If you want emergent medieval role-playing now, the best alternative depends on which part of Chronicles: Medieval appeals to you: fighting beside your troops, shaping a political story, or letting a sandbox campaign unfold through your choices. Chronicles: Medieval is not yet playable; its Steam listing says it is planned for 2027, and the developers have targeted Early Access for early 2027. These alternatives are useful for exploring related ideas in the meantime, not evidence that the unreleased game will match them feature for feature.
What makes a game feel like Chronicles: Medieval?
The announced premise combines real-time army orders with direct combat: you command units such as longbowmen, men-at-arms, crossbowmen, and cavalry, while also taking part in the fighting. Its Steam description places the action in medieval Europe during the Hundred Years’ War and pitches character choices, army building, reputation, and a changing world as parts of the experience. The Steam listing describes planned features, not a finished game.

Politics and social structure are another part of the pitch. In its developer diary on lords, power, and war, Raw Power Games describes a hierarchy involving feudal nobles and clergy, merchants, artisans, and mercenary bands. The studio says Early Access will focus on feudal nobility and that the systems remain in active development, so their scope and values may change.
Use these five questions to find a suitable game:
- How do you fight? Do you want to control a character in the battle, command from above, or combine both?
- Where does the story come from? Is it primarily personal adventure, political maneuvering, or the consequences of a changing campaign?
- Can you pursue non-combat goals? Trade, status, relationships, and other paths can make a sandbox feel more role-play driven.
- What is the scale of command? A handful of companions, a field army, and a realm-spanning war create very different kinds of decisions.
- Is the experience available now? A planned feature or target date is not the same as a playable release.
Choose by the experience you want
| If you want… | Look for a game centered on… | Trade-off to expect |
|---|---|---|
| To fight alongside an army | Direct character combat integrated with troop command | Political and social systems may be less central than the battles. |
| Political stories at kingdom scale | Realm management, diplomacy, succession, and war | You may make strategic decisions without controlling a character in the melee. |
| Economic or social role-play | Trade, reputation, relationships, or a civilian career | Large battles may be secondary or absent. |
| A campaign shaped by improvisation | An open-ended sandbox in which setbacks and alliances create stories | The experience may be less directed and more dependent on player-made goals. |
This is a decision guide, not a ranking: the available information about Chronicles: Medieval does not establish an objective closest match across other games.

Why Chronicles: Medieval is still a moving target
The Gamescom 2026 announcement on Steam Community specifies an early 2027 Early Access target. The Steam store page currently says the game is not yet available and lists a planned 2027 release. Those are target timings, not a confirmed launch date.
A TechRadar hands-on preview reports an explorable regional map, troop progression, political and economic options, direct combat, and auto-resolved battles. It also reports a maximum battlefield scale of up to 2,000 troops, based on the preview and discussion with the developers. Treat that as a preview-reported figure, not a verified specification for the final game.
