How to Fix an SSD That Freezes or Goes Offline After a Windows Update

An SSD disappearing after Windows Update does not prove the update caused it. Protect your data, check storage health and device status, then choose the right repair path.

If an SSD freezes or disappears after a Windows update, protect your files first, then determine whether Windows, a driver, the SSD, or its connection is actually at fault. The timing alone does not prove the update caused the problem. Work through the checks below before attempting firmware changes, Windows repair, or replacement.

1. Back up files you can still access

Copy your most important accessible files to a separate drive or trusted cloud backup before changing drivers, running repair operations, or updating firmware. Microsoft advises backing up personal files before trying Windows Update troubleshooting steps: Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guide.

If the SSD is the Windows boot drive and keeps vanishing, avoid optional benchmarks and repeated stress tests. If irreplaceable files are at risk and the drive is becoming less detectable, prioritize professional data-recovery advice over repair attempts.

2. Record what is happening

Before changing anything, note the details that help distinguish a Windows problem from a device or connection problem:

#1 Best Overall

  • Your Windows version and build, plus the update date or KB number if available.
  • The SSD’s make, model, and interface if known, and whether it is the boot drive or a secondary drive.
  • Whether it disappears only in Windows, appears in Device Manager, or is also absent from the computer’s firmware setup.
  • Any stop code, storage-health warning, Event Viewer error, or manufacturer diagnostic result.
  • Whether the problem began immediately after the update or had happened intermittently before.

Unexpected restarts and stop codes can result from hardware, a driver, or software; timing by itself does not identify which. See Microsoft’s guidance on unexpected restarts and stop-code errors.

3. Check Windows storage health and Device Manager

Review the disk’s health status

On supported Windows versions, open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes, select the affected disk, then open Properties. Microsoft identifies three critical warnings: spare capacity below the manufacturer’s threshold, degraded reliability due to significant media errors or an internal NVM subsystem error, and read-only state. The page may also show estimated remaining life, available spare, and temperature.

Windows’ built-in monitoring described here applies to NVM SSDs, not SATA SSDs or HDDs. A missing warning therefore does not establish that every kind of SSD is healthy. If Windows shows a critical warning, take it seriously, preserve accessible files, and contact the device maker or computer support. Details: Microsoft’s critical storage warning guidance.

Look for marked devices

Open Device Manager and check for a warning symbol on storage or controller devices. If Windows is repeatedly restarting with a stop code, Microsoft suggests trying Safe Mode and checking marked devices. A suspect driver may need an update; if that does not help, Microsoft says disabling or uninstalling the device may be considered.

SABRENT Tool-Free NVMe & SATA M.2 SSD Enclosure, USB 3.2 Type-C (EC-SNVE)
  • ENCLOSURE ONLY, SSD NOT INCLUDED: This is the case you put your own M.2 SSD into, not a drive with storage inside. 100% tool-free, so the SSD installs and comes out in seconds with no screwdriver.
  • FITS M.2 NVMe AND SATA: Works with both M.2 PCIe NVMe and M.2 SATA SSDs in 2242, 2260 and 2280 lengths. Bare drives only, no room for a drive with a pre-installed heatsink. It does NOT take 2.5in SATA drives or mSATA.
  • 10GBPS USB 3.2 TYPE-C: Up to 10Gbps, and up to 1000MB/s in real transfers. Backward compatible with USB 3.1 and USB 3.0 at their own speed limits. Bus powered, no drivers and no external power supply.
  • SLIM ALUMINUM BUILD: Ultra-slim aluminum case with an ABS frame, with a thermal pad to move heat off the drive. Light enough to live in a laptop bag, solid enough to survive it.
  • IN THE BOX: Enclosure, 8in Type-C to Type-C cable and user manual. Works with Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.5 or later and Linux. Register on the manufacturer's website for extended warranty service.

Be cautious with storage-controller changes: use the computer or motherboard maker’s instructions. Do not switch controller modes or install a generic driver unless you understand the system configuration, as an unsuitable change can prevent Windows from starting.

4. Use the exact SSD or computer maker’s guidance

Identify the SSD model and use its manufacturer’s official diagnostic utility or support instructions. A manufacturer utility may report drive health or offer firmware updates, but its features are model-specific. For example, Samsung says Magician provides health and firmware functions for Samsung SSDs, and its support page lists notices for particular models. Those releases are not general fixes for other brands or models: Samsung Consumer Storage Support Tools.

  • Flip-Open Tool-Free Design: Open the cover, insert your NVMe SSD, lock it in place, and close—no screws or tools required. Fast and simple for upgrades, cloning, troubleshooting, and portable tech work.
  • Cooler 10Gbps Performance: The aluminum enclosure presses the thermal pad directly against your SSD for better heat transfer and more stable 10Gbps speeds than slide-in enclosures. Ideal for long transfers and heavy workloads.
  • NVMe Only for Maximum Speed: Supports M.2 NVMe SSDs in sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 up to at least 8TB. Not compatible with M.2 SATA SSDs.
  • USB C Plug-and-Play: Connect with USB C for up to 10Gbps using USB 3.2 Gen 2. No drivers or external power needed. Works with laptops, desktops, gaming handhelds, and USB C devices.
  • Portable and Durable Aluminum Build: Reinforced ABS frame with an aluminum alloy top keeps your SSD protected and cool. Slim, lightweight, and perfect for creators, gamers, and anyone needing fast portable storage.

Back up before firmware work and follow the instructions for the exact model. If Windows cannot see the SSD, the manufacturer utility may not see it either; a missing listing in the utility alone does not prove the drive has failed. Share the model, symptoms, and any diagnostic results with the SSD or computer maker if the cause remains unclear.

5. Decide whether Windows repair fits the evidence

If the SSD remains accessible and its health checks do not indicate drive failure, follow Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance for appropriate update, driver, restart, and system-file repair options. Preserve files before repair operations: Windows Update troubleshooting.

Windows 11 repair reinstall

If the evidence points to damaged Windows components rather than a failing or disappearing drive, Windows 11 offers Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves apps, files, and settings. The option may be unavailable on older Windows versions or on devices managed by a work or school. See Microsoft’s repair-reinstall instructions.

6. Check the April 2026 backup-driver issue only if it matches

A narrow exception can affect backup image operations rather than SSD recognition. Microsoft says updates released on or after April 14, 2026 may block vulnerable versions of the third-party psmounterex.sys kernel driver when vulnerable-driver blocklist enforcement is enabled. Certain backup programs may then fail to mount or browse/restore disk images, even if backup creation still works.

If the problem is specifically mounting or restoring a backup image, check Event Viewer > Applications and Service Logs > Microsoft > Windows > CodeIntegrity > Operational for Event ID 3077. Microsoft recommends updating the affected backup software or contacting its vendor. This behavior is not evidence that the SSD itself has gone offline: Microsoft’s April 2026 driver-block notice.

When to seek support or replace the SSD

  • Missing in firmware setup as well as Windows: this points away from a Windows-only repair. Ask the computer maker or a qualified technician to check the drive and its connection.
  • Windows reports a critical health warning, or the manufacturer’s diagnostics indicate failure: preserve accessible files and contact the SSD maker or computer support.
  • The drive remains detectable and checks do not indicate failure: continue with supported Windows and driver troubleshooting before considering replacement.
  • Replacement is confirmed as necessary: check the computer’s supported capacity, physical form factor, and SATA or NVMe interface before choosing a drive.

Do not replace an SSD solely because the trouble began after an update, and do not reinstall Windows while an unstable drive holds the only copy of important files.
