A timer can make it easier to pose. These controls affect different things; none is a universally best setting for every face or scene.
Camera controls and feature availability vary by iPhone model and iOS version. If a label or control below is missing, your device may not support it or may show a different Camera layout. Apple’s iPhone camera basics guide notes that not all features are available on all models.

Which selfie settings should you change?

There is no single exposure value or Photographic Style established as best for every selfie. Make a choice by looking at the preview and, where useful, comparing results on the same scene.
Choose whether the saved selfie should match the preview
Go to Settings > Camera > Mirror Front Camera. When this is on, the selfie captures the view as you see it in the front-camera frame instead of reversing it. It changes orientation, not lighting or camera detail. Apple describes the setting in its selfie instructions.

This is a preference rather than a quality upgrade. Take a test selfie and look at text, logos, or other details that are not symmetrical. Keep the setting on if you prefer the preview-matching result; turn it off if you prefer the reversed saved image.
Adjust the selfie framing before you take the photo
Widen the field of view when you need more in the frame
In the front-camera view, tap the selfie zoom control to increase the field of view, then tap again to return to the original view. A wider frame can help include more background or people; it does not mean that digital zoom itself improves image quality. Apple documents the control in its iPhone selfie guide.

Switch orientation when the composition calls for it
On supported iPhones, you can change the selfie frame between portrait and landscape. Use landscape when the group or scene is wider than it is tall, rather than trying to fit everyone into a tight portrait composition.

Apple lists Center Stage for photos on iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. When faces are detected, it can automatically zoom or rotate a group selfie. Apple says Auto Zoom is on and Auto Rotate is off on first use; manually changing zoom or rotation turns off the corresponding selected Center Stage settings. Correct focus or brightness when automatic exposure is not right
Tap to set the focus area and adjust exposure
Camera automatically sets focus and exposure, and Apple says face detection balances exposure across multiple faces. If the preview still looks too bright or dark, tap the part of the scene where you want focus, then drag the exposure control beside the focus area up or down. Use a modest change guided by the preview rather than aiming for a fixed number. Apple’s camera tools guide describes these controls.
Lock focus and exposure when you want them to stay put
Press and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears. This is useful when you have set the framing and do not want focus or exposure to shift while you get ready to capture. Release or change the lock when the scene or composition changes.

Preserve an exposure adjustment across Camera launches
If your iPhone offers the control, go to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings > Exposure Adjustment to retain the exposure adjustment when Camera is opened again. Without preservation, an adjustment made for one shot may not carry over to the next Camera launch. The exact available controls depend on the device and software version; Apple explains them in its Camera tools documentation.
Try a Photographic Style only if you like its look
On supported iPhones, open the Camera controls, choose Styles, and preview the available options. Depending on the model, you can adjust tone, color, or intensity. A style changes the overall color and tone treatment; it is not a focus or exposure correction, and Apple does not identify one style as universally flattering.

Compare a style with the default look on the same scene. If you prefer the neutral/default rendering, choose Standard. To keep a selected style on supported devices, use Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings > Photographic Style. Apple’s guide to iPhone camera tools covers Styles and preservation options.
Use the timer to pose without holding the phone
In Camera controls, choose a timer of 3, 5, or 10 seconds, then position the phone and get into the frame. A tripod is optional: the timer works as a built-in hands-free option when you can safely set the phone on a stable surface. Apple also says a selfie can be triggered with the shutter, either volume button, or Camera Control on supported models. See Apple’s selfie instructions and Camera tools guide.

- The saved photo looks reversed: decide whether you want preview-matching orientation and set Mirror Front Camera accordingly.
- The frame feels too tight: try the wider field-of-view control or, on a supported iPhone, landscape framing.
