Work through Apple’s reversible checks before assuming an iPhone speaker is damaged: turn off Silent mode and Do Not Disturb, remove anything that may cover the openings, inspect and gently clean them if needed, then compare the alert sound with a speakerphone call. If the problem began after the phone got wet, let it dry naturally before charging or connecting accessories.
Start with settings and possible obstructions
Apple treats crackling and static as distorted-sound symptoms, but its guidance does not identify one universal cause. Check these possibilities before seeking repair:

- Turn off Silent mode. Depending on your iPhone, check the Ring/Silent switch or the Action button and Control Centre setting.
- Turn off Do Not Disturb. Open Settings, tap Focus, and make sure Do Not Disturb is off.
- Remove anything that could cover an opening. Temporarily take off the case, film, or screen protector and test the sound again.
- Inspect the openings. Check the speaker and receiver openings for dirt or blockage. If necessary, clean gently with a clean, dry, small, soft-bristled brush, as Apple instructs. Do not insert objects or use liquids or compressed air.
These checks follow Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch distorted-sound troubleshooting guidance.
Test alerts, media, and calls separately
Try the Ringtone and Alerts slider
Open Settings, then tap Sounds or Sounds & Haptics. Move the Ringtone and Alerts slider back and forth. If there is no sound, or the speaker button beside the slider is dimmed, Apple says the device may need service.

Compare with a speakerphone call
If the alert test sounds normal, try a call with speakerphone. If crackling happens during calls, network conditions or reception could be involved rather than the speaker itself. Try again later or from another location. If the sound problem continues, Apple says service may be needed.
If the iPhone got wet
Water in a speaker or microphone opening can temporarily degrade performance until it evaporates. To check for water, place the iPhone speaker-side down on a lint-free cloth and see whether any water drips out.

- Unplug cables and do not charge the iPhone or connect accessories while it is wet.
- With the Lightning or USB-C connector facing down, gently tap the iPhone against your hand to help remove liquid.
- Leave it in a dry area with airflow. Cool air from a fan directed at the connector may help.
- Wait at least five hours before wired charging or connecting an accessory. Do not use an external heat source or insert anything into the connector.
Apple’s liquid-exposure guidance says water in a port may affect speaker or microphone performance until it completely evaporates. It also notes that splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent and may decrease with normal wear; liquid damage is not covered by Apple’s warranty, though consumer-law rights may apply.

Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if there is no sound, the speaker button is dimmed in the Ringtone and Alerts test, or crackling remains after the checks above and any necessary drying. Confirm service options and coverage for your device rather than attempting speculative part replacement.
