Apple does document a subtler point: the sensor frames used to make a photo can differ from the frame you saw when you tapped the shutter. That distinction matters for moving subjects, but it is not proof that the camera “lies” by a fixed amount.
Does an iPhone take the picture at the instant I tap the shutter?
Not necessarily in the sense of using the exact viewfinder frame visible at touch-down. Apple camera software engineer Devin Lane defines shutter lag as the delay between requesting a capture and reading out one or more sensor frames that will be fused into the photo. In Apple’s WWDC23 example, capture can begin gathering frames after the viewfinder frame visible at the tap, so an action such as a skateboarder’s movement may have progressed by the time the photo’s frames are read out. That explains why the resulting image may not match the precise moment you thought you selected. It does not establish a single delay duration, nor does it show that every iPhone, iOS version, Camera mode, or lighting condition behaves identically.

What does “a tenth of a second” actually mean here?
Apple’s session uses a viewfinder cadence of 30 frames per second: each displayed frame is visible for about 33 milliseconds. That is an illustration of how quickly motion can change between viewfinder frames—not a measurement of total preview latency or the time from shutter tap to sensor capture. The sources do not establish a universal 100-millisecond delay for the stock iOS Camera app.

They also do not establish that users generally failed to notice a delay. Those claims should not be treated as measured facts. To substantiate them would require a defined iPhone and iOS version, Camera mode, lighting and motion conditions, plus a measurement method that separates preview display from capture timing.
Why “camera delay” can mean several different things
There is no single timing number that captures every part of taking a photo. Apple describes three phases: capturing sensor frames, processing those frames into an uncompressed image, and encoding the result as HEIC or JPEG. The frame shown in the live preview, the sensor frames used for the photo, the processing time, and the moment the finished file becomes available are different events.

- Preview latency: how current the live image on screen is relative to what the camera is seeing. Apple discusses latency in a video-stabilization context, where stabilization can delay the video pipeline and make preview timing harder. That is not a still-photo shutter-lag measurement. Apple’s WWDC22 session covers the video example.
- Shutter lag: the interval from the capture request to reading out the sensor frames used to make the photo.
- Processing and encoding: work performed after the sensor frames have been captured, before the final image is ready.
- Shot-to-shot time: how soon the camera can handle another capture request, which can be affected by processing and memory use.
A delay in one stage should not be presented as a measurement of another. In particular, a delayed preview, a slower finished-file handoff, and shutter lag are not interchangeable explanations for a photo that seems late.
How Zero Shutter Lag changes frame selection
Zero Shutter Lag (ZSL) uses a rolling buffer of earlier frames. In supported AVFoundation capture configurations, the camera can draw on buffered frames around the tap moment rather than relying only on frames gathered after the request. Apple says apps linked on or after iOS 17 can have ZSL enabled for specified session presets and device formats that support highest photo quality. Apple’s developer session describes the configuration and behavior.

This is developer guidance, not a guarantee that every stock Camera mode on every iPhone uses the same frame-selection behavior. Apple lists exceptions to ZSL, including flash capture, manual exposure, bracketed captures, and delivery of constituent photos from synchronized multi-camera capture. Whether ZSL applies therefore depends on the capture configuration.

Apple’s responsive-capture approach allows a new capture request to begin while an earlier photo is still being processed. That can help with back-to-back shots, but overlapping work increases peak memory use. The time between shots is therefore not a direct measure of shutter lag for any one photo.

“Prioritize Faster Shooting”
Apple calls the Camera app setting Prioritize Faster Shooting and says it is on by default in Camera.app. During rapid shooting, the behavior can adapt image quality from the highest setting to a balanced setting to maintain shot-to-shot time. Apple says the option is off by default for third-party apps because it can affect image quality. Apple explains the trade-off in its WWDC23 session.

Deferred processing can make a proxy image available before the final photo has completed processing. This can reduce the wait between shots while the final image is still pending; it does not show that the sensor captured the photo faster. Apple’s WWDC23 session identifies this described feature as available beginning with iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, and newer devices.

What Apple’s camera documentation does—and does not—show
Apple’s materials support the distinction between the visible preview and the frames used to produce a photo, and explain how buffering and processing affect capture behavior. They do not provide a universal 100-millisecond benchmark for the stock Camera app or evidence for the claim that users generally did not notice a delay.
Apple also documents startup responsiveness separately: a camera app can show a preview while its capture session finishes setting up other outputs using deferred start. That is a way to improve launch responsiveness, not a measurement of shutter lag. Apple’s responsive-camera-app documentation describes this design.
