is not a $0 option in the pricing cited here. Its page says total cost combines the Shopify plan, transaction fees and any POS Pro locations.
- Basic plan: $39 USD/month. In-person features are limited to basic staff access, simple customer profiles, and returns at the original purchase location.
- POS Pro: an extra $89 USD/month per location, billed yearly. It adds broader staff permissions, inventory management, retail reports and omnichannel tools.
- Card rates on Basic: starting at 2.9% + 30¢ online and 2.6% + 10¢ in person. These are advertised starting rates and can vary by payment provider and country.
Shopify recommends POS Pro for locations with heavy foot traffic, several staff tiers or large catalogs. A setup starts with a smartphone or tablet plus a Shopify card reader. Stands, receipt printers, cash drawers and barcode scanners are optional, and you should check compatibility before buying.
Rank #3
How to test whether free is actually cheaper
Compare on seven points, not on headline price:
- Monthly subscription, plus any upgrade you would need
- Rates by payment type: card-present, online, invoice and manual entry
- Number of staff users and the permissions you can set
- Inventory depth and how far back reports go
- Hardware and phone compatibility
- Country and location availability
- Integrations and how the system behaves offline
Then run your own numbers. Take your real monthly sales, average ticket and payment mix. Add hardware you must buy and any upgrade you can’t do without.
Illustrative example
This is a hypothetical shop, not a measured result. It sells $20,000 a month in person at a $25 average ticket, which is 800 card transactions, all card-present. It uses the listed US rates and ignores tax, tip, hardware and any volume discounts.
Rank #4
- With Square Handheld, you can accept payments, take tableside orders, or scan barcodes anywhere. With a slim design and comfortable grip, the POS is easy to carry in your palm or pocket. Square Handheld is designed to withstand water splashes and dust. Add an optional protective case for accidental drops. A long-lasting battery and offline payments let you keep selling.
- Slim, pocketable, and lightweight so you can accept payments wherever your customers are.
- Take tableside orders, bust lines, or use the built-in barcode scanner, all with one sleek device.
- A battery that can power through your shift and offline payments let you keep selling, even if your internet is down.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one simple rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts required.
| Option | Processing | Software | Approx. monthly total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square Free (2.6% + 15¢) | $520 + $120 = $640 | $0 | $640 |
| Shopify Basic (2.6% + 10¢) | $520 + $80 = $600 | $39 | $639 |
| Loyverse Payments (assuming half debit, half credit) | About 2.24% + 15¢ = $448 + $120 = $568 | $0 for the free tier | $568, plus any add-ons |
The gaps here are small, and they flip with ticket size, payment mix and the add-ons you need. Shopify POS Pro would add $89 a month per location. Loyverse’s employee management and advanced inventory would add $50 a month together per store. A “free” tier that needs those add-ons can cost more than a paid plan that includes them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen a free POS is a good fit
- You are starting out or testing a concept.
- You run one location with simple checkout.
- You can use a phone or tablet you already own.
- The free features cover what you do daily, and your expected fees are no higher than the alternatives.
When to price paid plans or other systems
Upgrade costs and competing systems deserve a close look if any of these apply:
Best Value
- MODERN CHECKOUT PLAY: This realistic payment terminal adds contemporary shopping fun to pretend stores, giving children an engaging way to act as cashiers while exploring familiar checkout routines.
- CONTACTLESS PAYMENT: Kids can enter an amount, confirm the transaction, hold the card near the terminal, enter a PIN, and complete the pretend purchase for an interactive shopping experience.
- CARD READER: Inserting the included credit card into the terminal activates realistic checkout sounds, adding another layer of sensory play that makes children's make-believe store feel more authentic.
- CHECKOUT ACCESSORIES: The set includes a credit card with contactless functionality and three receipt cards, providing extra props for realistic transactions and helping kids expand their pretend-store adventures.
- ROLE-PLAY SKILLS: Switching between cashier and customer encourages children to practice communication, turn-taking, sequencing, counting, and fine motor control while creating their own stories.
- You need staff roles and permissions, such as limiting refunds or discounts.
- You manage a large or complex inventory.
- You need more than 31 days of sales history, for example for year-over-year comparison or bookkeeping.
- You run several locations with different workflows.
- You depend on an integration the free tier doesn’t include.
Limits of this comparison
None of the three providers’ pages establishes a universal winner. The right choice depends on your business type, country, payment mix, volume and required features. All figures are US-specific, taken from the providers’ pages in October 2026, and are not guaranteed future terms. Confirm rates and availability for your own account before you switch. Moving a catalog and customer data later is a real cost too, so favor a system that lets you export your data.
