How to Make a Game Less Scary With Settings and Accessibility Options

There is no universal fear setting, but audio, motion, content, difficulty, and readability options can make some games more manageable.

You can often make a scary game less intense by changing its audio, motion, difficulty, or content-warning settings—but there is no universal “less scary” switch. Open the game’s Accessibility, Audio, Gameplay, or Content Warning menus and look for the controls that address what bothers you most. Options vary by game, platform, edition, and update.

Start with the kind of fear or discomfort you want to reduce

Before changing settings, identify the main trigger: sudden loud sounds, disturbing imagery, camera movement, time pressure, or difficulty following what is happening. Then look for a control that affects that element. A setting can reduce one source of intensity without changing the game’s story, themes, or other scares.

For an unfamiliar game, check its in-game menus first, then its official accessibility guide and storefront feature list. Steam displays developer-declared accessibility features on game store pages. PlayStation says accessibility tags can identify features for supported PS5 and PS4 games when browsing on a PS5 console. These listings can help you know what to look for, but the available options depend on the game and platform.

Use content warnings or scene controls when available

Some games provide advance warnings about potentially upsetting content, or let you obscure, skip, bypass, or limit selected scenes. These options are about giving players information and choice; they do not necessarily remove the material from the game. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 123 recommends helping players make informed decisions about content that may affect their well-being, while explicitly not asking developers to avoid or remove content.

  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)

  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

In its Dead Space accessibility feature, EA describes an optional warning and a scene-obscuring control. The obscuring effect hides visuals, but audio remains audible, so it is not a complete removal of the scene. Check the game’s own explanation before relying on a content control to block every part of an experience.

Lower intense sounds without losing all audio

If sudden noises or ominous sound design are the main problem, look for separate sliders for effects, music, ambience, or character and enemy sounds. Lowering one category can soften a particular cue while leaving dialogue or other useful audio easier to hear. If the game offers only a master volume control, reducing that level is an option, though it lowers everything together.

Controls are title-specific. Bandai Namco’s Little Nightmares III accessibility feature overview describes a Nighttime Mode that blunts loud spikes, along with separate volume controls for music, effects, antagonist cues, and friendly characters. That is an example of what one game offers, not a feature to expect in every horror game.

Reduce motion and controller feedback

Camera shake, camera bob, motion blur, and vibration can make an already tense scene feel more intense or uncomfortable. Check Accessibility, Camera, Display, or Controller settings for options to reduce or disable them. Steam’s accessibility feature guidance documents camera-comfort options, and Little Nightmares III’s publisher says the game includes camera shake and vibration controls.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Try changing one motion or feedback setting at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether it improves comfort without making movement or visual information harder to follow.

Adjust difficulty and pacing if pressure is the problem

If being chased, failing a quick-time event, or worrying about progress makes play stressful, check for difficulty choices, timing adjustments, easier quick-time events, or more flexible saving. Steam’s accessibility guidance includes examples such as adjustable difficulty, play-at-your-own-pace options, and saving at any time.

These options can reduce gameplay pressure, but they may not change frightening imagery, themes, or sound. A lower difficulty can make danger easier to manage without making a scene less disturbing.

Make information easier to follow

When confusion adds to fear, readability and cue settings may help. Look for larger text, subtitle size or background options, contrast controls, and visual alternatives to audio cues. Little Nightmares III’s publisher describes text and menu customization; Steam and PlayStation also list subtitles, audio, and visual accessibility feature categories. The exact controls depend on the title.

Clearer subtitles or cues can help you understand what is happening, but they do not necessarily reduce the game’s frightening content. Choose the changes that address your actual barrier rather than switching on every option at once.

If the settings are not enough

Accessibility options can lower specific sources of intensity, but they cannot guarantee that a game will feel comfortable for you. Pause, leave the scene, or stop playing if the remaining content is still too much. Choosing a different game is also a reasonable option; you do not need to finish a title that is not enjoyable.
