The original 2023 Google Pixel Fold uses a synchronized, dual-axis hinge designed to move through 180 degrees and hold at intermediate angles. Its two OLED screens are built for different jobs: a 5.8-inch outer cover display for phone-style use and a 7.6-inch inner folding display for a larger workspace. The inner panel’s surface construction also differs from the cover screen’s glass.
How the Pixel Fold hinge moves
Google specifies a custom dual-axis, quad-cam synchronized hinge made from mirror-polished, multi-alloy steel. Its fluid friction is designed to work across the full 180-degree opening range, rather than making the phone behave only as an open-or-closed device. Google’s engineering account describes the mechanism as a custom-built 180-degree fluid-friction hinge; the Pixel hardware specifications identify its dual-axis, quad-cam construction.

That friction lets the phone stay at intermediate angles, including a partly folded, clamshell-like posture. Google presented tabletop use as one example of using the folded device as a prop. The practical idea is that the hinge can support more than one viewing position; the sources do not establish a quantified holding force or independent performance test.
Why the hinge sits at the ends
Google says it placed hinge components at the ends of the phone rather than beneath the display. In the company’s design explanation, that arrangement helps keep the unfolded profile thinner and leaves the display area unobstructed by hinge hardware. Google has not published an independent measurement of how much thickness this placement saves.

What the motion should feel like
Google’s designers say they tuned opening and closing torque to make the movement feel smooth and consistent. Industrial Designer Sangsoo Park described the design goal as recreating the way someone can hold and close a book with one hand. Product Manager George Hwang described a satisfying closing sound. These are the team’s subjective design descriptions, not measured claims about hinge performance.
How the two displays differ
The outer and inner panels are both OLEDs, but their sizes, shapes and protective surfaces are different. The specifications below are Google’s published figures for the original 2023 Pixel Fold, not independent measurements.

Google’s specification table and Pixel Fold One-Pager list the display details. Brightness figures retain their HDR and peak labels because they refer to different manufacturer-specified measures.

The inner panel folds, so its surface is specified as ultra-thin glass with a protective plastic layer. The outer display instead uses Gorilla Glass Victus cover glass. They are different constructions, not interchangeable surfaces. Use accessories explicitly made for the original 2023 Pixel Fold, and check whether a protector is intended for the cover display or the folding inner panel.

What the larger screen is for
Google positioned the cover screen for everyday phone tasks and the unfolded inner screen for a tablet-like viewing area. Its 2023 launch material highlighted split-screen multitasking and content viewing, as well as tabletop positioning enabled by the hinge. The experience of a particular app can depend on its support and on software changes since launch; Google’s launch description is not a guarantee that every app uses the full inner display in the same way today.

iFixit’s January 2024 repairability snapshot reported that Google’s customer-facing support site included a free service manual, original parts were available to end users, and calibration tools were offered at that time. It also identified the inner display and hinge as a costly combined replacement assembly. The assessment notes that repairs can involve carefully removing and reapplying adhesive around the outer display or back cover, and characterizes foldable repairs as more complex than conventional smartphone repairs.
Those repair details do not establish current parts availability, a repair price, a failure rate, or how long a particular phone will last. Google’s durability language at launch is not a substitute for independent testing, and the sources cited here do not provide a controlled durability comparison.
