iPhone storage is the fixed capacity built into your phone; iCloud storage is cloud space linked to your Apple Account. Buying iCloud+ does not add capacity to the iPhone. Check which meter is full before spending: choose iCloud+ when you need more room for backups, iCloud Photos or iCloud Drive; manage or move local content when the phone itself is full.
What iPhone storage and iCloud storage each hold
iPhone storage: space on the device
Device storage is the capacity built into the iPhone. It holds local content such as apps, music, photos and downloads. Its capacity is set for that device, so an iCloud+ subscription cannot increase it. Apple defines device storage in its iCloud and device storage comparison.

iCloud storage: space in your Apple Account
iCloud storage is remote space for data such as device backups, iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive files. It can also keep selected information up to date across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple says a new iCloud account includes 5 GB of free storage; that is the base allocation, not a guarantee that it will cover your backups or media library. Which one should you buy?
Choose iCloud+ if your cloud capacity is the bottleneck
An iCloud+ upgrade is relevant when you need more room for iPhone backups, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive or other iCloud data. When iCloud storage is full, Apple says device backups can stop, new iCloud Photos uploads can pause, and iCloud Drive and other iCloud app data may no longer update; iCloud Mail may also be affected. Apple outlines these effects in its iCloud storage support article.
Before paying, check the storage breakdown and remove only backups, files or messages you no longer need, after preserving anything important. Apple explains how to review and manage usage in Manage your iCloud storage. If you do upgrade, plan options and prices vary by region and can change; check the choices shown in Settings rather than relying on a price quoted elsewhere.

Do not buy iCloud+ just to fix a locally full phone
If the iPhone’s storage meter is full, more cloud capacity by itself will not make extra room for apps, downloads or other local content. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, review the recommendations and app-by-app usage, then delete or offload content you do not need. For large photo libraries, optimise storage may reduce the local photo footprint if you want to use iCloud Photos and have enough cloud space for the originals.

Use Optimise iPhone Storage for a smaller local photo library
With iCloud Photos enabled and Optimise iPhone Storage selected, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud, while space-saving copies are kept on the iPhone as needed. This can free local room occupied by photos and videos, but it relies on cloud capacity for the originals and does not add physical storage to the device. Apple describes the option in Manage your photo and video storage.

Keep originals on the phone if local access matters more
If you want full-resolution originals stored locally, Apple’s photo-sync guide says to choose Download and Keep Originals. That uses iPhone storage, so it may not suit a device already short on space. See Back up and sync your photos and videos with iCloud.

If you would rather keep media out of iCloud, Apple recommends transferring photos and videos you do not want in iCloud to a computer when you need more device space. That creates an archive outside the phone; it does not expand iPhone capacity. A computer archive could be kept on an external drive, but the cited Apple guidance does not establish support for any particular drive or direct iPhone connection. Check compatibility for your iPhone, connector and drive before choosing hardware. Apple’s transfer guidance is in Manage your photo and video storage.

How to diagnose which storage is full
- Check local capacity: open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review the used space, recommendations and apps listed.
- Check cloud capacity: open Settings > [your name] > iCloud, then Storage or Manage Storage. Review what is using the account’s space.
- Match the fix to the meter: manage or move local content if iPhone Storage is the problem; manage iCloud data or consider iCloud+ if cloud storage is the problem.
- For a photo-related local shortage: decide whether you want optimised local copies through iCloud Photos or full-resolution originals stored on the phone.
