The main change is not simply that a newer iPhone is automatically “better for VR.” The iPhone XR has a 6.1-inch LCD, an A12 Bionic chip, and motion sensors, but Apple’s ARKit documentation describes augmented-reality features—not a dedicated VR headset or blanket compatibility with phone-mounted VR viewers. The right comparison depends on whether you mean a phone inside a stereoscopic viewer, 360-degree video, or camera-based AR.
First, define what you mean by VR
“VR” can describe different experiences, and they do not place the same demands on an iPhone:

- A phone-mounted stereoscopic viewer: the phone sits in a headset, with lenses separating the screen into views for each eye. Compatibility depends on the particular viewer, its fit and phone-mount dimensions, and the apps or content it supports.
- 360-degree video: you look around within a video, whether on the phone screen or through a viewer. Video playback support alone does not prove compatibility with a particular headset or that a given app is available.
- Camera-based AR or spatial apps: the phone camera shows the real environment with digital content placed into it. Apple calls this augmented reality, not a dedicated VR-headset experience.
These categories should not be treated as interchangeable. A phone’s AR features do not establish that it works in every phone-mounted VR viewer.

What the iPhone XR’s specifications establish
Apple lists the iPhone XR with a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina LCD, a resolution of 1792 by 828 pixels at 326 pixels per inch, and an A12 Bionic chip. It also lists a three-axis gyroscope and an accelerometer, a Lightning connector, and a TrueDepth camera system. For video playback, Apple lists HEVC, H.264, MPEG-4 Part 2, and Motion JPEG support. These are manufacturer specifications, not VR performance measurements or confirmation of headset compatibility. Apple’s iPhone XR technical specifications give the full hardware details; Apple introduced the XR in 2018. Apple’s launch announcement describes its A12 Bionic chip, TrueDepth camera system, and 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display.

The screen’s size and pixel density are useful facts when considering a phone-viewer setup, but they do not by themselves determine how an experience will look or whether the XR fits a viewer. That depends on the headset and the content as well as the phone.
ARKit support is not a VR compatibility list
Apple describes ARKit as a framework for augmented-reality apps. Its capabilities include motion tracking, world tracking, scene understanding, and display features that help apps place digital content in a camera view of the real world. That explains why an iPhone can support certain AR experiences; it does not certify the phone for a dedicated VR headset.

Apple’s general ARKit baseline is an iOS device with an A9-or-later processor running iOS 11.0 or later. Apple also cautions that some features need later software versions or particular hardware. For example, face-tracking AR requires a front-facing TrueDepth camera. The XR’s specification lists a TrueDepth camera, but that fact alone does not establish compatibility with every AR app or VR setup. Check Apple’s ARKit device-support guidance for feature-specific requirements and its ARKit overview for the framework’s scope.

There is no model-by-model verdict here because “newer iPhones” does not identify specific models, and no comparative VR test or verified headset-compatibility information is available for that undefined group. It would be misleading to promise that a newer iPhone is sharper, faster, smoother, or compatible with a particular viewer solely because it was released later.

A useful comparison needs named iPhone models and the exact experience or headset. Compare these points:
- Display: screen size, resolution, and pixel density, alongside the viewer’s supported phone dimensions.
- Processor and software: chip generation, the app’s requirements, and the iOS version actually supported by each phone.
- Motion and camera features: the sensors or depth-camera capabilities the specific app requires, rather than assuming every feature is available on every model.
- Connection and fit: the headset’s specified connector or adapter needs and its supported phone size. The XR has a Lightning connector, but that does not determine compatibility with an unspecified accessory.
- Exact app and headset support: verify both against the specific phone model. A general ARKit requirement is not a substitute for a headset maker’s compatibility information.
How to decide whether to keep the XR or compare an upgrade
- Name the experience. Decide whether you want a phone-mounted stereoscopic viewer, 360-degree video, or an AR app.
- Identify the exact headset or app. Check its stated phone dimensions, connection needs, supported models, and software requirements. Do not infer support from the word “VR” or from ARKit support.
- Compare specific iPhone models. Use manufacturer specifications for display, chip, sensors, cameras, and connector, then check the app and accessory requirements against those models.
- Separate specification from proof. A higher listed resolution or newer chip is a hardware difference; it is not, by itself, a measured improvement in a VR experience.
If you do not yet have a particular headset or app in mind, the XR’s published specifications can serve as a baseline, but they cannot answer whether an unnamed newer iPhone is a worthwhile VR upgrade.
