For an easy at-home craft, start with clean cardboard, paper, small boxes, bags, string, or fabric scraps—and let your child choose whether to make something to play with, display, wear, or use in a story. These ideas are adaptable to what is already in the house; the box-city activity below is specifically labeled for ages 8 and up.
Gather materials before choosing a project
Look for clean, intact supplies rather than buying a kit: scrap paper, cardboard, small boxes, magazines, paper bags, string or wool, fabric offcuts, crayons, pencils, markers, glue, and tape. PBS KIDS for Parents’ DIY upcycling collection offers more than 50 ideas organized around common reused materials, including rolls, egg cartons, cereal boxes, cardboard boxes, milk cartons, bags, and plastic bottles.

Let the available material suggest a starting point, then let the child decide what to make. A box might become a building or vehicle; a bag might become a puppet; scraps might become a collage or paper character. The PBS page is a collection of ideas, not a single set of instructions, so check the individual linked activity for its materials and directions before following it step by step.

- Gather a few small, clean boxes and a larger piece of cardboard for the town base.
- Cut construction paper to fit the sides of the boxes. If suitable scissors are not available, an adult can handle the cutting, or you can adapt the project by tearing paper or decorating the boxes directly.
- Draw doors, windows, signs, and other details on the paper with crayons or markers.
- Attach the paper to the boxes with glue. As a household-material substitution, tape may work where it holds securely; this is an adaptation, not a Crayola instruction.
- Arrange the buildings on the cardboard base and draw streets, sidewalks, intersections, or parking lots around them.
Invite the child to decide what belongs in the town—a home, shop, school, or an entirely imagined building. Crayola’s staff tip is: “Use your imagination and have fun making your craft as creative as you are—there’s no wrong way to do it!”

It also lists a bodkin or blunt needle as a possible tool.
Adapt collage, threading, and weaving to what is on hand
Collage
Combine magazine pictures, paper scraps, and fabric offcuts on a piece of cardboard or paper. Glue or tape can hold pieces in place. The child can make a scene, pattern, character, or abstract design; there is no need to match a particular example.

Threading or simple weaving
Use paper strips or fabric scraps with string or wool for a straightforward threading project. The Queensland Government also lists greeting-card pieces, straws, pasta, and beads as possible materials. Keep small components and any piercing tool under adult judgment, and choose a simpler paper-only option if those materials or tools are not suitable.
