For a handheld group selfie, the iPhone front camera is usually the easier choice because you can see the group and adjust the framing on screen. The rear camera can work well when someone else takes the photo or you can set the phone in position first. Neither camera is automatically better for image quality: the result depends on the iPhone model and shooting conditions.
Front or rear camera: which should you use?

A selfie stick or phone holder can help put the phone farther away or keep it steady, but it is optional; it is not a guarantee of better image quality.

How Center Stage helps on supported iPhones
Apple’s guide lists iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air as models whose camera frame can automatically zoom and rotate for group selfies when faces are detected. Apple advises that everyone look at the camera and stay within 10 feet for best results. This is guidance for the supported group-selfie feature, not a guarantee that every group will fit in every scene.

How to set up a group selfie
- Open the Camera app and select the front camera.
- On a supported model, use the camera controls to enable Center Stage’s Auto Zoom and Auto Rotate options for group selfies.
- Have everyone move into the frame, look at the camera, and stay within 10 feet for best results.
- Check the framing on screen and take the photo using the shutter control. If you need the phone farther away or steadier, you can position it in a holder and use the on-screen shutter or a supported shutter control.
If you manually tap selfie zoom or rotate, the selected Center Stage setting turns off. Repeat the setup to turn it back on if you want automatic framing again.
Should you use the rear camera for better quality?
There is no universal quality winner established by the camera direction alone. Rear-camera specifications vary by iPhone model, and a specification such as megapixels does not by itself prove that the rear camera will make a better group selfie. Apple’s iPhone 17 technical specifications, for example, list an 18MP Center Stage front camera for that model; that figure does not apply to every iPhone or establish a controlled comparison with its rear camera.

Apple says the iPhone 17 front camera has a wider field of view and can expand and rotate the frame to include more people in a group selfie. Make the saved selfie match the preview
If you want the saved front-camera image to look as it did in the preview rather than reversed, turn on Mirror Front Camera in Camera settings. This changes how the front-camera image is saved; it does not improve framing or image quality. Apple’s selfie guide explains the setting.
