The early verdict is two-sided: the iPhone 18 Pro looks like a strong premium phone, with a variable-aperture main camera, improved endurance and a new chip among its clearest advances. But reviewers describe the year-over-year changes as incremental, so owners of recent Pro models may find little reason to upgrade. Whether it feels “meh” depends on what you use now—and whether the new camera or battery solves a problem you actually have.
What reviewers mean by “excellent yet meh”
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on September 9, 2026; review coverage lists September 18 as the on-sale date. The early assessments point to a capable premium phone, not a bad one. MacRumors characterizes the generation’s improvements as incremental overall, centered on cameras, battery and performance, while Ars Technica says relatively little has changed from the iPhone 17 Pro. MacRumors’ review roundup and Ars Technica’s review support the “meh” part chiefly for people already using a recent Pro.

That distinction matters: “excellent” describes the phone’s overall capability; “meh” describes how much its changes may matter to a particular owner. The most useful question is not whether it is good in the abstract, but whether its camera, battery, size or performance is meaningfully better for your needs at your actual upgrade cost.
What is genuinely new?
Variable aperture is the standout camera change
The 48MP Fusion main camera adds variable aperture. Apple presents the feature as a way to gain more creative control and improve low-light photography. Ars Technica welcomes the variable aperture and additional camera controls for people who want more granular control, while noting that much else has not changed from the previous Pro generation. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro page describes the product features; the creative-control assessment is Ars Technica’s.

The practical appeal is greatest if you deliberately manage light and depth of field rather than simply point and shoot. If you rarely adjust camera settings and are happy with your current phone’s photos, this feature alone may not justify an upgrade. The early coverage establishes a new control and Apple’s low-light positioning; it does not establish that every user will see a dramatic improvement in every photo.
A20 Pro and cooling: useful advances, with claims to keep in perspective
Apple markets the A20 Pro chip and a next-generation vapor chamber as performance improvements. After a week with both sizes, 9to5Mac’s Chance Miller described the new generation as faster, heavier, longer-lasting and more capable. That is a reviewer’s overall impression, not a quantified independent performance result. Read 9to5Mac’s review.

Does the battery really last longer?
It depends on which test you mean. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max provides up to 45 hours of video playback — Apple, 2026, a manufacturer claim based on Apple’s testing. Apple says that is six hours more than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. It is not a prediction of how long every person’s phone will last in mixed daily use. Apple’s product page and technical specifications provide the company’s figures and testing qualifications.
A separate result comes from Tom’s Guide’s battery test, reported by MacRumors: 18 hours 27 minutes for iPhone 18 Pro Max in Tom’s Guide’s battery test — Tom’s Guide, 2026. In that same test, the iPhone 17 Pro Max lasted 17 hours 54 minutes, while the smaller iPhone 18 Pro lasted 16 hours 17 minutes. The Pro Max’s gain over its predecessor in that test was about 33 minutes. These independent test results and Apple’s video-playback maximum use different methods, so they should not be treated as directly comparable measurements. MacRumors reports the Tom’s Guide results.

For buyers choosing between the sizes, the cited evidence favors Pro Max if battery life is the priority; the smaller Pro is the more compact option. Consider the larger phone’s size and weight alongside its battery advantage rather than choosing by a single number.
How good is the display?
Tom’s Guide measured peak brightness on the iPhone 18 Pro Max at 2,326 nits at a 25% window on iPhone 18 Pro Max — Tom’s Guide, 2026, and 1,762 nits at a 10% window. For the iPhone 18 Pro, its corresponding measurements were 2,314 nits at a 25% window and 1,627 nits at a 10% window. These are lab measurements tied to the reviewer’s stated test method and window sizes, not a single brightness figure guaranteed in every viewing condition. Tom’s Guide’s review provides the test context.

Which iPhone 18 Pro should you choose?
- Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if battery life is your leading concern and you are comfortable with the larger size. Apple’s playback claim and the cited Tom’s Guide test both favor the Max for endurance.
- Choose the iPhone 18 Pro if you want a more compact Pro and do not need the Max’s additional endurance. Its battery-test result is lower, but the right trade-off depends on your daily use.
- Keep your current Pro if its camera and battery still meet your needs and the new variable-aperture control or endurance improvement would not change how you use it.
- Consider upgrading from an older or worn phone if the new camera controls, fresh battery life or performance address a specific shortcoming. The value depends on your phone’s condition and the amount you would actually pay after any trade-in.
Price, software and other qualifications
Apple lists a US starting price of $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro; TechRadar identifies 256GB as the base capacity. TechRadar reports starting prices of £1,199 in the UK and AU$2,099 in Australia. Prices vary by region and can change, so check the current local listing before deciding. Apple’s product page and TechRadar’s review provide the cited pricing details.

Apple cautions that water resistance is not permanent and liquid damage is not covered by warranty; do not treat the rating as permission for routine underwater use. Apple’s technical specifications state the limits.
Software features are not necessarily identical for every buyer. Apple says Siri AI is in beta in iOS 27, initially available in English and initially unavailable in the EU on iOS. Other features may depend on region, language and usage limits. Check availability where you live rather than assuming every advertised AI feature will work on your device at launch. Apple’s specifications outline these conditions.
Should you upgrade?
Base the decision on your current model and its condition, how much you would use variable aperture or other camera controls, your real battery needs, the size you prefer, feature availability in your region and your out-of-pocket cost after trade-in. For a recent Pro owner with a healthy battery and a camera that already does the job, the early reviews give little reason to upgrade automatically. For someone whose current phone falls short in a specific way, the improvements may be valuable. This is an early-review assessment, not long-term reliability evidence.
