Answer engine optimization (AEO) does not replace traditional SEO, and there is no universal, officially disclosed score for the chance that an AI tool will cite a page. For Google’s generative search features, SEO remains relevant because Google says those features draw on its Search systems and index. For other answer engines, visibility depends on each platform’s retrieval and answer-generation process. A citation score is meaningful only when its platform, prompts, time period, and denominator are clear.
How AEO differs from traditional SEO
Traditional SEO aims to help pages be discovered and appear in search results, where outcomes can include impressions, positions, clicks, and conversions. AEO—also called generative engine optimization, or GEO—usually means work intended to make content more likely to be surfaced or referenced in AI-generated answers. The terminology is industry usage, not evidence of a separate system with a known optimization formula.

The approaches overlap: useful, distinctive content and technical accessibility can matter to both. But the visible outcomes differ. An answer can cite a page without sending a visit, and a search ranking does not establish that a page will be selected as a source in a generated answer.

What Google’s guidance means for AI search
SEO remains relevant to Google’s generative features
Google says its generative features retrieve current web pages from the Search index and use query fan-out: related searches around the user’s query. Its guidance says foundational SEO practices still apply, including crawlability, technical eligibility, and content that is useful and distinctive. In Google’s words, “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.”

Eligibility is not a promise of inclusion
For a page to be eligible for Google’s generative AI features, it must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Eligibility does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve the page, nor that it will be selected for a particular answer.
There is no special Google AI markup checklist
Google says site owners do not need a special llms.txt file or AI-specific markup for Google Search. It does not recommend breaking pages into tiny chunks or rewriting text solely for AI systems, and says there is no ideal page length. It also advises against inauthentic mentions. This is guidance about Google Search; it should not be assumed to describe every other AI platform.

What an “LLM citation probability” score can and cannot tell you
The reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal probability, formula, or Google-issued citation score. A number from a third-party AEO tool is that tool’s estimate—not Google’s internal ranking data or a platform-wide probability. Google advises evaluating third-party claims against official guidance; such services cannot guarantee performance or access internal ranking data.
A score can still be useful as a defined experiment. For a fixed platform, prompt set, and observation window, a simple observed citation rate is:
Rank #3
Observed citation rate = observations with a qualifying citation ÷ eligible observations
That rate describes only the tested conditions. It is not a guaranteed chance of citation for every query, a ranking measure, or a prediction of traffic. Before calculating it, decide what counts as a citation, whether multiple citations in one answer count once or separately, how to treat unanswered prompts, and whether repeated runs of the same prompt are separate observations. Keep the same rules across the comparison.
Make a score interpretable
- Name the platform and feature. Do not combine results from different answer engines into one unlabeled score.
- Disclose the prompt set and denominator. Report the number of prompts and runs, the number with qualifying citations, and how no-answer or failed runs were handled.
- State the time window. Results can change as platforms and their underlying sources change; a dated observation is not a permanent property of a page.
- Separate outcomes. Record source presence, referral visits, and conversions independently. A citation count alone does not establish traffic, trust, influence on the generated wording, or answer quality.
- Show uncertainty. Small prompt sets can produce unstable rates. Report the sample size and avoid presenting a point estimate as a precise forecast.
What platform metrics measure
Google Search reporting
Google’s guidance points site owners to foundational Search practices and Search Console measurement. Search visibility and clicks can show how pages perform in Google Search, but they should not be relabeled as an LLM citation probability.

Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance
Bing describes its AI Performance metric as the total number of times content was visibly referenced or shown as a source in AI-generated answers during a selected date range. Bing explicitly says this does not measure ranking, authority, importance, a page’s role within an answer, or quality. Sparse citation events may also be absent from the dashboard. Treat it as a platform-defined visibility count, not a probability or universal score.

Third-party monitors
Third-party tools may test prompts and report whether a brand or page appears in generated answers, but their output depends on their own platform coverage, prompt sampling, collection schedule, and citation rules. Ask for those definitions before comparing scores. A vendor’s estimate should not be described as an engine’s disclosed probability unless the engine itself defines and publishes that metric.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A citation can be selected without shaping the answer
Counting a source link does not reveal how much the source contributed to the generated response. A 2026 pre-submission manuscript by Zhang Kai, He Xinyue, and Yao Jingang distinguishes citation selection—a source is chosen—from citation absorption—its language, evidence, structure, or facts contribute to the answer. The distinction is useful when interpreting visibility metrics, but the manuscript is descriptive and does not show that particular content features causally force a system to cite or use a page.
The manuscript reports a dataset of 602 controlled prompts spanning ChatGPT, Google AI Overview/Gemini, and Perplexity, with 21,143 valid search-layer citations, 23,745 citation-level feature records, and 18,151 successfully fetched pages. These are counts from that study’s dataset, not a general estimate of citation behavior or evidence of an optimization formula.

Its described design uses 1,000 ranking-style queries across ten consumer topics and reports differences in source domains, source types, query intent, and freshness. That sample describes the study’s scope; it does not show that a search ranking predicts whether an LLM will cite a page.
A practical way to measure your own visibility
- Choose a narrow question. Select the audience, subject area, and platforms you want to monitor. Keep platform-specific features separate.
- Build a repeatable prompt set. Record the exact prompts and define whether each prompt is tested once or across repeated runs. Avoid changing the set mid-comparison.
- Set the citation rule before testing. Decide what qualifies as a visible reference to your page, and how to count multiple sources, missing answers, and repeated observations.
- Record results over a dated window. Save the prompt, platform, date, answer, visible sources, and any referral data you can attribute. Apply the same collection method each time.
- Report counts before percentages. Show citations and eligible observations alongside any calculated rate. State the sample and limitations so readers can judge how much weight to give the result.
- Use the result as a diagnostic, not a promise. Investigate whether the page is accessible and whether it offers accurate, distinctive value. Do not infer that one formatting change caused a citation from a small observational sample.
What to prioritize instead of chasing a magic score
Keep pages crawlable and technically eligible, and make them genuinely useful to the people they serve. Monitor ordinary search outcomes separately from AI-answer references. If you use an AEO score, treat it as a measurement instrument whose limits depend on its platform, prompts, sampling, and definitions—not as an engine’s hidden odds or a substitute for SEO.
