Rain alone does not automatically cancel an outdoor festival. Check the event’s official live updates, follow staff directions, and treat lightning or other dangerous weather as a safety issue—not a reason to wait in a tent. Whether a weather delay or cancellation affects your ticket depends on that festival’s published terms and the notice it issues.
First, find out what the festival is doing
Open the event’s official app or website and check its email or text alerts. At the venue, listen for stage, screen, and public-address announcements, and follow staff instructions. Don’t rely on a forecast or a social post from another attendee to decide whether to stay, leave, or seek shelter.

Channels and procedures vary. Welcome to Rockville, for example, says it may send weather information through stage audio and video, app push notifications, and social media; a warning may arrive before weather is visible so attendees have time to move. Use the channels and directions designated by your own festival. Welcome to Rockville’s weather procedures

Rain is not the same as a weather emergency
Some events continue through ordinary rain when conditions are safe. Severe thunderstorms, lightning, high winds, hail, flooding, or instructions from emergency authorities may instead lead to a pause, evacuation, or cancellation. The event’s staff and emergency services—not an attendee’s own interpretation of a weather threshold—should direct what happens next.

If there is lightning or an evacuation notice, seek proper shelter
Go promptly to the shelter or location named by event staff, using the route they specify. The National Weather Service warns: “No one is safe outside of a solid enclosed structure during any thunderstorm; tents are not suitable shelters.” A tent is not a safe substitute for a designated enclosed shelter. Roskilde Festival’s thunderstorm guidance says to seek shelter before a storm reaches the festival area, avoid open areas and trees, and put down umbrellas during a thunderstorm. An umbrella may be allowed for rain at some events, but it does not protect you from lightning. Follow your festival’s local instructions. Roskilde Festival thunderstorm FAQ (29 May 2026)

Do not copy another festival’s shelter plan
Shelter locations and routes can depend on the venue and how you arrived. Welcome to Rockville, for example, gives different directions for people arriving by car, rideshare, or camping. Use the map and directions for your event rather than heading to a shelter shown on another festival’s map. Welcome to Rockville’s weather procedures

- Check the event’s official weather procedure, map, exits, and designated shelter.
- Save or install the official update channel and make sure your phone can receive notifications.
- Agree on a meeting place with your group in case you are separated.
- If you may need additional time or assistance to evacuate, check the event’s accessibility or access-center information in advance.
- Check the rules for rain gear and other items before packing. Newport Folk Festival’s 2026 information recommends raingear for its rain-or-shine event and allows personal umbrellas in rain only if they are closed during performances. Other festivals may set different rules. Newport Folk Festival
A packable poncho or rain jacket can be a practical option if the venue permits it. Choose footwear for wet walking conditions if that suits your plans, but check venue restrictions and don’t let comfort gear delay you from following an evacuation instruction.

Check what a delay, change, or cancellation means for your ticket
There is no universal rain-refund rule. A temporary hold, a shortened schedule, a relocation, and a full-day cancellation may be treated differently under the event’s ticket terms. Read the current terms and the organizer’s notice for your specific event.
The difference is visible in festival policies. Country Thunder’s published terms say performances may proceed in varying weather when safe and distinguish a full canceled festival day from delays and temporary evacuations. Newport Folk Festival’s 2026 information says events are rain or shine, programming may be interrupted for severe weather, and posted sales are final. Spoleto Festival USA describes a separate process for its outdoor performances, with direct updates and ticket instructions for an indoor move, lightning postponement, or cancellation or rescheduling. These are examples of operator-specific terms, not rules for other events.

| What happens | What to check |
|---|---|
| Temporary weather hold or evacuation | Whether the schedule resumes and whether the ticket remains valid under the event’s terms. |
| Relocation or indoor move | Where the event will take place, how entry works, and any instructions sent to ticket holders. |
| Shortened or changed program | Whether the organizer’s terms address altered programming or partial performance. |
| Full cancellation or rescheduling | The remedy, claim process, and any deadline stated by the organizer or authorized ticket seller. |
For example, Country Thunder’s policy excludes refunds for weather that does not cancel an entire festival day, including delays and temporary evacuations, and describes a remedy for an entire canceled day under its terms. Apply that policy only to the relevant event and ticket; it is not a general rule. Country Thunder ticket policy

The National Weather Service’s outdoor-event checklist asks planners to identify shelter, set thresholds for sheltering or evacuation, account for the time needed to notify and move attendees, and communicate before a possible hazard. It gives lightning within an 8-mile radius as an example threshold and suggests adding 25% to notification and movement time as a safety factor. These are planning examples for event organizers—not universal thresholds for attendees to apply on their own. Follow the instructions issued at your event.
