Start at Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Check the recommendations and which apps or categories are using the most room, then remove replaceable downloads and files before touching anything you may want to keep. Offload an app to remove the app while preserving its documents and data; delete it only when you no longer need that related data. For photos, choose between iCloud Photos and a verified export to another device or drive—deleting synced photos can delete them from your other devices too.
1. Check what is actually using iPhone storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. The screen shows available capacity and app-by-app usage, and may offer recommendations. Begin with the largest items shown on your phone rather than following a fixed cleanup list: storage needs vary, and there is no reliable amount of space that a particular action will free for every user.

Some cached or temporary data may not appear as user-deletable app data. If an app looks large, inspect its own downloads and content before assuming that deleting it is the right fix. Apple’s iPhone and iPad storage guidance explains the storage screen and app options.

2. Remove downloads and files you can replace
Look for content stored locally that you have already watched, heard, or can download again. Check downloaded films and shows, music and podcasts, as well as files saved in the Files app. Removing a local download is different from deleting the account or original content it came from; confirm the item is only a device copy before removing it.

Apple identifies downloaded videos and Files documents among the items to review, but the space recovered depends on the actual items on your iPhone. Apple’s iPhone guide to managing storage lists common cleanup targets.
3. Offload apps when you want to keep their data
Offloading removes an app but retains its documents and data, so reinstalling it can restore access to that retained information. Deleting removes the app and its related data. Apple describes offloading this way: “Offload the app, which frees up storage used by the app, but keeps its documents and data.”

Messages and its attachments can use iCloud storage when Messages in iCloud is enabled. Review large attachments and remove only those you do not need. With Messages in iCloud, deletions can affect messages and attachments on other devices using the same account; the amount of space recovered depends on your messages and device.

Photos can take substantial local space, but “move” and “optimize” are different approaches. With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage, full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud while smaller, space-saving versions are kept on the iPhone as needed. This uses iCloud capacity; check that you have enough available before relying on it. Apple explains how Optimize Storage works.

- 【How to Transfer in iPhone iPad】Requires iOS 13 and Higher: Simply insert the flash drive into your iPhone iPad, then go to the "Files" app, Click back to “Browse” and find the flash drive named “Untitled”, Move photos videos and files to your iPad or iPhone as needed.
Alternatively, export originals to a computer or compatible external storage device. Verify that the exported files open at the destination before deleting the phone copies. If iCloud Photos is on, deleting a photo or video on one signed-in device also deletes it from other devices using the same Apple Account. An iCloud Photos library is a synced library, not a separate archive that protects you from synced deletion. See Apple’s explanation of photo deletion and storage.
Export photos to a connected drive
- Connect an external storage device to the iPhone using its Lightning or USB-C connection, with an adapter if needed.
- In Photos, select the items to copy, then tap Share > Export Unmodified Original.
- Choose the connected device under Locations, then tap Save.
- Check the destination and confirm the exported items are present before deleting any iPhone copies.
Apple notes that this export action sends the unmodified original for edited photos and videos, and that locked items in the Hidden album are not transferred. Drive compatibility matters: Apple’s guide specifies a single data partition and supported formats including APFS, HFS+, exFAT, FAT32, or FAT. Some hard drives need external power, and adapters may be required. Check the guidance for your device and connection in Apple’s photo and video export steps and Apple’s external storage requirements.
