They are different device roles, not interchangeable tablets. As of October 4, 2026, Duo is announced but not yet available: Apple says preorders begin October 16 and availability begins October 23, 2026. Screen measurements are diagonal sizes, not a measurement of how much text fits on a page or how comfortable a screen is over a long session. The battery statements are Apple claims made for different devices, not results from a matched test.

Which is better for reading?
Choose iPhone Duo for a phone that opens into a larger reading canvas
Duo’s 7.6-inch inner display is larger than its 5.4-inch outer screen and gives the phone a more tablet-like surface when unfolded. Apple says the inner display’s nano-texture finish reduces glare. That may matter when choosing where you read, but it does not establish measured eye comfort or prove that glare is reduced in every lighting condition.

The iPad mini’s stated 8.3-inch diagonal is larger than Duo’s 7.6-inch inner display. Apple also lists True Tone, P3 wide color, and an antireflective coating. Those specifications make the mini the more straightforward choice if your priority is a compact tablet display, but diagonal size alone does not tell you how a book or webpage will lay out in a particular app.

Neither Apple product page establishes ebook page capacity, long-session reading comfort, or which device is easier to hold for extended reading. Treat those as personal-use questions rather than conclusions that follow from screen size.
Which fits travel and everyday carry?
Pick Duo if you want to consolidate a phone and a larger-screen device
Duo is a phone when closed and opens for a larger display. If you already carry an iPhone and want a single device for calls, messages, and occasional larger-screen reading, that hybrid role is its clearest travel advantage. Apple describes it as pocketable when closed. The available specifications do not establish how well it replaces a separate tablet in everyday use.

Pick iPad mini if you want to add a small tablet
The mini is a separate device, so it makes more sense if you are comfortable carrying both a phone and a tablet in exchange for a dedicated iPad experience. Apple says it fits in a backpack or purse. Neither source provides matched device-weight measurements, so a precise weight-based portability comparison is not established here.
Which is better for apps, multitasking, and handwriting?
Compare the operating systems and the apps you actually use, not just the screens. Apple describes Duo as adapting iOS 27 for its foldable design, including Split View and two windows of the same app. The iPad mini runs iPadOS, which Apple says supports multiple apps at once. These descriptions do not mean the two devices offer identical app layouts or workflows.

For handwriting or drawing, Apple lists iPad mini compatibility with both Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Duo’s announced Apple Pencil (USB-C) support is for later in 2026, so it should not be treated as available on October 4. A Pencil is optional for reading; its support matters most if note-taking or drawing is part of your tablet use.
What the battery claims do—and do not—tell you
Apple says Duo can provide up to 31 hours of video playback when using its inner display, and describes all-day battery life for both products. Those statements are not a head-to-head result from a shared test protocol. They do not establish which device lasts longer for your mix of reading, browsing, calls, and video.

On October 4, 2026, iPhone Duo was not yet purchasable according to Apple’s announced schedule: preorders begin October 16, with availability beginning October 23.
