iPhone location privacy has three separate controls: Location Services governs location access by apps and system services; Find My handles device finding and optional person-to-person sharing; and App Tracking Transparency controls certain cross-company tracking. Changing one does not automatically change the others.
Which iPhone privacy setting should I change?
| Control | What it governs | Where to change it | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location Services | Location access by apps and system services | Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services | Turning it off limits features, and emergency-call location may still be used. |
| Find My | Finding Apple devices and sharing a person’s location with selected people | Find My app or Settings > [your name] > Find My | Offline finding depends on the Find My network and its availability; turning that network off reduces lost-device recovery options. |
| App Tracking Transparency | Permission for tracking across apps or websites owned by other companies | Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking | It does not control an app’s Location Services permission. |
Apple says apps must ask before using location and require permission from you. These controls govern Apple’s settings and services; a third-party app’s collection, retention, and sharing practices also depend on its own terms and privacy policy. See Apple’s Location Services privacy guidance and guide to what you share on iPhone.

How does GPS work on my iPhone?
GPS is one source of location information, not a synonym for every location estimate. When Location Services is permitted, iPhone can use available GPS, nearby Wi-Fi, cellular information, and Bluetooth signals. GPS availability is limited to iPhone and iPad models with cellular capability, according to Apple.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGPS accuracy depends on how many satellites the device can see. Buildings, walls, vehicle roofs, and mountains can block their signals; Wi-Fi or cellular information may be used until satellites are visible again. Apple recommends checking that the date, time, and time zone are correct and moving to a place with an unobstructed view in several directions. Accuracy can improve over several minutes, and Apple does not give a universal accuracy figure. Its Location Services guidance also cautions that Maps and other location-based data may be incomplete or inaccurate and can vary by location.

How do I turn off precise location for an app?
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Tap the app you want to review.
- Turn off Precise Location if approximate location is enough for that app.
- Review the app’s location access frequency and choose a permission that fits how you use it.
With Precise Location off, the app receives an approximate location rather than a specific one. This may suit broad local recommendations, while a task that depends on a more exact position may work less well. Apple notes that apps requesting background location can prompt reminders and show a map of locations they recently accessed. See the iOS 26 location-sharing guide.
What happens if I turn off Location Services?
Apple says apps cannot use location from Location Services in the foreground or background while the setting is off. This can limit Apple and third-party features that rely on location. It is not a guarantee that no location information can be used: Apple says location information may still be used for emergency calls. The setting is at Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.

Apple also describes its own location-data practices separately from third-party app behavior. When Location Services is on, the device periodically sends geotagged nearby Wi-Fi hotspot and cell-tower locations to Apple’s crowdsourced database. During transit, a GPS-enabled iPhone or iPad may also send GPS position, speed, direction, and barometric-pressure information for Apple’s crowdsourced transport and atmospheric databases. Apple says this crowdsourced data is encrypted and does not personally identify the user; that description should not be taken as a statement about how other services handle data. Details are in Apple’s privacy and Location Services article.
Can someone see my location in Find My?
Only if you share your location with them. Family Sharing by itself does not start person-to-person location sharing. When Family Sharing and Location Sharing are set up, family members may appear in Find My’s People tab, but sharing begins only when people share with one another.

To share, use the Find My app to choose a recipient and a sharing duration. You can pause or stop sharing, stop sharing with one person, or turn off Share My Location. Apple documents these choices in its guides to sharing your location in Find My and Find My and location sharing.
Can Find My locate an iPhone when it is offline or powered off?
Find My’s network can help locate some offline devices. A missing device broadcasts short-range Bluetooth signals, which nearby Apple devices can detect and relay as an approximate location. Apple says the relay is anonymous and end-to-end encrypted, and is designed to use little battery and data. The capability is not universal; availability depends on the device, settings, and region.

Apple’s personal-safety guide says the Find My network may locate an iPhone for up to 24 hours after it has been turned off or disconnected from the internet. That is a documented capability, not a guarantee in every situation. When powering down, users can disable the Find My network; if they do, that feature cannot be used to locate, lock, or erase the device if it is lost. See Apple’s Find My security overview and personal-safety guide.
Does turning off tracking stop apps from seeing my location?
No. App Tracking Transparency and Location Services are separate controls. Tracking permission concerns tracking across apps or websites owned by other companies, including for advertising or sharing information with data brokers. Location Services controls location access. If you want to review both, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Apple explains the distinction in its iPhone sharing and tracking guide.

What third-party location practices should I check?
Apple’s permissions do not establish how every app or website collects, retains, or shares information. Review the app’s privacy policy and terms, and consider whether its requested access is necessary for the feature you use. Apple’s Location Services article advises checking those policies.
One separate control applies to owners of Wi-Fi access points: Apple says they can opt out of its crowdsourced location database by appending _nomap to the network name. Apple notes that this does not work for hidden networks; it is not an iPhone setting.
