IRL Streaming: How to Stream Live on YouTube

A practical guide to IRL streaming on YouTube, from mobile eligibility and app steps to encoder setup, framing, equipment, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream live on YouTube, verify your channel, make sure it has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days, and choose a route: the YouTube app for mobile IRL streaming, a webcam for a simple computer stream, an encoder for gameplay or a more produced feed, or a supported console. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. Mobile streaming has extra eligibility requirements, including 50 subscribers, and first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.

Check eligibility before planning an IRL stream

YouTube’s general live-streaming requirements are a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16 years old. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours; once enabled, live streaming can be used immediately. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Mobile streaming has additional requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no restrictions in the previous 90 days, live streaming enabled, and an Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+ device. YouTube says the first mobile stream may take up to 24 hours to become available after enabling it. Check eligibility early rather than waiting until you are on location. Details are in YouTube’s mobile streaming instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Age and privacy settings are separate considerations. YouTube’s general rule sets 16 as the minimum age to live stream, while its mobile help page says users aged 13–17 have an unlisted default privacy setting and users 18 or older have a public default. Defaults can be changed; confirm the stream’s visibility before starting.

Choose the streaming route that fits the stream

Route Best suited to What it needs
Mobile app IRL vlogs, quick updates, or streaming away from a workstation An eligible channel and supported phone or tablet; mobile has the 50-subscriber threshold
Webcam A straightforward computer-camera stream A computer with a webcam
Encoder Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio and video equipment Streaming software or a hardware encoder; cameras and microphones are optional
Console Gameplay from a supported modern console Follow the console maker’s device-specific instructions

YouTube describes mobile as useful for vlogging and quick updates, webcam as a simple computer option, and encoders as a route for gameplay, overlays, and external equipment. For an on-the-go camera stream, start with mobile if your channel qualifies. If the stream needs screen capture, overlays, or several audio/video sources, an encoder offers the relevant production controls. See YouTube’s overview of streaming methods and its encoder guidance.

Go live from the YouTube app on a phone

  1. Open the YouTube app while signed in to the eligible channel.
  2. Tap Create, then Live.
  3. Add the title and stream details, choose visibility, and set the audience information.
  4. Review the framing and what appears in the shot, then tap Go live.
  5. When finished, tap Finish. YouTube creates an archive; you can change its privacy or delete it afterward.

You can schedule a mobile stream in advance through the app’s calendar. For a first stream, account for the possible activation delay rather than assuming it will be available on arrival. Follow the current steps in YouTube’s mobile help page.

Stream from a computer or encoder

Simple webcam stream

For a basic computer-camera broadcast, YouTube’s webcam route uses a computer with a webcam. It avoids the encoder setup and is suited to a direct camera stream; choose another route if you need gameplay capture, overlays, or external video sources.

Encoder setup

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the matching fields in your streaming software or hardware encoder.
  3. Start sending the feed from the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room.
  4. Check the preview, then click Go live in Live Control Room.
  5. To finish, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder.

A stream key functions like a password for your broadcast. Do not publish it, send it to people who do not need it, or expose it in a screen capture. If it is compromised, reset it through Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe the setup and key management. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Prepare a scheduled event

For scheduled encoder events, YouTube recommends configuring the event at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Use that time to inspect the preview, confirm the event is accessible from channel/watch pages and mobile devices, and monitor audio and video during the broadcast. These are preparation recommendations, not guarantees against connection or equipment failures. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Plan horizontal and vertical framing before going live

Live Control Room streams support dual horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) output by default where dual streaming is available. The vertical version is a center crop of the horizontal stream, though other layout choices are available. You can disable dual streaming in settings, but YouTube says you cannot add vertical output after a stream has started.

Reframe the camera or choose an appropriate layout in advance. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance for availability and controls.

What equipment do you actually need?

For mobile IRL streaming, the supported phone or tablet is the essential device; for a webcam stream, you need a computer with a webcam; for an encoder workflow, you need streaming software or a hardware encoder. Additional equipment depends on the production, not on a universal minimum. YouTube Help says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.”

  • Microphone: Consider an external mic if the built-in microphone does not suit the sound you need.
  • Headphones: Useful for monitoring audio while using a computer or encoder setup.
  • Webcam: Needed for the webcam route, but not a requirement for app-based mobile streaming.
  • Hardware encoder: An option for a production that needs its capabilities; it is not required for every live stream.

YouTube’s equipment examples and advice are in its live-streaming tips and encoder help. No particular brand or model is required by those instructions.

Preflight checklist for an IRL broadcast

  • Confirm the channel is verified, eligible, and has live streaming enabled; if this is the first stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  • For mobile, confirm the channel meets the 50-subscriber threshold and the device meets the listed operating-system requirements.
  • Set the stream title, visibility, and audience information; check whether the intended privacy setting is actually selected.
  • Decide whether you need horizontal, vertical, or dual output, and keep key action inside the vertical crop if using dual output.
  • For an encoder, verify the stream URL and key in the correct fields, protect the key, and wait for the Live Control Room preview before going live.
  • Check sound and picture in the preview and verify the scheduled event is accessible where viewers will watch it.

Common problems and what to check

The mobile app does not offer Live

Check the channel’s mobile eligibility, including 50 subscribers, verification, and whether live streaming is enabled. A first mobile stream may not become available until up to 24 hours after activation. Also confirm the device meets the Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+ requirement.

The encoder feed does not appear in Live Control Room

Confirm the encoder has the correct stream URL and stream key, that it is actively sending the feed, and that you are viewing the matching stream in Live Control Room. Wait for the preview before selecting Go live. If the key may have been exposed, reset it rather than continuing to use a compromised key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The vertical version cuts off important action

The vertical output is a center crop unless another layout is selected. Reposition the camera or action before starting, and review the available layout settings; vertical output cannot be added once the stream is underway.

StreamNeo is for a different job from an IRL camera broadcast: it keeps a YouTube channel live around the clock by looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
