Choose 30 fps if you are deciding between 25 and 30 fps for a YouTube 24/7 live stream. YouTube’s documented Live Streaming API frame-rate options include 30 fps, 60 fps, and variable, but not 25 fps. That makes 30 fps the more clearly documented choice—not a special YouTube rule for round-the-clock streams.
Why 30 fps is the safer documented choice
YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists 30fps, 60fps, and variable as inbound frame-rate values. It does not list 25 fps. YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance also gives explicit bitrate recommendations for 30 fps configurations. Together, those are the basis for preferring 30 fps when those are the two choices.

This is a platform-documentation distinction, not a controlled comparison proving that 30 fps looks better or runs more reliably than 25 fps. YouTube says its encoder supports frame rates up to 60 fps, but that statement alone does not confirm every rate below 60. Its public guidance cited here does not set a separate frame-rate standard for 24/7 broadcasts.

Example: H.264 at 1080p30
YouTube recommends a bitrate of 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. This figure applies to that specific combination; YouTube’s settings table gives different recommendations for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs. Check the current table before configuring a different combination: YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Keyframes and bitrate mode
- Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
The API’s frame-rate field documents 30fps, 60fps, and variable. If you select variable frame rate, the API requires the resolution to be variable as well. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

Test the stream you intend to run
A 24/7 stream is a long-duration reliability challenge, not a different frame-rate category. Before relying on a configuration, test the full setup using audio and movement similar to the real stream. YouTube’s Help guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Monitor stream health during the broadcast, and choose a quality your connection can sustain; YouTube recommends checking upload speed and connection reliability.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Set the encoder to 30 fps and select the actual resolution and codec.
- Apply the bitrate recommendation for that exact combination, plus CBR and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Run a representative test with the planned audio and motion.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and broadcast; adjust the configuration if the connection cannot sustain it.
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide says frame rates up to 60 fps are supported in that ingestion context. It also notes that shorter media segments can reduce latency but may increase rebuffers and reduce encoding efficiency. That guidance is about HLS ingestion and latency trade-offs, not a recommendation to use 25 fps for a 24/7 stream: Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS.

What 25 fps does—and does not—mean here
Apple’s HLS authoring specification lists both 25 and 30 fps among supported rates for VOD and recommends using content’s natural frame rate. That is useful context when preparing on-demand HLS media, but it does not establish YouTube Live ingestion behavior or override YouTube’s documented API values. See Apple’s HLS authoring specification.
The official guidance cited here does not quantify a bandwidth saving for 25 fps versus 30 fps, compare their quality under controlled conditions, or promise uptime based on frame rate. Do not choose 25 fps on the assumption that it guarantees a particular bandwidth reduction or smoother continuous operation.
