How to Choose an External Hard Drive for Mac Photos

Choose a dedicated drive for your active Photos library and a separate one for Time Machine. Apple’s format and capacity guidance helps you pick compatible storage.

The right external drive depends on what you want it to do. For a Photos library you open and edit, use a compatible drive dedicated to that library. For Time Machine, use a separate backup drive. Apple warns against storing a Photos library on a device used for Time Machine backups.

Choose the drive for its job

An external drive for Mac photos can serve as the home for your active Photos library, a Time Machine backup destination, or a separate archive. Those jobs have different requirements, and the active library and Time Machine backup should be on different devices.

  • Active Photos library: Choose storage with enough room for the library and expected growth, and keep it connected whenever you want to open that library in Photos.
  • Time Machine backup: Choose a separate, directly connected drive with room for backup history. Apple names USB and Thunderbolt as connection examples.
  • Photo archive: An archive is a separate copy of files, not a substitute for a current backup of your Mac or active library.

The available product evidence supports choosing by role and compatibility, not naming a defensible ranked list of current models. Check the drive’s capacity, connection, and intended use before buying; no current model performance tests, prices, or regional availability are established here.

What to look for in a drive for a Mac Photos library

Use a compatible format

Apple says an external device for a Photos library should be formatted as APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled). See Apple’s instructions for moving your Photos library to save space on your Mac.

Avoid removable media and backup disks

Apple cautions against putting a Photos library on removable media such as an SD card or USB flash drive, and says not to use a device that serves as a Time Machine backup. A conventional external hard drive or SSD may suit a working library if it meets the format and connection requirements. Keep it available when Photos needs to open the library.

Size for the library and growth

For a library-only drive, allow space for the current library plus the growth you expect. Apple does not publish a minimum capacity for an active Photos library in the cited instructions, so this is a practical sizing judgment rather than an Apple minimum.

What to look for in an external drive for Time Machine

Check the connection and format

Time Machine can back up to directly connected external storage; Apple gives USB and Thunderbolt as examples. For a new backup disk, Apple prefers APFS or APFS Encrypted. See Apple’s guidance on backing up a Mac with Time Machine.

Leave room for backup history

Apple’s July 6, 2026 Time Machine guidance says: “Use a storage device with at least twice the storage capacity of your Mac.” That recommendation applies to the Time Machine backup device, not to a drive used only for an active Photos library.

Back up the library, even if you use iCloud Photos

iCloud Photos is not a reason to skip a local backup. Apple says a local backup remains important and identifies Time Machine and manual copying as options. Keep a backup separate from the drive holding the active library.

Check for referenced files

Photos libraries may refer to originals stored outside the library, known as referenced files. Apple says those files are not automatically included when you back up the library. They also are not available through iCloud Photos; if their external location is disconnected, or the files are moved or renamed, Photos may no longer find them. Include those files in your backup plan as well. See Apple’s information about referenced files in Photos.

Set up an external Photos library

  1. Quit Photos, then connect the external drive to your Mac.
  2. Format the drive as APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if needed. Formatting erases the drive, so copy any files you want to keep elsewhere first.
  3. Move the Photos library to the external drive using Apple’s move-your-library instructions.
  4. If you use iCloud Photos, make the moved library the System Photo Library. Apple explains how in its Photos library guidance.
  5. Keep the drive connected when opening Photos with that library, and set up a separate local backup.

Buying checklist

  • Decide whether the drive will hold the active Photos library, Time Machine backups, or archived files.
  • Buy separate devices for an active Photos library and Time Machine backup.
  • For a library drive, confirm APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) compatibility and capacity for growth.
  • For a Time Machine drive, confirm direct connection to your Mac, APFS or APFS Encrypted support, and capacity of at least twice your Mac’s storage capacity, following Apple’s recommendation.
  • Confirm the connector works with your Mac’s available ports, and avoid removable media for the active library.
  • Include referenced originals stored outside Photos’ library in your backup plan.
