To play iPhone music through a wired speaker, match the iPhone’s connector to the speaker’s audio input. For a speaker with a 3.5 mm input, use a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with an iPhone 15 or later, or a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter with a Lightning iPhone, then connect a suitable audio cable if needed.
Check the iPhone port and speaker input first
Look at the connector on your iPhone: Apple says iPhone 15 and later models use USB-C; earlier models may use Lightning. Then check the speaker or amplifier for an audio input marked 3.5 mm, AUX, or similar. The adapter path below applies when the speaker has a compatible 3.5 mm audio input. An adapter cannot make an incompatible speaker input work by itself.

Connect a USB-C iPhone to a 3.5 mm speaker input
- Connect Apple’s USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter to the iPhone.
- Connect a 3.5 mm audio cable from the adapter to the speaker’s matching audio input. If the adapter and speaker connect directly, a separate cable may not be needed.
- Start music on the iPhone and raise the speaker’s volume. If the iPhone presents an audio-output choice, select the wired connection.
Confirm the speaker has a 3.5 mm input before choosing this adapter; Apple documents it as a way to connect USB-C iPhone models to other speakers or headphones.

Connect a Lightning iPhone to a 3.5 mm speaker input
- Connect Apple’s Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter to the iPhone.
- Run a 3.5 mm audio cable from the adapter to the speaker’s matching input, if a direct connection is not possible.
- Play music and turn up the speaker. Choose the wired output if the phone prompts you to select one.
Apple says this adapter supports 3.5 mm headphones and other audio devices on Lightning-equipped iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models running iOS 10 or later.

If the speaker does not have a 3.5 mm input
Check the speaker or amplifier’s manual or port labels to identify its actual audio input. Then verify that the specific cable or converter supports both that input and the iPhone adapter’s output. The 3.5 mm adapters described above do not establish compatibility with every speaker connector, so do not assume an adapter alone resolves a mismatch.
When a USB-C-to-Lightning adapter may help
If you have a USB-C iPhone and a Lightning audio accessory, Apple documents a USB-C to Lightning Adapter for connecting USB-C iPhone or iPad models to Lightning accessories for charging, data, and audio. This is a different path from connecting a speaker with a 3.5 mm input. Apple notes that some features require iOS 17 or later and recommends using only one device or cable at a time with this adapter.

Troubleshoot no sound
- Check that the adapter matches the iPhone’s port: USB-C or Lightning.
- Make sure the cable is plugged into the speaker’s audio input, not an output or an unrelated port.
- Confirm that the cable and speaker input match, then check the speaker’s power and volume.
- If the speaker lacks a 3.5 mm input, identify its actual input and consult its documentation before choosing a converter.
- Do not assume an arbitrary USB-C dongle or third-party Lightning adapter is compatible; the Apple instructions linked above document Apple’s adapter paths, not a compatibility list for other products.
Choose the connection that fits your setup

If you already own the port-matched adapter and the speaker accepts 3.5 mm audio, you may only need the right cable. If simultaneous charging is also important, verify that the specific adapter or hub supports charging and wired playback together before relying on that setup.
