How do their screens and portability compare?
Duo gives you a smaller screen in phone form, with the option to unfold for a larger view. iPad mini has a single, larger tablet display, but it is a separate device rather than a phone that folds away. The diagonals—5.4 and 7.6 inches for Duo, 8.3 inches for iPad mini—do not by themselves tell you how much usable content fits on screen. What software and multitasking do they offer?
iPhone Duo: iOS 27
Duo runs iOS 27, adapted for folded and unfolded use. Apple says Split View can place two apps side by side; users can also open two windows of the same app and save pairs of apps. These are announced features, not evidence that the multitasking experience matches iPadOS.

It is a less straightforward replacement if you specifically want iPadOS, iPad apps, or iPad mini’s listed Apple Pencil Pro support. Duo’s announced two-app Split View and saved app pairs may suit some multitasking, but Apple’s published feature descriptions do not establish equivalent app support or day-to-day tablet utility.

Apple lists iPad mini as supporting both Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple announced that iPhone Duo would support Apple Pencil (USB-C) later in 2026. Because that support was described as a later rollout, confirm that it is available in your region and with your device before buying a Pencil for Duo. The announcement does not list Apple Pencil Pro support for Duo.

What has Apple said about battery life?
Apple lists up to 31 hours of video playback on Duo’s inner screen under its specified preproduction-device test conditions. It also claims up to 44 hours using the outer display, or up to 24 hours of typical use when both displays are used equally. These are manufacturer test claims, not independently measured results; actual battery life varies with use.
