To run an A/B test without causing cumulative layout shift (CLS), assign the variant before the browser renders the page and return that variant in the initial HTML whenever possible. If the decision must happen in the browser and affect the first viewport, apply it before first paint with a small render-blocking script—but recognize that this delays visible content. In either case, keep control and treatment layouts compatible, reserve space for late-arriving content, and measure both page loads and later user interactions.
Why A/B tests can cause flicker and layout shift
Flicker and CLS are related, but they are not the same problem. Flicker occurs when a visitor sees the original version before the experiment changes it. CLS measures unexpected movement of visible content. Hiding the first version may prevent a visible flash, but it does not ensure that the final version fits the same space or avoids moving nearby content. See Google Chrome’s guidance on flicker-free client-side A/B testing and web.dev’s CLS guidance.
A variant can change the DOM without causing CLS if it does not move existing visible elements. Conversely, inserting a larger headline, image, banner, or form above other visible content can shift those elements. Judge the result by the movement users experience, not by whether the experiment changed the DOM.
Which A/B testing approach is least likely to shift the page?
| Approach | When the variant is applied | First-paint and rendering trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Server-side assignment and rendering | The server selects the variant and includes it in the initial HTML response. | Avoids client-side flicker and the need to hold rendering for a browser-side decision. | Performance-critical pages, especially when the experiment changes visible content. |
| Client-side application before first paint | A small script selects and applies the variant before the browser renders the page. | Can prevent visitors seeing the original variant, but delays first paint while the browser waits for the decision. | Cases where server-side assignment is not feasible and the variant must affect the initial viewport. |
| Client-side application after rendering | The browser first renders one version, then JavaScript changes it. | Can expose visitors to a flash and may shift surrounding content if the variant changes its footprint. | Experiments that do not affect initial visible content, or where the change can be applied without moving existing content. |
How to choose and apply a variant
Prefer server-side assignment for performance-critical pages
Decide eligibility and assign the variant on the server, then render the chosen version in the initial response. The browser’s first paint can then show the assigned treatment or control without first displaying another variant and swapping it later. Where possible, decide on the server which visitors are in the experiment so visitors outside it do not receive unnecessary testing code. Google Chrome’s modern guidance describes server-side approaches as eliminating flicker without render-blocking cost.

If server-side assignment is not feasible and the variant must change what appears in the initial viewport, Google Chrome’s current guidance recommends putting the experiment script in the document <head> and using blocking="render". For an external script, use async as well: parsing can continue while rendering waits for the script’s decision and application. Keep this path small and fast; move heavier analytics and tracking out of it.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
This approach trades a possible flash for a delay before the first paint. Do not treat that delay as a free fix. Avoid the blanket pattern of setting the entire page to opacity: 0 until an experimentation SDK responds: it sacrifices progressive rendering and can leave invisible content clickable. If a legacy platform requires page hiding, account for that user-visible and performance cost and consider server assignment or limiting the protected area to the experiment component.
How to keep control and treatment layouts stable
Compare footprints at supported viewport sizes
Before launch, compare each variant’s dimensions and responsive behavior at the viewport sizes your audience uses. A longer headline, differently sized image, added control, or injected content can push material below it. Make the variants occupy compatible space where possible, and test the layouts at the breakpoints where their content wraps or rearranges.

Reserve space for content that arrives late
When a component’s final size is not known at first render, reserve a suitable slot before its content arrives. CSS min-height or aspect-ratio can help, with values appropriate to each breakpoint. Avoid inserting content above visible elements without reserving room. Also avoid collapsing a reserved slot after a control, no-fill, or other outcome: removing that space can itself shift content. The web.dev guide to optimizing CLS explains space reservation and the risk of shifts from both insertion and removal.

How to measure whether the experiment shifts the page
Use lab checks to find regressions
Run repeatable lab checks for both control and treatment. In browser developer tools, inspect layout-shift records to investigate what likely caused movement, not just which elements were displaced. Check the page during loading and after interactions that reveal or alter experiment content.

Validate with field data as well as lab results
Synthetic tests are useful for controlled comparisons, but they usually cover a simulated page load. Field data reflects real devices, networks, personalization, and interactions, and can reveal shifts after the initial load that a lab run misses. Compare control and treatment with consistent traffic segmentation, across relevant devices and viewport sizes, and through the parts of the page lifecycle affected by the experiment.
Use CLS of 0.1 or less at the 75th percentile as a page-level guardrail, segmented for mobile and desktop, as described in web.dev’s CLS guidance. This target applies to the whole page, not just the experiment component; a passing lab load alone does not establish that post-load shifts are absent. If the experiment changes advertising slots, consult Google Publisher Tag’s layout-shift measurement guidance as well.
