Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo back up an external hard drive automatically, install a cloud-backup client on a computer that can read the drive, connect the drive, and select it in the client’s backup settings if required. Leave the computer online and awake while the first upload runs. Afterward, reconnect the drive regularly: backup services can stop retaining files from a drive that stays disconnected too long.
What you need before setting up automatic cloud backup
Cloud backup software runs on a computer; it does not usually upload a USB drive on its own. The computer must be able to access the external drive, and the drive must be connected whenever the client needs to upload new or changed files. Before choosing a service, confirm that its current instructions cover your operating system, drive format, connection type, and plan.

- A compatible computer and drive: Check the provider’s requirements for your operating system, filesystem, and removable media.
- A direct connection when required: Some services specify that the drive connect directly to the computer. Follow the provider’s instructions about hubs and adapters.
- Time for the first upload: The initial backup can take a while, depending on the amount of data and your internet connection. Keep the computer awake and online until the client shows that files have been uploaded or scheduled.
- A reconnection routine: If the drive is unplugged for an extended period, the service may remove its files from the backup. The allowed interval depends on the provider.
Set up the backup
- Check eligibility. Identify your computer’s operating system and the drive’s filesystem, then read the provider’s current external-drive instructions for that setup and plan.
- Install and sign in. Install the provider’s backup client on the computer that can read the drive and sign in to your account.
- Connect the drive. Attach it as directed by the provider. If its instructions require a direct connection, do not route it through a hub.
- Select the drive if needed. Open the client’s backup settings and confirm the external drive is included. Check that the displayed drive name and expected folders are present.
- Let the first upload run. Keep the computer connected to the internet and prevent it from sleeping before the initial upload is complete. Later additions and changes can upload only when the drive is connected and accessible to the client.
- Verify files in the service. Check the provider’s backup status, file list, or restore view for files from the external drive. A running client does not by itself prove that the right drive and files are included. If possible, test restoring a noncritical file.
- Plan to reconnect the drive. Set a reminder based on the provider’s retention rules, and review how it handles deleted files and version history.
How external-drive support differs by provider
These services do not have interchangeable drive requirements or retention rules. The details below are limited to the cited provider documentation; check the current instructions for your own operating system, filesystem, and plan before relying on a service.

| Backblaze Computer Backup | Backblaze documents backup of supported attached USB and FireWire drives, which can be selected in settings. Its 2023 guidance says a detached drive should be reconnected at least once every 30 days when using the default 30-day version-history setting. See Backblaze’s external-drive guidance and its current external-drive instructions. | Direct connection and the operating system’s ability to read and write the drive matter. Backblaze excludes some Windows removable-media configurations and Time Machine volumes; check its supported backup data documentation. Its Computer Backup is not additional storage, and deleting source files can remove them from the backup. |
| Carbonite Safe | The cited Windows support article describes external-drive backup on an eligible plan using a direct USB connection and an NTFS or FAT32 drive. It says to reconnect the drive within 180 days to keep it in backup. See Carbonite’s Windows external-drive instructions. | The cited instructions apply to Windows, not necessarily Mac or other plans. They exclude flash drives, SD cards, shared drives, and remotely located devices. |
| IDrive | IDrive’s Windows application FAQ says the application can back up mapped, USB, and external drives. See IDrive’s Windows application FAQ. | The cited FAQ does not establish cross-platform setup details or how long a disconnected drive remains in backup. Confirm those rules for your platform before relying on it. |
Keep the cloud copy from becoming an accidental archive
A computer-backup service may mirror changes to your source rather than preserve every file indefinitely. Backblaze’s documentation explicitly warns against uploading an external drive and then deleting its data from the drive, because the files are also deleted from Backblaze’s servers. Read your service’s version-history and deletion rules before treating the backup as a permanent archive, and keep the original files on the drive.

How to confirm the backup is working
Use the provider’s own file list or restore interface to check several representative files and folders from the external drive. For Backblaze, the “View/Restore Files” view and scheduled-file log are documented ways to check. If a file is missing, confirm the drive is connected and readable, selected for backup, and not excluded by the service’s compatibility rules; then check the client’s status and scheduled-file information.
