The iPhone 18 Pro’s defining change is its 48MP Fusion Main camera with a variable aperture: Apple says the camera can adjust automatically or let you choose among four aperture settings in the Camera app. That gives photographers a new way to control depth of field and adapt to light, but the available evidence does not establish a measured improvement in image quality. Whether it is worth buying depends on how much that control matters to you—and what phone you use now.
What changed in the iPhone 18 Pro camera?
Apple’s 48MP Fusion Main camera adds a variable-aperture mechanism, a first for iPhone. Apple describes six laser-cut blades that move between aperture positions. The camera can adjust automatically, or users can manually select one of four aperture settings in the Camera app. Apple says developers can also use an API to access broader aperture control in their apps.

Aperture affects how much light reaches the sensor and how much of a scene appears in focus. Apple says its new control is intended to help with depth of field and low-light photography. Those are the manufacturer’s stated aims, not independently established results here. The available review material does not include a controlled camera comparison or measured gains in sharpness, dynamic range, or low-light image quality.

The practical question is therefore about control, not a proven leap in image quality: will choosing an aperture help you make the photos and videos you want? If you mainly point and shoot, automatic adjustment may be the more relevant change. If you deliberately manage background blur or lighting, the manual settings could offer a new tool. A week-long hands-on review by TechRadar highlights the variable aperture and Camera app controls as meaningful parts of using both Pro models, but that experience is not a universal test result.

Is the rest of the hardware a meaningful upgrade?
A20 Pro and cooling
Apple pairs the camera update with the A20 Pro chip and a next-generation vapor chamber. The company describes the combination as delivering its highest sustained performance in iPhone history. That remains an Apple claim here: no independent benchmark, sustained-load test, or heat measurement is established in the available evidence. For everyday buyers, the claim is less useful than workload-specific testing would be; demanding games and long creative sessions are the use cases where sustained performance is most relevant.
Battery life
Apple says iPhone 18 Pro Max has the largest battery-life increase ever on iPhone. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured battery result. Actual runtime varies with usage, settings, signal conditions, and test method, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed outcome for every owner.

Display, Dynamic Island, and software
Apple also points to a smaller Dynamic Island, iOS 27, Apple Intelligence, and Siri AI. Availability and capabilities for software features can depend on device support, language, geography, software version, and rollout timing, so check the specific feature you care about before making it central to a purchase decision.

These figures describe the comparison’s stated display context; they do not by themselves show that the newer phone’s screen is a meaningful upgrade. The comparison also frames the new Camera app controls as a point of difference between the models.

Should you upgrade from an iPhone 16 Pro—or an older iPhone?
There is no blanket answer. The clearest reason to consider the iPhone 18 Pro is the variable aperture and the control Apple has added around it. An iPhone 16 Pro comparison from Tom’s Guide provides a useful two-generation reference, but it does not establish that every 16 Pro owner should upgrade.
- Consider upgrading if: choosing aperture settings would change how you shoot, your current phone no longer meets your camera needs, or you have a specific performance or battery concern worth addressing.
- Consider keeping your current phone if: its camera, battery, and performance already suit your needs and the new camera controls do not fit your workflow.
- Compare Pro and Pro Max for handling as well as endurance: choose based on the size and form factor you prefer, and treat Apple’s Pro Max battery statement as a claim until you find a result measured under conditions relevant to you.
Prices and availability depend on market, storage configuration, and retailer; verify the current regional listing before deciding. Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on September 9, 2026. Preorders began September 12, and availability began September 18.
Verdict: the camera is the main reason to pay attention
The iPhone 18 Pro introduces a substantive new camera control: its main camera’s variable aperture can be adjusted automatically or set manually in the Camera app. That is a real change in how users can approach shooting, but the evidence available here does not demonstrate how much it improves finished images. A purchase makes most sense for someone who will use that added control or has another concrete reason to replace their phone—not simply because the update is described as massive.
