Apple announced it in September 2026; pre-orders start October 16 and sales begin October 23.
What iPhone Duo is—and when you can buy it
iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone. Closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. Opened, the inner display measures 7.6 inches—Apple says that is 50 percent more screen area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The outer panel provides 90 percent of the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area, so the large-screen benefit requires physically opening the phone.

The phone uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip, dual batteries, a vapor chamber, titanium construction, a precision hinge and Touch ID in the side button. iOS 27 adds features designed for the two-display layout. Apple CEO John Ternus described Duo as “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,” emphasizing the company’s hardware-and-software approach.

- [Compatible with iPhone Duo] This Phone Case Only Compatible with iPhone Duo case 7.6 inch.
- [Skin-Friendly] The back of the case is crafted with a skin-touch matte finish, which feels smooth and non-slip in your hand. Unlike glossy surfaces that attract fingerprints and smudges, this matte texture stays clean with minimal wiping, while its soft tactile sensation enhances holding comfort for long periods.
- [Magnetic Craft] The built-in magnetic ring can strengthen the magnetic absorption, empowering the case to be compatible with wireless charger, magnetic car mount, magnetic battery bank, magnetic wallet, and most MagSafe accessories. The perfectly aligned magnets enable wireless charging faster and safer than ever. Wireless charge on with the case on.
- [Shock Protection] Withstanding the rigorous 10-foot military-grade drop test, it builds a solid defense for your device, and can easily resist the damage caused by violent impacts and accidental drops.
- [Precise Cutout] Precise cutout fits the volume buttons, side button, and curves of your device without adding bulk. It is a more lightweight case with a firm and comfortable grip.
The price premium is substantial
What the $1,999 buys
The 256GB iPhone Duo starts at $1,999. At equivalent storage, MacRumors reports that this is $800 more than iPhone 18 Pro and $700 more than iPhone 18 Pro Max. A 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max is listed at $1,899—still below Duo’s entry price.
The foldable display is the central reason for the premium. That makes your usage pattern important: if you regularly read, edit documents or run two apps side by side, the larger panel may justify the cost. If you mostly use the phone closed, you are paying for a capability that stays folded much of the time.
| Comparison | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | $1,999 | 256GB starting price |
| Duo versus iPhone 18 Pro | $800 more | MacRumors comparison at equivalent storage |
| Duo versus iPhone 18 Pro Max | $700 more | MacRumors comparison at equivalent storage |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | $1,899 | 1TB listing reported by MacRumors |
You carry a wider, thicker, heavier phone
MacRumors lists the closed Duo at 84.1mm wide, 11.3mm thick and 254 grams. Tom’s Guide describes its hands-on weight as 8.9 ounces and calls it the heaviest iPhone Apple has made. It is 43 grams heavier than iPhone 18 Pro and five grams heavier than iPhone 18 Pro Max.
| Model | Closed or standard display | Duo difference |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | 5.4-inch outer display; 7.6-inch inner display when opened | 84.1mm wide, 11.3mm thick, 254g |
| iPhone 18 Pro | 6.3-inch display | Duo is 43g heavier; exact dimensions not stated here |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | 6.9-inch display | Duo is 5g heavier; exact dimensions not stated here |
That creates an unusual compromise. Closed, Duo gives you less screen than either conventional Pro model while taking up more width and weight in a pocket or hand. To get the tablet-like workspace, you must open it, which also makes one-handed use impossible on the inner display.

- [N52 magnet - for Magsafe accessories compatibility] N52 magnets provide reliable magnetic force with proven, everyday durability. Industry-standard N52 magnets deliver a consistently strong connection, keeping chargers, car mounts, and magnetic accessories securely in place.
- [Full Hinge Protection] Front and rear panels are connected through an integrated PC hinge guard — no loose panels. Unlike standard Fold cases that separate and loosen over time, this design stays securely connected.
- [Slim & Protective] Dual-layer construction fully covers the device, delivering drop protection in a slim profile that adds minimal bulk to the phone. Built for those who want the phone protected.
- [Drop & Camera Protection] Spigen's Air-cushion technology in the corners of the case absorb the impact of everyday drops, and raised edges around the camera keep the lenses elevated off flat surfaces, helping protect against scratches and everyday damage.
- [Compatible with MagSafe Accessories and Fast Wireless Charging] Spigen Tough Armor Pro MagFit for iPhone Duo
Face ID and the Action button disappear
Touch ID replaces Face ID
Duo puts Touch ID in the side button instead of using Face ID. Unlocking, authentication and Apple Pay confirmation therefore follow a different routine from recent Pro iPhones. Whether that feels faster or slower depends on how you hold the phone and whether your finger naturally reaches the side button.
The customizable Action button is gone
The Action button used for Silent mode, the flashlight, Focus modes and Shortcuts is not included. Camera Control remains, but users who built daily routines around the Action button must move those actions elsewhere in iOS 27.
The foldable screen adds maintenance concerns
Apple uses a nano-texture finish to reduce reflections and make the crease less obvious. MacRumors reports that the crease is still visible in certain lighting. The inner panel has a polymer cover layer that can be replaced separately when it wears or is damaged.
In the United States, MacRumors lists cover-layer replacement at $49 without AppleCare+ or $19 with coverage. Conventional Pro models do not have this additional foldable-specific service item.

Battery life depends heavily on which screen you use
Apple’s typical-use rating for Duo is up to 24 hours, matching iPhone 18 Pro but trailing iPhone 18 Pro Max’s 30 hours. Video results vary sharply between the inner and outer displays.
| Use case | iPhone Duo | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Up to 24 hours | Up to 24 hours | Up to 30 hours |
| Video playback, inner display | Up to 31 hours | Not stated | Up to 45 hours |
| Video playback, outer display | Up to 44 hours | Not stated | Not stated |
| Streaming, inner display | Up to 26 hours | Not stated | Up to 40 hours |
| Streaming, outer display | Up to 37 hours | Not stated | Not stated |
Wired charging to 50 percent takes around 20 minutes on Duo, compared with around 15 minutes for the Pro models. The outer-screen figures show why endurance cannot be judged from the headline rating alone: keeping the phone closed can last longer than using the large inner panel.
The camera sacrifices zoom and professional workflows
Less reach for distant subjects
Duo does not have the Pro models’ dedicated 48-megapixel 4x telephoto camera or their 8x optical-quality crop. Its longest optical-quality option is a 2x crop from the main camera. Photo zoom tops out at 10x digital zoom instead of 40x, and video zoom at 6x instead of 24x. TechRadar also identifies the missing telephoto camera as a major caveat.

Important formats and controls are missing
| Capability | iPhone Duo | iPhone 18 Pro/Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated telephoto | No; 2x crop from main camera | 48MP 4x telephoto and 8x optical-quality crop |
| Maximum photo zoom | 10x digital | 40x |
| Maximum video zoom | 6x | 24x |
| Outer front camera | 12MP | 18MP |
| Variable aperture and LiDAR | Not included | Available on Pro models |
| ProRAW, spatial photo/video, ProRes and ProRes RAW | Not supported | Supported by Pro models |
| Apple Log 2, ACES and genlock | Not supported | Supported by Pro models |
Duo also lacks the Pro models’ full aperture, shutter-speed, white-balance and histogram controls, as well as Apple’s signed reference-image capture. For creators who depend on long zoom, log footage, multicamera synchronization, ProRes or professional color pipelines, these are workflow limitations rather than minor specification differences.

eSIM-only use can complicate travel
iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. In markets including the United Kingdom and Australia, iPhone 18 Pro models retain a nano-SIM slot. Before buying Duo, confirm that your carrier supports eSIM activation and that your travel destinations can provide the service. Swapping a physical SIM between phones is not an option.
iOS 27 is designed for two screens, but apps may lag behind
Apple’s software includes Split View, two windows of the same app, paired apps and continuity between folded and open states. Apple demonstrated multitasking with apps including Netflix and Slack.
Tom’s Guide cautions that Apple and a limited group of developers have optimized for the new displays, while many other apps may initially appear as enlarged phone layouts. That means the hardware’s productivity promise depends partly on third-party updates. Broad app compatibility was not established in the pre-release coverage, so buyers should expect an uneven launch experience rather than assuming every app will use the full 7.6-inch panel.

Durability and long-term comfort remain unknowns
Apple says Duo uses grade 5 titanium, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and a precision hinge. Those are construction details, not proof of multi-year hinge or inner-screen reliability. Tom’s Guide notes that foldable durability remains a significant unknown and that extended use was needed to judge comfort; its hands-on report also says Duo is heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Ownership costs are higher if something goes wrong
Protection-plan pricing
| Cost | iPhone Duo | iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, monthly | $19.99 | $14.99 |
| AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, annual | $199.99 | $149.99 |
| Accidental inner-display damage with AppleCare+ | $99 service fee | Not applicable; screen-only Pro damage is $29 |
U.S. out-of-warranty estimates
- Inner-display damage: $999.
- Other damage: $1,499.
- Back-glass repair: $199.
- Battery service: $229.
Those figures make a protective foldable case and a realistic protection plan part of the buying decision, not optional afterthoughts. Apple confirms compatible MagSafe cases, but accessory compatibility and pricing should be checked for the exact model before purchase.
Who should choose Duo?
Duo makes sense when
- You will regularly use the 7.6-inch display for two-app multitasking, reading, editing or other work that benefits from extra space.
- You accept Touch ID, a missing Action button and a wider, heavier closed phone.
- Your photography is mostly main-camera shooting and you do not need long telephoto reach or Pro video formats.
- Your carrier supports eSIM and you are prepared for higher protection and repair costs.
A conventional Pro is the safer choice when
- You want a larger screen immediately without opening the phone; Pro Max’s 6.9-inch display is already bigger than Duo’s closed 5.4-inch panel.
- Battery endurance, especially video playback, matters more than foldable multitasking.
- You rely on a 4x telephoto camera, 40x photo zoom, 24x video zoom, LiDAR, ProRes, ProRAW, spatial media, log capture or genlock.
- You prefer Face ID, the Action button, a physical SIM option in supported markets or lower repair exposure.
iPhone Duo is a first-generation form-factor decision: you are buying the 7.6-inch workspace and accepting the cost of carrying, operating and repairing a foldable. If that workspace is central to how you use a phone, the compromises may be worthwhile. If it is an occasional novelty, iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max preserves more familiar controls, camera capability and ownership headroom for less money.
