To get local broadcast channels on a Vizio smart TV, connect an antenna to the TV’s antenna/coax input, set the tuner source to Antenna if your model has that setting, and run a channel scan. Internet access alone won’t find over-the-air (OTA) stations. Vizio’s WatchFree+ service can also stream some local news channels, but those are a separate thing from your area’s broadcast stations.
Two things “local channels” can mean

The two can sit side by side. Newer Vizio software puts antenna channels in the same WatchFree+ guide as the streaming channels, but the sources stay different. A local news stream is not the same as a full broadcast station schedule, and it isn’t offered for every market or affiliate.

Set up antenna channels
- Connect the antenna. Plug it into the TV’s antenna input, not another port. If you’ve moved the TV, rescan, because the set must rediscover the channels available in the new location.
- Select the Antenna source. On models with a tuner-source control, open the Channels menu, choose Channel Source, select Antenna, and exit. This sequence comes from Vizio’s D24he1 manual, an older model. Newer sets may label things differently.
- Scan. Choose Find Channels and let the automatic scan finish, then select Done and exit. Vizio’s manual states: “A channel scan is required for free over-the-air channels (using an antenna) and cable channels from an out-of-the-wall connection (without a cable box).”
- On newer Vizio navigation, open WatchFree+, press OK to open the guide, then hold OK for three seconds to see categories such as Antenna Channels. Existing antenna channels appear there alongside WatchFree+ live channels.
- Optional: to favorite a channel in the guide, move left until a channel is highlighted and press OK (per Vizio’s antenna help page).
The wording above blends a legacy model manual with current Vizio interface guidance, so your TV may differ. If a control is missing, check the manual for your exact model number or contact Vizio Support.

If channels are missing or weak
A scan only finds signals that reach the antenna. Work through these in order:

- Check that the coax connection is snug and in the antenna input.
- Confirm the source is Antenna (not Cable) where your TV offers the setting.
- Reposition the antenna. Vizio suggests a spot near a window without a metal screen, higher on a wall, or, for a directional antenna, aimed at the broadcast tower. Test more than one location.
- Rescan after every placement change, since the TV only stores what the last scan found.
- If key stations stay weak, consider a directional or outdoor antenna. Vizio describes outdoor antennas as better for longer range and rural locations, but it doesn’t promise results for any particular home.
Vizio points to the FCC’s DTV reception map for checking nearby stations and tower direction. Treat it as planning guidance, not a guarantee of indoor reception. If you need to buy an antenna, an indoor HDTV antenna is the usual starting point; check your local signals first and don’t rely on advertised range claims.

Open WatchFree+, open the guide, and browse the Local Channels category. Vizio’s announcement lists example local news outlets, and its live-channel catalog includes a range of them. The catalog changes, so confirm that the exact channel you want is present.

Don’t rely on channel totals when judging this. Vizio’s antenna-channel help page says “260+” live channels, while its WatchFree+ Live page says “300+” (both checked in 2026). These are service-wide promotional counts, not the number of local stations you can receive.
