Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

For a light workload, look for 8GB of RAM rather than treating a device’s minimum system requirements as a comfort target. If you often keep many tabs and apps open during calls, 16GB is a better goal. Before choosing, make sure the laptop supports the apps your school or employer requires; that can matter more than a small difference in processor specifications.
What a budget laptop can handle
Routine office documents, web research, email, learning platforms, and standard video meetings are within reach for many entry-level laptops. The experience depends on the exact configuration and how many programs you use at once: a browser, a video call, and several other apps can put more pressure on memory than any one task by itself.

How much memory do you need?
| Use case or reference | Published memory figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 eligibility | 4GB minimum (Microsoft, requirements page accessed 2026) | This is an operating-system minimum, not a target for comfortable multitasking. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements also include processor, firmware, TPM, graphics, display, and setup-account requirements. |
| Longer-term general use | 8GB recommended (Microsoft, memory guidance accessed 2026) | A reasonable starting point for light work and school tasks. Microsoft says 16GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance projects. Microsoft’s memory guidance. |
| Zoom desktop app | 4GB minimum; 16GB recommended (Zoom, requirements page accessed 2026) | The gap between minimum and recommended illustrates why a machine may technically run an app without being ideal for a call alongside other work. Zoom also lists a dual-core 2GHz minimum and quad-core 2.5GHz recommendation. Zoom desktop requirements. |
| Zoom web app | Windows/macOS: 8GB recommended; ChromeOS: 4GB recommended (Zoom, page accessed 2026) | Zoom reports 1GB–1.5GB of active memory use during a meeting. The browser version’s guidance differs by operating system. Zoom web requirements. |
| Chromebook education categories | 4GB minimum for basic and learning-anywhere use; 8GB for advanced heavy use (Google for Education, guide accessed 2026) | The 8GB category covers heavy multitasking, large calls, multiple tabs, and external displays. These are education guide categories, not a universal performance test of every Chromebook. Google’s Chromebook selection guide. |
For a budget purchase, 8GB is a sensible light-work baseline; choose 16GB if you regularly multitask during calls and can afford it. Check the exact configuration, because some laptops have memory that cannot be upgraded later.

When a Chromebook may fit
A Chromebook can suit browser-based classes, documents, email, and web video calls. Google’s education guide distinguishes basic use from heavier workloads, but your school or employer’s software requirements should decide whether ChromeOS is viable.
When to check for Windows compatibility
Confirm whether you need a specific Windows desktop program, exam or testing software, workplace application, or peripheral before buying. A web substitute may not be accepted or offer the same functions. For Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use, Microsoft says internet access and a Microsoft account are needed during initial setup; see the Windows 11 requirements.

Pick storage for how you keep files
Microsoft’s laptop buying guide suggests 128–256GB for people who rely on cloud storage, and 512GB–1TB for those who save many files locally. These are broad buying-guide ranges, not a measure of how much space a particular student or worker needs. Consider downloaded course materials, photos, videos, and large project files as well as cloud access. Microsoft’s laptop buying guide also describes 8–16GB+ as general and student guidance.

Video-call quality depends on more than speed
Zoom says most laptops have integrated webcams, speakers, and microphones, but system requirements do not establish the quality of a particular laptop’s camera or audio. Check camera image, microphone pickup, speaker clarity, privacy controls, and whether the device supports a headset connection. A USB or Bluetooth headset is an optional workaround if built-in audio is unsatisfactory, not a required accessory. Zoom’s laptop guide.

Your internet connection matters too: a capable computer cannot compensate for weak or unstable Wi-Fi. Zoom’s web-app guidance lists 1.2Mbps upload/download for 720p one-to-one video and 3.8Mbps upload plus 3.0Mbps download for 1080p one-to-one video. These figures are Zoom’s stated bandwidth guidance for those call types, not a guarantee of call quality. See Zoom’s web requirements.
