iPhone Emergency SOS: Which Way to Call for Help?

Use the iPhone’s button controls to call emergency services, prepare Medical ID and contacts ahead of time, and learn when satellite SOS or Crash Detection may help.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To activate Emergency SOS on most iPhones, press and hold the side button and either volume button until the SOS sliders appear, then keep holding until the countdown ends. You can also enable a five-press shortcut in Settings > Emergency SOS. Set up Medical ID and emergency contacts in advance; outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, satellite SOS may be available on supported iPhones in supported regions.

Choose the right way to call for help

Emergency SOS has several activation paths, but they are not interchangeable in every situation. A manual button sequence starts an emergency call; Crash Detection can initiate a call automatically after a severe detected car crash; satellite SOS is a fallback for emergency communication when ordinary connectivity is unavailable and the feature is supported.

Route How it starts Connectivity and availability
Button hold Hold the side button and either volume button until the countdown ends. Places an emergency call using available service; satellite messaging may be offered if a call cannot connect and the device and region support it.
Five presses Enable “Call with 5 Presses” in Settings > Emergency SOS, then rapidly press the side button five times. Starts a countdown to an emergency call; requires prior setup.
Crash Detection On iPhone 14 or later, a severe detected car crash can trigger an alert and automatic call if not canceled. Automatic detection is not guaranteed to identify every crash; satellite fallback may be attempted when the person is unresponsive and outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, where available.
Emergency SOS via satellite Try to call emergency services first; if the call fails without cellular or Wi-Fi, follow the offered Emergency Text via Satellite flow. Requires iPhone 14 or later, regional availability, and a clear view of the sky for the satellite connection.

Activate Emergency SOS manually

Use the side and volume buttons

  1. Press and hold the side button and either volume button at the same time.
  2. When the SOS sliders appear, keep holding the buttons until the countdown ends and the iPhone places the call.
  3. If you prefer, drag the Emergency Call slider instead of waiting for the countdown.

On iPhones configured for the five-press shortcut, rapidly press the side button five times to start the countdown. Apple’s documented sequence for India differs: quickly press the side button three times. If Accessibility Shortcut is enabled there, use the side-and-volume-button sequence. Settings and available options can vary by region and iOS version; check Settings > Emergency SOS on your iPhone. Apple’s Emergency SOS instructions describe the current controls.

Call from the passcode screen

If the iPhone is locked, tap Emergency on the passcode screen and enter the local emergency number. Emergency services can also be texted only in some countries or regions; do not assume emergency texting is supported where you are.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

If you trigger a call accidentally

If the emergency call has already connected and you do not need help, do not hang up. Wait for the responder and explain what happened. This helps avoid leaving an emergency call unexplained.

Set up Medical ID and emergency contacts beforehand

In the Health app, create a Medical ID and add emergency contacts. Medical ID can make important health information available to responders, and Emergency SOS can alert the contacts you have configured. After a call, contacts receive a text unless you cancel the alert; if location is available, the iPhone can share it and send location-change updates for a limited period after SOS mode starts.

Apple’s Safety Features guidance explains the relationship between Emergency SOS, emergency contacts, and safety features.

Use satellite SOS when ordinary service is unavailable

Emergency SOS via satellite is documented for iPhone 14 or later, all models, but availability depends on country or region. First try calling emergency services. If cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable and the call does not go through, follow the iPhone’s on-screen Emergency Text via Satellite flow and answer its emergency questionnaire. Satellite SOS is for contacting emergency services; ordinary Messages via satellite is a separate feature.

  • Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
  • Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID

Improve the chance of a satellite connection

  • Move to a place with a clear view of the sky and horizon. Heavy foliage and other obstructions can prevent a connection.
  • Follow the on-screen direction prompts to orient the iPhone toward a satellite.
  • Before a remote trip, set up Medical ID and emergency contacts and try the satellite demo at Settings > Emergency SOS. The demo does not call emergency services.

Apple says a satellite emergency conversation can share questionnaire answers, location including elevation, and iPhone battery level. Medical ID and emergency-contact information can also be shared if configured. You can choose to share with emergency contacts the information sent to emergency services. Apple says location is shared with Apple and relay providers to route the emergency text and help responders reach you. See Apple’s satellite connection and availability guidance for current regional details.

If a satellite SOS session starts accidentally, do not end it. Wait for a responder to answer and explain that help is not needed.

Understand what Crash Detection does—and does not do

On iPhone 14 or later, Crash Detection can show an alert after a severe car crash. If you do not cancel, the iPhone automatically calls emergency services after 20 seconds. If you are unresponsive and outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, it will attempt Emergency SOS via satellite where that service is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Crash Detection is a separate automatic response, not a substitute for calling when you can do so. Apple warns that it cannot detect every car crash, and it does not override an emergency call already placed by another method. The 20-second timing and limitations are described in Apple’s Crash Detection and safety feature guidance.

Check compatibility and availability before relying on SOS

  • Check Settings > Emergency SOS for the activation choices available on your iPhone and region.
  • Confirm current satellite availability for your country or region; having a compatible iPhone alone does not guarantee service in every location.
  • For satellite SOS, plan for an unobstructed view of the sky and set up Medical ID and contacts before traveling beyond coverage.
  • Call the local emergency number when possible; use satellite emergency text only through the offered SOS flow when an ordinary call cannot connect.
