A USB-C-to-USB-A cable lets a USB-C device connect to an old PC’s existing USB-A port, but it does not add a USB-C socket to the computer. To install a physical USB-C port in a desktop, use a compatible PCIe expansion card—and check its specifications for speed, charging, and video support.
Choose the option that matches what you need
| What you want to do | What to use | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Connect a USB-C device to an existing USB-A port | A USB-C-to-USB-A cable | A connection through the PC’s existing USB-A port; it does not add a USB-C port. USB-IF’s USB Type-C cable specification defines these legacy-host cable assemblies. |
| Add a physical USB-C port to a desktop for data | A USB-C PCIe expansion card | A new port, subject to the card’s speed, slot, and power requirements. For example, StarTech’s PEXUSB312EIC specification describes a PCIe card with USB-C and USB-A ports. |
| Send video through USB-C | A card that specifically supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and has the required video input path | Video output only when the card and the connected graphics or motherboard output support the necessary path. A data-only USB-C card will not provide it. |
| Add USB Power Delivery or USB4 | A card whose specifications explicitly list the required capability | Charging or USB4 features only if the specific card and PC meet their requirements; the USB-C connector alone does not guarantee them. |
Using a USB-C device with an old USB-A port
If your goal is simply to connect a USB-C peripheral to a PC that already has USB-A, use a USB-C-to-USB-A cable designed for that host-and-device connection. It uses the port the computer already has. The USB-IF specification recognizes USB-C-to-Standard-A cable assemblies for connecting USB-C devices to legacy USB hosts.

This is a connection workaround, not a hardware upgrade: the PC still has no USB-C receptacle. The cable also does not give the USB-A port capabilities it did not already have.

Check the PCIe slot and card requirements
A PCIe USB-C expansion card is the relevant option for adding a port inside a desktop. Before buying, confirm the card fits an available PCIe slot in your PC and check whether it needs supplemental power. Then verify the data rate listed for the card; connector shape does not establish speed.
#1 Best Overall
- HIGH-PERFORMANCE USB CARD: Upgrade or expand a desktop/server's USB connectivity by adding four external USB Type-C 10Gbps ports and one internal USB Type-A 10Gbps port via a single PCI Express x4 connection
- FAST DATA TRANSFER: ASM3142 controller supports USB 3.2 transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps; Ideal for transferring large files or editing high-resolution photos/videos on external storage devices
- OPTIONAL POWER: USB PCIe expansion card with SATA power supplies additional power to the USB ports (when motherboard power is insufficient), providing up to 5V 3A (15W) per USB Type-C port and 5V 1.5A (7.5W) on the USB Type-A port
- COMPATIBILITY: Drivers auto-install in most OS's including Windows 8 & up, macOS, and Linux; Works with all hardware platforms such as Intel, AMD, and Apple Silicon that have a PCI Express x4/x8/x16 slot; Does not support DP-Alt Mode/USB Power Delivery
- THE IT PRO'S CHOICE: Designed and built for IT Professionals, this 5-port USB-C PCIe Card is backed for 2-years, including free lifetime 24/5 multi-lingual technical assistance
Manufacturer examples illustrate why the full specification matters. StarTech’s PEXUSB312EIC adds USB-C and USB-A ports, but its product page states: “The card does not support DP alt mode or USB Power Delivery.” It also does not support Thunderbolt devices. Treat it as a data-focused example, not a way to add video output, USB Power Delivery, or Thunderbolt.
Do not assume USB-C means video or fast charging
USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed feature set. Microsoft’s USB Type-C FAQ explains that DisplayPort Alt Mode can carry audio and video to DisplayPort displays over a USB connector. That capability must be supported by the card and its video path; a standard data-only card is not enough.

- HIGH PERFORMANCE: Add 2x USB-C SuperSpeed 10Gbps ports to your desktop PC with this USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 PCIe Card; Expansion card provides up to 5V 3A (15W) via the USB-C ports
- USB 3.2 GEN 2X1 SPEEDS: PCI Express card features the ASMedia ASM3142 host controller using x4 lanes of PCIe 3.0; Capable of speeds up to 10Gbps enabling fast access to high-performance devices like NVMe drives and SSDs
- MAXIMIZED USB PERFORMANCE: 2-port USB-C PCIe Card adapter supports USB Attached SCSI Protocol (UASP) optimizing USB performance; Installs in full/low-profile PCIe 3.0 x4 desktop / server slot (lower performance with PCI-e 2.0)
- COMPATIBILITY: Add-on card installs in full or low-profile (bracket included) PCIe 3.0 x4 slot (Backward compatible with PCIe 2.0); Windows/Linux/macOS with auto-install drivers Win 8 and up; Works with USB 3.2 Gen 2/3.0/2.0 devices
- COMPATIBILITY NOTICE: This dual port USB-C 10Gbps PCIe card supports data transfer only; It does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode for video output, USB Power Delivery, or Thunderbolt devices
Power Delivery is another separate capability. Check the card’s specification for explicit USB Power Delivery support and the power it can provide. Do not infer charging capability from the presence of a USB-C port.

Video output through USB-C
For native video over USB-C, look specifically for DisplayPort Alt Mode and verify how the card receives a DisplayPort signal. A relevant card may require a cable from the graphics card or motherboard DisplayPort output to an input on the USB-C card. Without that path, the USB-C connector alone does not create a video signal.

USB4 and platform requirements
Higher-capability USB4 cards can require more than an open slot. MSI’s USB4 expansion card specification calls for a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface. MSI also says display output requires connecting a graphics-card or motherboard DisplayPort output to the card’s DisplayPort input. Check the card’s precise interface and connection requirements against your motherboard and graphics setup before choosing it.

- Only need to connect a USB-C device? Use a compatible USB-C-to-USB-A cable with an existing USB-A host port.
- Need a USB-C socket for data on a desktop? Look at PCIe USB-C cards and confirm the slot, data rate, and supplemental power needs.
- Need display output? Require explicit DisplayPort Alt Mode support and confirm the specified video input path.
- Need charging or USB4? Verify those capabilities and any platform requirements in the exact card specification.
Product specifications establish what a particular card claims to support; they do not establish compatibility with every older motherboard. Confirm fit and requirements for your PC before purchasing.
