iPhone Lock Screen vs. Home Screen Wallpaper: What Changes?

iPhone lets you pair one wallpaper across both screens or customize the Home Screen separately. The Lock Screen also has its own clock, widgets, styles, and controls.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Lock Screen and Home Screen are separate iPhone surfaces, and you can give them the same wallpaper or different looks. Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use one selection on both, or Customize Home Screen to choose a separate background. The Lock Screen also has its own clock, widgets, and controls; the Home Screen sits behind your app icons and widgets.

What each wallpaper changes

Surface What you see Wallpaper options and controls
Lock Screen The screen shown when iPhone wakes or is locked. Depending on the wallpaper, you can customize widgets, clock appearance, styles, and controls. The available options vary with the selected wallpaper. Apple’s iPhone wallpaper instructions
Home Screen Your app icons and widgets, displayed over the background. You can use the paired wallpaper or customize this background with a color, another photo, or blur. Apple’s iPhone User Guide

How to use the same or a different wallpaper

These steps follow Apple’s current iOS 26 guidance. Menu wording and options may differ on other iOS versions.

  1. Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper, or touch and hold the Lock Screen to open the wallpaper gallery. Apple Support
  2. Choose a photo, Photo Shuffle, or a built-in wallpaper, then tap Add.
  3. Tap Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the selection on both screens. To make the Home Screen different, tap Customize Home Screen, then choose a color, a photo, or blur.
  4. To adjust the Lock Screen itself, use its Customize control. The options shown depend partly on the wallpaper you selected.

What changes when you customize the Lock Screen

The Lock Screen is more than a background: its clock, widgets, styles, and controls can be part of the layout. Those additions can make information visible at a glance, while also covering or competing visually with parts of a photo. Apple notes that available customization options depend on the chosen wallpaper. Apple Support

You can also create multiple Lock Screens and link one to a Focus, then switch between them for contexts such as work, sleep, or personal time. Apple’s iPhone User Guide

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.

  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Home Screen icons have their own appearance settings

In iOS 26, app icons and widgets can have light, dark, automatic, clear, or tinted appearances, and they can be resized. These settings affect how the Home Screen looks against its wallpaper, but they do not select or replace the wallpaper itself. Apple’s iPhone User Guide

Choosing a paired or separate look

  • Choose a pair when you want one image to carry through both screens and prefer a coordinated look.
  • Customize the Home Screen when a simpler color or blurred background would make icons and widgets easier to distinguish, or when you want a different photo behind them.
  • Spend more time on the Lock Screen if you want to arrange its clock, widgets, or controls around the image.

iOS 26 spatial wallpaper qualification

On iPhone 12 or later, certain eligible photos can be used as 3D spatial wallpapers. Apple says the effect appears on the Lock Screen, including when you set a wallpaper pair or customize the Home Screen. Not every photo qualifies; eligibility depends on the image. Apple Support
