Choose the workspace where your draft and source material already live. Use ChatGPT for Word when you want an AI sidebar beside an open Word document; use ChatGPT Work with Google Docs when you want ChatGPT to create or edit a connected native document; use Notion when the writing depends on pages and project databases; and consider Gemini or Copilot when you want the AI features built into Docs or Word. Access depends on account, plan, connected-app permissions, licensing, and—at work—administrator settings.
How the workflows differ
The key difference is not a proven ranking of writing quality. It is where the AI operates and what material it can use. ChatGPT for Word works in a sidebar with the open document. ChatGPT Work can act on a connected Google Doc after you select it and approve the action. The documented Notion integration is oriented around searching and referencing pages and databases. Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot are separate, native options inside their respective editors.

This is a workflow map, not a benchmark. The available vendor documentation does not provide a like-for-like comparison of output quality, collaboration, export fidelity, equivalent privacy controls, or total prices.
Use ChatGPT in Microsoft Word
OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Word documentation describes an add-in sidebar for work on the open document. It can draft from notes or source text, summarize, revise selected text for a target audience, reorganize sections, adjust headings and formatting, and flag unclear language or inconsistent terminology.

Because the add-in does not automatically pull in other local files, provide the relevant source material in the document or prompt rather than assuming Word-side files are available. OpenAI cautions that complex formatting, tables, and charts may need manual adjustment, and generated changes may be mistaken or unintended. Review facts, figures, citations, and edits; save a copy before substantial changes.
OpenAI says ChatGPT for Word is available on all ChatGPT plans, including Free, subject to applicable plan limits and usage allowances. Its help page describes token-based pricing at the API rates for the model used. In managed organizations, Microsoft 365 administrators must allow the add-in. Chats in the add-in are separate from ChatGPT conversation history, and ChatGPT memory and skills do not carry over.

Create or edit a Google Doc with ChatGPT Work
To have ChatGPT Work act on a native Google document, connect the relevant Google Workspace app, ask Work to create or edit a document, select the account or file when prompted, approve the action, then review the result in Workspace. The action is not a blanket ability to edit every Drive file: availability varies with plan, workspace settings, file type, and surface, and administrators control which apps and actions are enabled.
OpenAI’s document workflow guidance also notes that creating a template does not change the original linked Google file. You must have access to linked files, and you should review the resulting document in Workspace.

Gemini is a separate native Docs option
Google’s April 22, 2026 announcement describes “Help me create” for formatted first drafts and “Help me write” for editing text in Docs. Google says Workspace Intelligence can draw context from Drive, Gmail, Chat, and the web. These are Google’s descriptions of its product; they do not mean every account has every capability, nor do they establish that Gemini and ChatGPT Work have identical permissions or behavior.
Use Notion when the knowledge base is the source
The OpenAI Notion integration page describes searching and referencing Notion pages, locating decisions and specifications, drafting meeting notes, FAQs, and status updates, and updating pages and database properties as work changes. That makes Notion a sensible fit when the source context is already maintained in team pages or project databases, rather than scattered across documents you would need to supply separately.

The integration page describes use cases, not an independent quality comparison with Docs or Word. What ChatGPT can access depends on the connected account and its permissions.

Microsoft’s Copilot in Word documentation describes drafting from a prompt, outline, notes, or referenced file; rewriting and refining selected text; summarizing a document or answering questions about it; and, where available, using files, email, and meetings for context. This is a native Word option, distinct from the ChatGPT sidebar.

Copilot requires an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription and/or Copilot license, and organization settings can affect which features appear. Microsoft’s separate Edit with Copilot in Word page describes in-place creation, editing, refinement, and formatting, and says rollout is for users with a Premium Copilot license. Check eligibility for your own account and organization before choosing this workflow.
Choose by where your writing context lives
- Your draft is already in Word: ChatGPT for Word is the documented ChatGPT sidebar workflow for drafting, summarizing, and revising the open document. Use Copilot instead if its native Word features are available under your license and settings.
- You want ChatGPT to make a native Google Doc: Use ChatGPT Work if the Workspace app is connected and your account and administrator settings permit the action. For AI tools inside Docs itself, check Gemini availability.
- Your team keeps decisions and specifications in Notion: Use the Notion connection when the task needs those pages or project database records as context.
- You need material beyond the open document: Check what the connected app can access and what permissions apply. Do not assume ChatGPT for Word can see other local files, or that any connected workflow can read files your account cannot access.
There is no supported basis here for declaring one option universally best or comparing their total prices. The practical decision is the editor you want to work in, the location of the source material, and the access your account and organization allow.
