A travel router gives your devices a private local Wi-Fi network while it connects to a hotel, airport, or café hotspot. That separation is useful, but it does not encrypt the router’s connection to the hotspot. Secure the router itself, use HTTPS and—when configured and verified—a VPN, and treat captive-portal workarounds as temporary changes to your protections.
What a travel router protects—and what it does not
A travel router can connect to a venue’s Wi-Fi in repeater mode and provide a familiar local network for your phone, laptop, and other devices. GL.iNet describes this arrangement as a way to connect several devices through one router connection. It can make connecting easier, but it does not make the venue’s network trustworthy or automatically encrypt traffic leaving the router.

NIST warns that public Wi-Fi may not encrypt traffic, allowing unencrypted communications to be intercepted. Even when an app uses encryption, an observer may still be able to see metadata such as domains, IP addresses, and services. A private SSID is therefore a local-network convenience, not a substitute for HTTPS or a VPN.

Connect to the hotspot and finish its login
Join the venue network using the router’s repeater or equivalent upstream Wi-Fi mode. Many hotels and other public networks require a captive portal: a web page where you authenticate, accept terms, or otherwise interact before internet access is enabled. The exact sequence and labels depend on the router and its firmware.

- Connect your phone or computer to the travel router’s Wi-Fi.
- Open the router’s admin panel using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Choose the upstream Wi-Fi or repeater function and connect the router to the venue’s network.
- Open a browser and complete any captive-portal login or terms screen the venue presents.
- After login, confirm that the router has internet access and that your intended VPN and DNS settings are active again.
GL.iNet’s instructions for its routers describe connecting a device to the router, opening its admin panel, and then connecting the router to the hotspot. These are vendor-specific directions, not universal menu steps.
If the captive portal does not appear
VPN or DNS settings can interfere with portal access. GL.iNet documents troubleshooting that can include temporarily disabling a VPN or changing DNS behavior. Its Public Hotspot Login Mode switches DNS to automatic and suspends some services; the vendor warns that this may leak network activity to the hotspot provider, such as a hotel or shopping mall. It is a portal troubleshooting mode, not a security upgrade.

If you use such a mode, treat the change as temporary: finish authentication, restore your intended DNS and VPN configuration, and verify that the VPN tunnel is connected before sending sensitive traffic. If you cannot restore or verify the protections, avoid sensitive tasks on that connection or use cellular service when practical.
Device limits and MAC-address recognition
Some networks limit the number of connected devices or recognize devices by their MAC addresses, which can complicate router setup. GL.iNet documents MAC cloning and asking hotel staff to whitelist the router as possible troubleshooting options. They are vendor-specific and may not work on every network. Follow the venue’s access terms and instructions; a travel router does not guarantee a connection or authorize bypassing network restrictions.

Protect traffic on the public uplink
Use HTTPS for websites
HTTPS helps protect the privacy and integrity of data exchanged with a particular website and validates the website’s identity. It does not hide all metadata or protect traffic from every kind of attack. Check that the browser shows a secure connection, and do not dismiss certificate or security warnings to make a site load.

Use a VPN, then verify it
NIST’s public-Wi-Fi guidance says a VPN can encrypt application communications before they leave the device. This is a different layer of protection from HTTPS, not a guarantee that every risk is eliminated. A VPN also does not make a malicious site safe or prevent every form of tracking.

You can configure a VPN on each device or, if the router supports it, as a router-level client. A correctly configured router-level VPN may cover devices connected through that router, but support and behavior vary by router firmware and VPN service. Check the current instructions for both products and confirm the tunnel’s connection status. Do not assume the VPN is active simply because you joined the travel router’s Wi-Fi.
What to check when choosing a travel router
Compare the specifications and documentation for the exact model and firmware version you are considering. Prioritize:
- Whether the manufacturer maintains the firmware and publishes security updates.
- Separate administrator and Wi-Fi credentials that you can set yourself.
- Support for the upstream connection modes you need, such as Wi-Fi repeater or Ethernet.
- Clear captive-portal guidance for the current firmware.
- VPN client support and a way to verify connection status; check compatibility with your chosen VPN service.
- Travel-specific needs such as size, power, cellular support, and Wi-Fi standards, based on current model specifications.
