Choose Samsung Galaxy if you prefer Android and One UI, want dedicated 3× and 5× optical telephoto cameras, or would rather carry a lighter large-screen phone. For a concrete flagship comparison, the 2026 iPhone 18 Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra have almost identical U.S. starting prices—but they suit different priorities.
Which is better: iPhone or Samsung Galaxy?
Neither brand is the universal winner. Your existing apps, devices, and platform preference matter more than a single specification. The iPhone 18 Pro Max runs iOS 27; the Galaxy S26 Ultra runs Android 16 with One UI 8.5. Start with the system you would rather use every day, then compare the specific models that fit your budget and preferred size.

This comparison uses Apple’s 2026 iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung’s 2026 Galaxy S26 Ultra as flagship examples. Both companies also sell smaller or less expensive models, and the right comparison for many buyers is not flagship against flagship.

These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. In particular, camera resolution and zoom labels do not establish which phone takes better photos, and the battery figures use different measures. The table does not establish a real-world winner for camera quality, endurance, or performance.

Pick the iPhone if iOS and Apple’s video options fit you
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the more natural choice if you prefer iOS or already depend on Apple services and devices. Apple’s listed video formats and controls may also suit people who specifically want Dolby Vision or ProRes in their recording workflow. Check that the format, storage needs, and editing tools match how you actually capture and handle video.
Its 249 g weight is worth considering: although its listed display is the same diagonal size as Samsung’s, it weighs 35 g more than the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Apple’s U.S. starting price is $1,299 before any current trade-in or carrier offer.
Pick the Galaxy if you prefer Android, telephoto choices, or less weight
The Galaxy S26 Ultra makes more sense if you prefer Android and Samsung’s One UI, or want separate 3× and 5× optical telephoto cameras for framing subjects at different distances. It weighs 214 g, 35 g less than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, while both have a listed 6.9-inch display.

Those camera specifications describe hardware, not a guarantee of better results. If photography is your deciding factor, compare sample images and video from the specific models in the situations you care about rather than choosing by megapixels or zoom labels alone.
Battery, charging, and water resistance: what the specifications do—and do not—tell you
Battery claims are not a like-for-like comparison
Apple’s up-to-45-hour video-playback figure for iPhone 18 Pro Max is a vendor test result with a specified playback method and preproduction units. Samsung gives a 5,000 mAh typical capacity for Galaxy S26 Ultra and a supported-charging estimate, not an equivalent video-playback figure. Capacity and playback hours cannot be compared as if they were the same endurance test. Real battery life also depends on use and network conditions, so these figures do not establish which phone lasts longer in your routine.
Charging speed depends on compatible equipment
Samsung says Galaxy S26 Ultra can charge to up to 75% in around 30 minutes with supported wired charging; the required power adapter is sold separately. Check the phone’s current regional specifications and the charger’s compatibility before buying accessories.

Water-resistance ratings use different stated conditions
Apple lists iPhone 18 Pro Max as IP68 under IEC 60529, rated to a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes in controlled lab conditions. Apple notes resistance can decrease with normal wear. Samsung lists Galaxy S26 Ultra as IP68 for up to 1.5 metres of freshwater for 30 minutes and warns that resistance may diminish with wear. The makers’ conditions differ, so the numbers are not a practical head-to-head measure; neither rating is a reason to deliberately expose a phone to water. Software support: Samsung states a specific S26 commitment; Apple’s cited term is for a different model

Consider a smaller or less expensive phone before buying a flagship
If you do not need a top-tier camera system or the largest screen, compare models in the same size and price range instead. The published specifications give a useful sense of the size trade-off:
| Model | Listed display | Listed weight |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 | 6.3 inches | 177 g |
| Galaxy S26 | 6.3 inches | 167 g |
| Galaxy S26+ | 6.7 inches | 190 g |
These are model specifications, not a claim that the phones are otherwise equivalent. Apple’s cited smaller model is iPhone 17, while Samsung’s are Galaxy S26 series models. Check current local availability and compare storage, features, and price at the tier you are considering. Apple iPhone 17 specifications; Samsung announcement and specifications

How to compare the price you will actually pay
The listed U.S. starting prices—$1,299 for iPhone 18 Pro Max and $1,299.99 for Galaxy S26 Ultra—are nearly identical, but they do not tell you the total for your purchase. Prices, configurations, carrier versions, and offers vary by country and change over time.
- Match storage capacity and unlocked or carrier-specific versions before comparing prices.
- Compare the total cost, including financing terms, rather than relying only on a monthly payment.
- Check trade-in eligibility and current carrier or retailer terms; promotional values depend on the offer and your device.
- Look up prices in your country at the time you buy. The figures above are U.S. starting prices announced for these models, not a promise of today’s local price.
Before switching from iPhone to Samsung—or Samsung to iPhone
Changing platforms can affect more than the phone itself. Before committing, make a short inventory of what you rely on and verify the specific transfer or replacement options for each item:
- Messaging services and group conversations
- Photo libraries and cloud-storage accounts
- Saved passwords and authentication methods
- Paid apps, subscriptions, and in-app purchases
- Smartwatches, earbuds, tablets, computers, and other connected devices
- Family sharing, child accounts, and household device arrangements
Do not assume that every message, file, app purchase, or device feature will transfer seamlessly. The details depend on the services and devices involved, so check the items that matter to you before trading in your current phone.
