The iPhone 18 Pro is a measured update over the iPhone 17 Pro, not a complete redesign on the specifications Apple lists. It moves from A19 Pro to A20 Pro, adds variable aperture to the Main camera and carries a higher Apple-rated video-playback estimate. Both have 6.3-inch displays and 48MP Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras, so the practical case for switching depends on whether those changes matter to you—and what an upgrade would cost after trade-in or resale.
iPhone 18 Pro vs. iPhone 17 Pro: the key differences
Apple’s comparison and iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications list these headline differences and shared features. The playback figures are Apple estimates, not independent test results.

What the chip change does—and doesn’t—tell you
The generation change is straightforward: A20 Pro replaces A19 Pro. Apple’s published comparison establishes the chip names, but the available specifications do not quantify a speed advantage. The model name alone cannot tell you how much faster apps will open, games will run or demanding tasks will finish.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
To judge real-world performance, look for independent tests that compare both phones under matched conditions, including sustained workloads rather than a brief peak-speed test. No such results are established by Apple’s specifications.
Display: the same listed size, not a stated size upgrade
Both models are listed with 6.3-inch displays, so the published comparison does not show a larger screen on the 18 Pro. Apple lists the 18 Pro display as OLED, with a 2622-by-1206 resolution, 460 pixels per inch and ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz. Those are specifications for the newer model; they do not, by themselves, establish a visible improvement over the 17 Pro.

Camera: variable aperture is the distinctive listed change
Apple lists 48MP Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras on both phones. For the iPhone 18 Pro, the company identifies the system as 48MP Pro Fusion and specifies variable aperture on the Main camera. That gives the newer model a listed camera control that is not identified for the 17 Pro in the comparison.
A specification does not establish how much better a photo will look. Image quality depends on the scene and settings as well as the camera hardware; deciding whether this change matters requires independent comparisons of photos and video in situations you care about, such as low light, moving subjects or bright daylight.
Rank #3
- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
Battery: Apple estimates up to three more hours of video playback
Apple lists up to 36 hours of video playback for iPhone 18 Pro and up to 33 hours for iPhone 17 Pro. These are manufacturer estimates from controlled testing, not a promise of everyday battery life. Your results can vary with usage and conditions, and the figures do not establish how the phones compare under a matched, mixed-use routine.
Storage and what comes in the box
Apple lists iPhone 18 Pro capacities of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. Choose based on the space you need for apps, photos, video and offline downloads; storage choice can also affect the price you pay, so compare the same capacity when calculating an upgrade.

The iPhone 18 Pro box includes a 1-meter USB-C charge cable but no power adapter or EarPods. Apple says: “As part of our efforts to reach carbon neutrality by 2030, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max do not include a power adapter or EarPods.” If you need an adapter, check whether one you already own is compatible before buying another.

There is no universal value verdict without your local price and the amount you would recover by trading in or selling your current phone. Compare the cost of moving to the same storage tier, subtract your actual trade-in or resale value, and weigh that net cost against the specific changes you would use.

- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
- Consider upgrading if variable aperture on the Main camera, the newer chip generation or Apple’s higher playback estimate addresses a real need for you, and the net cost makes sense.
- Consider keeping the 17 Pro if its 6.3-inch display and 48MP triple-camera setup already serve you well, or if the newer model’s listed changes do not justify your out-of-pocket cost.
- Wait for independent comparisons if your decision depends on actual speed, image quality or battery endurance. Apple’s specification pages do not settle those real-world questions.
Apple’s retrieved comparison page did not provide usable current prices. Check the price in your country for the specific storage tier and date you plan to buy; do not assume a US price or trade-in value applies elsewhere.
