What Is an IP Address, and What Does IP Stand For?

IP means Internet Protocol. An IP address helps networks deliver data to an interface; it is not, by itself, a person’s identity.

IP stands for Internet Protocol. An IP address is a network-layer address that helps computers and other network equipment deliver data to the right network interface across interconnected networks. It is a delivery aid, not a person’s name or a map of how to reach them.

What does an IP address do?

When you request a webpage, data is sent in packets across networks. The Internet Protocol carries those packets, called datagrams in its original specification, from sources toward destinations. Network components use the destination IP address to direct each packet toward the appropriate endpoint.

The IETF’s RFC 791 describes IP as providing for transmission of datagrams between sources and destinations identified by fixed-length addresses. It also distinguishes three ideas: a name tells what is sought, an address tells where it is, and a route tells how to get there.

What does an IP address identify?

An IP address is associated with a network interface or set of interfaces, not necessarily with one person or one physical device. The IPv6 specification, RFC 8200, defines an IPv6 address as an identifier for an interface or a set of interfaces. So an IP address helps with network delivery; by itself, it does not establish who is using the connection.

  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

IPv4 and IPv6: what is the difference?

IPv4 and IPv6 are two versions of Internet Protocol. The principal difference for this basic definition is the size of the address: IPv4 uses 32 bits, while IPv6 uses 128 bits. IPv6 was designed as IPv4’s successor and provides a much larger address space.

Version Address width Role
IPv4 32 bits Earlier version of IP; addresses are commonly written as four decimal numbers separated by dots.
IPv6 128 bits Successor to IPv4, specified to support a much larger address space.

ICANN’s beginner guide gave the rounded historical figure of about 4.3 billion IPv4 addresses in its 2011 publication, IP Addresses: A Beginner’s Guide. That figure explains the limited size of IPv4’s address space; it is not a current report on address allocation.

Does an IP address reveal your identity or exact location?

Not necessarily. IP addresses are used in ordinary network delivery and can be visible to the endpoints communicating over a network. The IPv6 specification notes that this visibility can raise privacy concerns, but that does not mean an address always reveals a person’s identity or precise home location.

IP itself is not a guarantee of privacy or security. RFC 8200 discusses protections such as IPsec and higher-layer tools such as TLS or SSH for certain threats, and notes that the IPv6 specification does not itself provide a mechanism to prevent denial-of-service attacks. IPv6 is an addressing successor, not an automatic security upgrade.
