Then refresh the connection, restart the phone, and check for a carrier settings update. If the line is absent or activation still fails, your carrier may need to activate or reprovision it. Before switching carriers, confirm that your iPhone is unlocked and that the new carrier supports eSIM for your exact model and location.
Start with the setup requirements
If you are activating or transferring an eSIM, connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or a personal hotspot. Some eSIM-only iPhone models in some countries and regions can activate without Wi-Fi, but availability depends on the model and location. You also need an active plan with a carrier that supports eSIM.

- If the line does not appear: the eSIM has not been added to the iPhone. Contact your carrier to set it up or transfer it; restarting will not install a missing line.
If this is a travel eSIM and the line is present but mobile data does not work, check whether data roaming needs to be enabled for that line.
Try these steps for No Service or Searching
Apple describes “No Service” or “Searching” in the status bar as a sign that the device is not connected to a mobile network. If the eSIM line is present and enabled, work through these checks:

On iOS 18 or later, the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics that may help identify the source of an eSIM setup problem.
When the checks do not restore service
Contact the carrier if the line remains absent, activation fails, or service does not return. Have the error message, phone number, carrier account password or PIN, and the iPhone’s IMEI or EID ready. The carrier can check whether the plan and eSIM are correctly provisioned and whether an account issue, outage, or other service restriction is involved.

Set up or transfer an eSIM
The available setup route depends on the carrier and device. Apple lists these possibilities:
- Carrier activation: the carrier assigns an eSIM to the iPhone as part of its activation process.
- Quick Transfer: move a number from a nearby iPhone when the carrier supports the feature. Once the number moves, it stops working on the previous iPhone.
- QR code: scan a code supplied by the carrier.
- Carrier app or link: use the carrier’s supported app or activation link.
- Manual details: enter eSIM information supplied by the carrier.
- Transfer from a non-Apple phone: ask the carrier how to move the number; the carrier may need to complete the transfer.
If an expected option is missing or setup does not complete, check with the carrier rather than repeatedly trying a different method. The carrier determines which activation and transfer methods it supports for your plan.

Before switching carriers
Check these points with the new carrier before starting the move:
- Unlock status: the iPhone must be unlocked for use with another carrier, unless both plans are from the same carrier.
- eSIM compatibility: ask whether the carrier supports eSIM for your exact iPhone model and the country or region where you will use it.
- Activation or transfer process: confirm whether the carrier will activate the eSIM, provide a QR code or link, support Quick Transfer, or require another method.
- Account and number details: verify any account requirements, number-transfer timing, plan terms, and local coverage directly with the carrier. These vary and are not established by Apple’s general setup instructions.
Do not assume that an eSIM can be moved between carriers simply by reusing its existing activation details. Follow the new carrier’s process for activating the plan or transferring the number.

When Dual SIM makes an eSIM look broken
Dual SIM requires supported plans and carrier service. The iPhone must be unlocked, or both plans must be from the same carrier. Confirm that both plans are set up, the carrier supports Dual SIM, coverage is available, and there is no outage or billing-related block. Enterprise plans may have additional restrictions.
An iPhone uses one cellular data network at a time. During a call on one line, the other line may show No Service. Wi-Fi Calling and Allow Cellular Data Switching can affect whether calls to the other number are received. This behavior alone does not establish that the eSIM is broken.
If you need a physical-SIM fallback
If your iPhone model has a SIM tray and your carrier offers a compatible physical SIM, ask the carrier whether switching to one is an option. Apple’s setup guidance describes removing the tray with a paper clip or SIM eject tool. A tool can help access the tray, but it cannot fix eSIM activation or carrier provisioning.
