Upgrade from an iPhone 15 Pro Max only if a specific change on the iPhone 18 Pro Max solves a problem you have—and the net cost makes sense. The newer phone has a larger display, a camera with variable aperture, a newer chip and a higher Apple-stated video-playback estimate. But both phones have OLED displays with ProMotion up to 120Hz, and Apple’s specifications alone do not show that every 15 Pro Max owner will get better photos or a noticeably faster everyday experience.

Both are large-screen Pro Max phones, and the 15 Pro Max already has an OLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The 18 Pro Max adds 0.2 inches diagonally; that may help if you want more screen area, but it does not introduce ProMotion to a phone that lacked it.

Variable aperture is the clearest camera-control change Apple identifies for the iPhone 18 Pro generation. It gives the camera a different way to control incoming light, but the specification is not proof that the 18 Pro Max takes better pictures in every scene. The cited sources do not provide independent, side-by-side photo tests.

Consider upgrading for the camera if you specifically want the variable-aperture feature and are prepared to judge it against the way you shoot. If your 15 Pro Max already gives you the photos and video you want, Apple’s feature list by itself does not establish that replacing it will improve your results.
How much longer does the iPhone 18 Pro Max battery last?
Apple lists up to 43 hours of video playback for the iPhone 18 Pro Max on its UK product information page, compared with up to 29 hours for the iPhone 15 Pro Max in Apple Support’s specifications. These are Apple estimates under its test conditions, not guarantees of how long either phone will last in your daily mix of calls, apps, camera use and screen time.

Apple’s comparison page gives different testing dates for certain battery measures: July 2026 for iPhone 18 Pro models and August 2023 for iPhone 15 generation models. Will the A20 Pro make everyday use noticeably faster?
The 18 Pro Max uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip, while the 15 Pro Max uses A17 Pro. Apple also calls out a next-generation vapor chamber for the newer generation. Those are meaningful generation changes on paper, but the cited sources do not include independent performance benchmarks or evidence that ordinary tasks will feel faster for every owner. Treat the chip difference as more relevant if your own demanding apps or workloads are a current pain point than if you are satisfied with the 15 Pro Max’s performance.

Before deciding, compare the price available to you now with the trade-in value and any carrier offer for which you actually qualify. Check the offer’s term, required plan, and whether its value is paid upfront or spread over time; a headline credit is not the same as an unconditional reduction in purchase price.
Who should upgrade—and who should keep the 15 Pro Max?
Upgrade if
- You want the 6.9-inch display and the extra screen area matters in your day-to-day use.
- You specifically want to try the 18 Pro Max’s variable-aperture camera feature.
- Your present phone’s battery endurance is a recurring problem, and the newer model’s higher Apple-stated playback estimate is worth considering with the real-world caveat above.
- A demanding use case makes the newer chip generation relevant to you, and your net cost after a confirmed offer is acceptable.
Keep your iPhone 15 Pro Max if
- Its display, camera, battery and performance already meet your needs.
- You would be upgrading mainly because the A20 Pro is newer or Apple’s maximum playback estimate is higher, without a specific shortcoming to solve.
- The price after checking current local offers is not worth the changes you would use.
Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak, described camera, performance, battery and intelligence as areas Apple focused on for the 18 Pro. Apple’s launch announcement says the iPhone 18 Pro models use iOS 27 and discusses Apple Intelligence and Siri AI availability. Availability can depend on language, region and rollout status, so check Apple’s current details for the feature and location you care about before treating it as a reason to switch. The cited material does not establish that those capabilities make the 18 Pro Max a necessary upgrade for every 15 Pro Max owner.
