How to Live Stream on YouTube: A Step-by-Step Guide

Check eligibility, choose a YouTube streaming method, configure and test it, then go live and finish the broadcast from the right controls.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To live stream on YouTube, first make sure your channel is eligible, then choose mobile, webcam, an encoder, or a console based on what you want to show. Set up the stream in YouTube Studio, test the picture and sound, start the broadcast, and end it from the Live Control Room when you are finished. If this is your first time going live, enable streaming in advance: YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours.

Check whether your channel can go live

YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and turn on live streaming before the day of your event. See YouTube’s live-streaming help (accessed October 3, 2026; publication date not displayed).

Mobile has additional requirements

For streaming from the YouTube mobile app, YouTube lists a minimum of 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the last 90 days, and Android 8.0 or later or iOS 8 or later. These are mobile-specific requirements, not the general requirements for every streaming method. YouTube says channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have mobile viewer limits, and their live archives may be private by default. Check the mobile requirements at YouTube’s mobile live-streaming help (accessed October 3, 2026; publication date not displayed).

Choose the right way to stream

Method Best fit What to expect
Mobile Quick updates or streams from a location Create or schedule a stream in the YouTube app. Mobile eligibility requirements apply.
Webcam A straightforward stream from a computer Use YouTube’s webcam flow when a webcam and simple direct setup are enough.
Encoder Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, multiple inputs, or external camera and audio equipment Streaming software or hardware sends the feed to YouTube. You configure it with YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
Console Gameplay from a supported modern console YouTube supports direct console streaming; consult the console maker’s instructions for its specific setup.

YouTube describes these as different production routes, not as a performance ranking. For a simple in-person stream, mobile or webcam may mean less setup. An encoder gives you more production control; a console can be convenient when you are streaming console gameplay. YouTube’s overview of supported methods is at its live-streaming help page.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Create or schedule the stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio. Go to the Live Control Room to create a stream, or open the Manage tab to schedule one. The exact labels may change as YouTube updates Studio.
  2. Set the event details. Add a title and description, choose the audience setting, and check privacy before proceeding. Do not assume the stream will be public: YouTube may use different default privacy settings depending on age.
  3. Schedule ahead if you want to promote it. A scheduled stream creates a page you can share, and viewers can set reminders. Confirm the time and privacy on the event page before sharing it.
  4. For an encoder, copy the connection details. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it.

YouTube’s setup instructions for creating, scheduling, and connecting an encoder are in Live stream on YouTube (accessed October 3, 2026; publication date not displayed).

Test your audio, video, and connection

Before a public event, YouTube recommends an unlisted test stream so you can check how the picture and sound reach viewers. If you use an encoder, start sending the feed and wait for the preview in the Live Control Room. Check the framing, lighting, sound level, and any screen or overlay content before selecting Go live.

  • Check the network. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streaming. Make sure your available upload capacity can support the stream bitrate you set in the encoder.
  • Listen to the stream, not just your room. Verify microphone levels and check for echo, clipping, or unwanted background noise in the test.
  • Stabilize the camera if needed. A tripod or similar accessory can reduce camera shake; a microphone can improve audio. These are optional suggestions, not prerequisites. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started.
  • Plan what happens on camera. Prepare the segments and materials you need. Unlike a recorded video, a live broadcast does not offer multiple takes.
  • Budget mobile data. YouTube gives about 10 MB per minute as a mobile-data rule of thumb. Actual use depends on the stream and connection.

Check rights and YouTube policies before going live

Only broadcast material you have the rights to use, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube lists receiving a copyright strike during an active live stream and matching another copyrighted live broadcast among situations that can lead to live-streaming restrictions. If your channel is restricted, do not try to get around the restriction by streaming from another channel. Review YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions guidance (accessed October 3, 2026; publication date not displayed).

Troubleshoot common live-stream problems

Problem Likely cause What to do
You cannot start a stream Live streaming is not enabled yet, the channel is not verified, an eligibility requirement is unmet, or there is a restriction. Check the channel’s live eligibility in YouTube Studio and allow up to 24 hours after first-time activation.
The mobile app does not offer live streaming The mobile subscriber threshold, device requirement, verification, or restriction check may not be met. Check YouTube’s mobile-specific requirements. If you need to go live now and mobile eligibility is the blocker, consider another supported method your channel can use.
The encoder feed does not appear in the preview The encoder may be using the wrong server URL or stream key, or may not be sending a feed. Compare the encoder’s URL and key with the values in the Live Control Room, then restart sending the feed and wait for the preview. Keep the key private.
The stream looks or sounds wrong in the test Framing, microphone levels, room noise, or the connection may need adjustment. Correct the issue and run another unlisted test before switching to a public event.
The stream cannot be made public The event’s privacy setting may be private or unlisted, or an eligibility or policy limitation may apply. Check the event privacy in Studio and review any channel notices; do not assume a default setting is public.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than broadcast a live camera or gameplay feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
