Use iPhone Handoff if you want the same number available on two iPhones and expect to alternate between them. Unlocking the phone you want makes it the active cellular device. Use eSIM Quick Transfer when you are replacing or permanently upgrading an iPhone; it moves the number to the new phone and disables that number on the old one.
Handoff and eSIM transfer solve different problems
The two features can sound interchangeable because both involve an iPhone number and an eSIM. They are not equivalent. Handoff creates a two-iPhone arrangement in which one number can be used on either handset. Quick Transfer performs a one-time move from an old iPhone to a new one.

| Question | iPhone Handoff | eSIM Quick Transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Use one phone number on two iPhones and switch between them | Move a number from a previous iPhone to a replacement or new primary iPhone |
| What happens to the old iPhone? | It remains enrolled; the number can become active on it again when you unlock it | The transferred number stops working on the previous iPhone after completion |
| How many phones are cellular-active at once? | One | One, on the new iPhone after the transfer |
| How you switch | Unlock the iPhone you want to use | Complete the transfer once; there is no ongoing two-phone switch |
| Key dependency | Both iPhones must meet Apple’s Handoff requirements and use a participating carrier | The carrier must support Quick Transfer |
That distinction determines the right choice. Handoff is for regular alternation; Quick Transfer is for migration.

Apple describes iPhone Handoff as a way to use one phone number between two devices and switch whenever you want. Calls, voicemail, messages—including iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS—Find My location, and iCloud-synced data follow the iPhone that is currently active.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Handoff does not make both iPhones simultaneously connected to the cellular network for the same number. Only one iPhone is cellular-active at a time. When you unlock the other enrolled iPhone, activity switches to that handset. The practical result is similar to carrying one line between two phones without performing a new eSIM transfer each time.
What “active” means in practice
- The iPhone you unlock becomes the phone associated with the active cellular service.
- Calls and text-message activity follow that active iPhone.
- Find My location follows the iPhone that is currently active, rather than showing both as the active phone for the shared number.
- Only one handset has cellular activity for the number at any moment.
Because the switch is tied to unlocking the other iPhone, Handoff is suited to deliberate, repeated changes—for example, using a compact iPhone while traveling and a larger one at a desk. It is not a method for giving two people independent, simultaneous use of one number.
Handoff requirements and availability
Apple’s current requirements are specific. Before you try to enroll the phones, check every item rather than assuming that two recent iPhones are enough.
- Two iPhones running iOS 27 or later. Both devices need the required operating-system version.
- Wi-Fi. The phones need Wi-Fi for the Handoff arrangement and setup prompts.
- The same Apple Account. Both iPhones must be signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Messages in iCloud. This must be enabled for the account used by both phones.
- FaceTime and iMessage signed in with that Apple Account. The communication services need to use the same account on each iPhone.
- An eSIM from a participating carrier. Carrier support is required; an eSIM alone does not guarantee eligibility.
Apple lists T-Mobile in the United States and Telekom in Germany for Handoff availability in its current support information. Availability can change by country, carrier, plan, and account configuration. Carrier fees may apply, so confirm the specific line’s eligibility and any charge before enrolling.

How to set up iPhone Handoff
Set up both iPhones while they are nearby. Keep them unlocked and connected to Wi-Fi so that each device can respond to the enrollment prompts.
- On one of the iPhones, open Settings.
- Tap Cellular.
- Choose Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
- Select Use Number on This iPhone and Another.
- Follow the on-screen prompts on both nearby iPhones.
If the option is missing, do not substitute a normal eSIM transfer and assume Handoff was enabled. Recheck the iOS version, Apple Account, Wi-Fi, Messages in iCloud, FaceTime, iMessage, and carrier participation. A missing menu can indicate that one of those prerequisites is not satisfied or that the carrier does not offer the feature for the line.
What to verify after enrollment
- Unlock the first iPhone and confirm that it behaves as the active phone for the number.
- Lock it, then unlock the second iPhone and verify that activity moves to the second handset.
- Test the services you rely on—calls, voicemail, and messaging—after each switch.
- Check Find My if location visibility matters, because the active iPhone is the one that represents the shared number’s current activity.
Performing the switch test before leaving home gives you a chance to resolve a carrier or account issue while both devices and Wi-Fi are available.

Quick Transfer is a migration workflow for moving a phone number from a previous iPhone to a new iPhone on a supported carrier. It is intentionally one-directional: after the number is transferred, Apple says it stops working on the previous iPhone.

- Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
- Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID
This makes Quick Transfer the appropriate choice for a replacement phone, an upgrade that will become your sole primary handset, or a failed-device replacement. It is not designed for keeping two iPhones ready for regular alternation.
How to transfer an eSIM to a new iPhone
Start on the new iPhone and keep the previous iPhone nearby. The exact wording can vary slightly depending on what numbers and carrier options are detected.
- On the new iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap Cellular.
- Choose Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
- Select Transfer From Nearby iPhone, or choose the listed phone number if that is what appears.
- Confirm the request on the previous iPhone.
- Wait for the transfer to complete before treating the new iPhone as the active phone.
Once completed, the transferred number no longer works on the previous iPhone. The old handset is therefore not a second active phone for that line. If you intended to alternate between devices, stop and use Handoff instead of completing Quick Transfer.
Which option is better for common situations?
| Your situation | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You alternate between two iPhones several times a week | Handoff | The number can move between the enrolled phones by unlocking the one you want. |
| You bought a new iPhone and will retire the old one | Quick Transfer | The workflow moves service to the new phone and ends service for that number on the old phone. |
| Your old iPhone is being replaced because it is damaged | Quick Transfer | It is designed to migrate the line to the replacement device rather than maintain two active handsets. |
| You need the broadest possible carrier choice | Check Quick Transfer first, then verify Handoff | Quick Transfer is generally the broader transfer workflow, while Handoff is limited to participating carriers and the listed requirements. |
| You want two people to answer the same number at the same time | Neither feature | Handoff permits only one cellular-active iPhone at a time, and Quick Transfer leaves the number on one phone. |
| You want to keep an old iPhone as a permanent second handset | Handoff, if eligible | Quick Transfer disables the number on the previous iPhone after the move. |
Carrier support is the deciding gate
Both features depend on the carrier, but the dependency appears differently. Handoff requires a participating carrier that supports the two-iPhone arrangement. Apple’s listed examples are T-Mobile in the USA and Telekom in Germany; a carrier outside those listings may or may not support the feature, and support can depend on the particular line.

Quick Transfer also requires carrier support, but it is a standard move-to-new-phone workflow on supported networks. Do not infer eligibility from the fact that your carrier supports eSIM activation in general. Ask whether your exact plan and number can use Quick Transfer, and whether Handoff is available if you need ongoing two-phone use.
Ask the carrier these questions before changing service:
- Is iPhone Handoff available for this number and plan in my country?
- Does the carrier charge a fee to enroll in Handoff or move the eSIM?
- Is eSIM Quick Transfer supported between these two iPhones?
- Are any carrier-managed features restricted to the main iPhone?
Apple Watch and carrier-service limitations
Handoff does not automatically switch an Apple Watch pairing when you change the active iPhone. If your watch depends on a particular iPhone relationship, plan that pairing separately rather than expecting the watch to follow every Handoff switch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesApple also notes that some carrier services can be limited to the main iPhone. Examples include Call Forwarding, Caller ID, and carrier account management. The shared number arrangement therefore does not guarantee that every carrier control appears identically on both handsets.

Decide which iPhone is your “main” device for these services before relying on Handoff. If your use depends heavily on call-forwarding controls, caller-ID settings, or carrier account tools, verify how the carrier handles those functions.
Switching between two iPhones with Handoff
Before leaving the setup location
- Update both iPhones to iOS 27 or later.
- Sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices.
- Connect both to Wi-Fi.
- Confirm Messages in iCloud is enabled.
- Sign in to FaceTime and iMessage with the shared Apple Account.
- Confirm that the line uses an eligible eSIM and participating carrier.
- Complete one test switch in each direction.
When you want to change phones
- Take the other enrolled iPhone.
- Unlock it.
- Wait for the active-phone change to complete.
- Use that iPhone for calls, voicemail, and messages.
Remember that unlocking is the switching action. Simply carrying both phones, waking the screen, or opening an app does not mean both are cellular-active.
What happens if you choose the wrong workflow?
You use Quick Transfer but wanted two active options
The transferred number stops working on the previous iPhone once the move finishes. You would need to investigate whether your carrier and devices can be enrolled in Handoff rather than treating Quick Transfer as a reversible two-phone toggle. Do not begin a Quick Transfer until you are certain that the destination phone is meant to become the primary device.

You expect Handoff but the enrollment option does not appear
Check the complete requirement set, not just the phone models. Confirm iOS 27 or later on both iPhones, Wi-Fi, the same Apple Account, Messages in iCloud, FaceTime and iMessage sign-in, and a participating carrier eSIM. If all software and account settings are correct, carrier availability is the next item to verify.
The number seems to be on the wrong iPhone
Unlock the iPhone you intend to use and wait for the active-device change. If service does not move, repeat the requirement and carrier checks before attempting an eSIM transfer. Quick Transfer is a different operation and will disable the number on the previous iPhone after completion.
A decision checklist
Choose Handoff when every statement below is true:
- You genuinely need one number on two iPhones.
- You expect to switch between them repeatedly.
- Both iPhones can run iOS 27 or later.
- Both use the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi, Messages in iCloud, FaceTime, and iMessage setup.
- Your carrier supports Handoff for the line and you accept any applicable fee.
Choose Quick Transfer when these statements describe your plan:
- You are moving to a replacement or new primary iPhone.
- You do not need the number to remain active on the previous iPhone.
- Your carrier supports the transfer workflow.
- You can keep the previous iPhone nearby to approve the move.
Bottom line for using two iPhones
Handoff is the better technology for two-iPhone use: it shares one number between two enrolled phones and lets you switch by unlocking the desired handset, while keeping only one cellular-active at a time. eSIM Quick Transfer is better for a permanent move to one new iPhone because it deactivates the number on the previous phone. Verify carrier support, regional availability, fees, and the iOS 27-or-later requirements before choosing.
