iPhone 80% Charge Limit vs. Optimized Battery Charging: Which Should You Choose?

Use an 80% cap for a predictable limit if you have charge to spare; choose 100% with Optimized Battery Charging if you want a full phone near your usual unplug time.

Choose an 80% Charge Limit if you use an iPhone 15 or later, usually have charge to spare, and prefer a predictable routine cap. Choose a 100% limit with Optimized Battery Charging if you want a full charge near your usual unplug time and your charging routine is consistent. Neither setting is universally best, and Apple does not publish a quantified head-to-head estimate of how much longer one preserves battery capacity.

How the two charging options differ

What matters 80% Charge Limit 100% limit with Optimized Battery Charging
Routine behavior Charging stops near the selected cap. You can choose a limit from 80% to 100% in 5% increments. When the phone predicts it will stay connected for an extended period, it delays charging past 80% and aims to finish near your usual unplug time.
Charge at unplugging Usually less than a full charge, so you have less stored charge available for the day. Aims to have the phone fully charged when you disconnect it, if the learned routine prediction applies.
Predictability The cap is more predictable, though the phone may occasionally charge to 100% to keep its battery-level estimate accurate. Depends on learned habits, location, and whether the phone predicts a long charging period.
Best fit People who have enough charge for the day and prefer routine charging to stop near a chosen limit. People who want a full charge near their usual start to the day and often charge on a stable schedule.
Availability iPhone 15 and later. iPhone 15 and later when the Charge Limit is set to 100%; iPhone 14 and earlier offer Optimized Battery Charging without the adjustable limit.

Apple describes Optimized Battery Charging as designed to reduce wear by reducing the time an iPhone spends fully charged. That describes the feature’s intent; Apple’s guidance does not establish a specific lifespan advantage for either option over the other. Which setting should you choose?

Choose 80% if a cap fits your day

An 80% limit is a practical choice if your iPhone 15 or later usually finishes the day with charge left and you value a predictable cap more than maximum daily capacity. If 80% leaves too little margin, try an intermediate limit: Apple allows settings from 80% to 100% in five-point steps.

Choose 100% with optimization if you want a full charge

Use a 100% limit with Optimized Battery Charging if you want a full charge near your usual unplug time and your charging times and locations are reasonably consistent. The feature is predictive, not a fixed overnight hold at 80%: it delays charging past 80% only in situations where the phone predicts a long connection and a familiar routine.

How to set the charge option

iPhone 15 and later: select a Charge Limit

  1. Open Settings → Battery → Charging.
  2. Select a limit between 80% and 100% in 5% increments. Choose 100% if you want to use Optimized Battery Charging.

With a limit below 100%, the phone charges to within a few percentage points of the selected limit and stops. If its battery level drops more than five percentage points while it remains connected to power, charging resumes toward the limit. Apple says a phone with a limit below 100% may still occasionally charge to 100% to maintain accurate state-of-charge estimates. Apple iPhone User Guide: Set a charge limit on iPhone

iPhone 14 and earlier: turn optimization on or off

  1. Open Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging.
  2. Turn Optimized Battery Charging on or off.

It may not activate before those conditions are met, or when your routine or location is unfamiliar. Apple Support: About Charge Limit and Optimised Battery Charging on iPhone

What these settings can—and cannot—tell you about battery health

Battery aging depends on several factors, including temperature history and charging pattern. As a rechargeable lithium-ion battery chemically ages, its charge capacity diminishes, which can reduce battery life and peak performance. Apple’s published feature guidance explains how the settings behave but does not quantify how many months, years, or percentage points of capacity an 80% limit saves compared with 100% and Optimized Battery Charging.

Heat is a separate factor worth managing whichever setting you choose. Apple recommends an ambient operating temperature of 16°C to 22°C (62°F to 72°F) and advises against using or charging iPhone in ambient temperatures above 35°C (95°F), which can permanently reduce battery lifespan.
