For NHL fanfiction, start with Archive of Our Own (AO3) and search its hockey-related fandom and relationship tags. For original hockey romance posted online, browse Inkitt’s Hockey Romance category. If you want a professionally published book, Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry is a clear hockey-romance starting point. These are different kinds of reading: fanfiction draws on existing fandoms, while original romance is written as a standalone story or series.
Choose between fanfiction and original hockey romance
Decide first whether you want stories connected to NHL fandom or original characters and plots. AO3 is a fanwork archive; it is a destination for fanfiction, including real-person fiction (often shortened to RPF), not a general storefront for published romance. A University of Waterloo repository search result discusses men’s hockey RPF posted to AO3, but it does not establish a platform-wide count or measure how common that material is.

For original online stories, Inkitt offers a Hockey Romance category. For a professionally published book, a publisher’s product page is a more direct route than browsing a user-uploaded story platform.

- Open AO3 and search for the hockey fandom or relationship tags that match what you want to read. Tag wording can help distinguish NHL-related stories, pairings, and other themes.
- Use the available filters to narrow results by rating and archive warnings, then read the tags and work description before opening a story.
- Check each work’s own details rather than assuming every story covers the same subjects or carries the same warnings. AO3 asks readers to observe creator-provided ratings and warnings and cautions that not every work will have full warnings.
AO3 is intended for transformative fanworks, not commercial promotion. Its Content Policy also makes clear that credit alone does not grant permission to upload another person’s work: “Crediting the original creator does not give you the right to upload, podfic, or translate someone else’s work without permission, regardless of whether the source is a fanwork or a professionally published work.” Naming a real athlete or crediting a source does not, by itself, establish permission to post a work.

Browse original hockey romance on Inkitt
Inkitt’s Hockey Romance category is a starting point for online romance stories featuring hockey. Check the story description and completion status on the individual listing, and confirm whether the story is original rather than fanfiction.
Do not treat Inkitt’s general genre category as a dependable NHL-fanfiction index. Inkitt’s support article says its Recently Updated and Recently Completed shelves exclude fanfiction, so those shelves are not a way to find hockey fanworks.
Try a published hockey romance
Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry is described by publisher Harlequin as a hockey romance. Harlequin lists Amazon among its retailer options, while Reid’s official book page confirms the title and genre. Availability, format, edition, and retailer listings can differ by country and change over time, so check the listing for your region.
If you want more books connected to Reid’s hockey-romance world, Harlequin’s Game Changers series page is a route to related titles. Check the publisher’s series information and local retailer listings for the reading order and formats available to you.

| What you want to read | Where to start | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| NHL or hockey fanfiction | AO3; search fandom and relationship tags | Ratings, archive warnings, tags, and the work description |
| Original online hockey romance | Inkitt’s Hockey Romance category | Whether the story is complete, its description, and whether it is original rather than fanfiction |
| A professionally published hockey romance | Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry or the Game Changers books | Local retailer availability, format, edition, and series order |
Readers also use broad searches such as “where to read hockey romance online” and “where to find NHL fanfiction.” Community discussions can suggest useful search wording, but they are anecdotes, not evidence of what most readers prefer. Likewise, do not assume every story on a platform is free or available without an account; check the specific work or retailer listing.
