Upgrade if you will use the 18 Pro’s new camera controls, want its newest Apple Intelligence and Siri features, or your 15 Pro’s battery or speed is genuinely holding you back. Otherwise, check the net cost first and consider waiting. The iPhone 15 Pro, launched in 2023, already has a 48MP main camera, a 3x telephoto, the Action button, the A17 Pro chip and USB 3 transfer speeds. Apple’s own claims about the 18 Pro’s gains are not backed here by independent side-by-side tests, so this guide separates what is confirmed from what is marketing.
What is confirmed about each phone
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro on September 9, 2026, and said it became available September 18, 2026 (Apple Newsroom). The iPhone 15 Pro was announced on September 12, 2023 (Apple Newsroom).

Camera: the clearest reason to upgrade
What the 18 Pro adds
Apple says the 18 Pro’s variable aperture and manual controls let you adjust aperture, shutter speed and white balance, and view a histogram. These matter if you want to shape depth of field and exposure yourself. If you mostly point and shoot, the 15 Pro’s 48MP sensor and 3x telephoto already cover the essentials.

Performance and battery: claims, not measurements
Apple’s launch materials credit the A20 Pro and a new vapor chamber with better performance, and promote a battery improvement. No controlled 15 Pro-versus-18 Pro runtime or benchmark was available, so no speed or hours-of-battery figure can be responsibly quoted. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said: “With iPhone 18 Pro, we’ve made advancements to the areas our users care about most: camera, performance, battery, and intelligence.” That is a vendor statement.
A practical point follows from this. A three-year-old battery is often the real problem, not the chip. If your 15 Pro is fast enough but drains too quickly, check its battery health in Settings and compare the cost of a battery service with the cost of a new phone.

The 18 Pro launches with iOS 27, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Features and services vary by country and language, so check Apple’s feature availability page for your region before counting a specific AI capability as a reason to buy.

Size and feel
The 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch display and weighs 211 g, against the 15 Pro’s 6.1 inches. Expect a slightly larger phone. Hold one in a store if you like compact phones.
Cost: the deciding variable
Apple’s compare page was the place to check prices, but no usable price figures were available from it, so none are quoted here. Work out your own number:
- Note the checkout price of the storage tier you need in your country.
- Get a written trade-in quote for your exact 15 Pro condition from Apple, your carrier or a retailer. Do not assume a figure.
- Subtract the quote, then compare the net cost against keeping the phone or replacing only the battery.
- Check plan terms, device-condition requirements and any lock-in tied to carrier offers.

Camera enthusiasts and creators
Upgrade is justified if you will actually use aperture, shutter and white balance controls and the histogram.
