For most iPhone 15 Pro Max owners, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is a real step up on paper, most clearly in camera flexibility, processor generation, battery estimates, and screen size. Whether that justifies buying it depends less on the age of your phone than on what is actually frustrating you today and what the net cost works out to in your market.
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, and said availability began on September 18, 2026. The comparison below is based on Apple’s published specifications and announcement claims. No independent benchmark or hands-on battery test is cited, so the performance and battery figures are manufacturer estimates.

What changed on paper
The table lists Apple’s U.S. specifications for both models. Configuration, connectivity, and some features vary by market, so check your country’s Apple page before relying on a specific detail.

The camera: the largest documented change
Camera is where the spec sheets diverge most. Read the numbers as changes in flexibility and resolution rather than as a single headline upgrade.

Variable-aperture main camera
The iPhone 18 Pro Max’s 48MP Fusion Main camera has a variable aperture, which Apple lists at ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0. A wider aperture lets in more light and gives more control over depth of field, while a narrower one can give sharper results in bright conditions. The iPhone 15 Pro Max’s main camera is also 48MP but has a fixed aperture. Apple’s specifications do not by themselves show how much better the images look in practice, so judge this by your own shooting habits.
Ultra-wide and telephoto modules
Both new modules are listed at 48MP, compared with 12MP on the 15 Pro Max. Higher resolution gives more room to crop and reframe, but it does not automatically mean better low-light or colour results. The telephoto is the part most likely to surprise a current owner. The 15 Pro Max offers 5x optical reach through its 12MP tetraprism lens. The 18 Pro Max lists 4x optical and an 8x optical-quality option. If you shoot mostly at 5x, check how the 4x framing and the 8x option fit your habits before assuming the new phone is the better zoom camera.

Battery life: Apple’s claim and its test conditions
Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement describes the battery change this way: “iPhone 18 Pro Max also delivers the largest increase in battery life ever on iPhone.” Apple attributes the gain to its silicon and a larger battery.

- Apple says the 45-hour figure was measured on eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro models in August 2026.
- The testing used preproduction devices and software.
- The tests ran on LTE and 5G networks with a representative usage profile.
- The 15 Pro Max figures come from Apple’s 2023 specification page and are not a like-for-like retest.
These numbers show the direction and scale Apple claims. They do not predict how many hours you will get, and they do not convert into a guaranteed amount of extra use. A phone that drains quickly because of an aging battery, heavy messaging, or poor signal may behave differently from Apple’s test profile.
Display, processor, and charging
Display
The move from 6.7 to 6.9 inches adds screen area, but both phones are large and both offer ProMotion up to 120Hz. If you already find the 15 Pro Max comfortable to hold and pocket, the larger screen is a trade-off in one-handed use rather than a clear gain.

Processor
The A20 Pro is a newer chip generation than the A17 Pro. That is a real hardware difference, but the sources available for this comparison do not quantify a speed gain for everyday tasks, and any percentage figure you see elsewhere should be checked against its test method.

Charging and accessories
Both phones use USB-C. The 18 Pro Max’s MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging is listed at up to 25W, compared with up to 15W on the 15 Pro Max. You may need a new adapter to reach the higher wireless rate, but you do not need to replace a USB-C cable merely because you are upgrading. Charging results will depend on the charger, cable, and setup you use.

Apple Intelligence and Siri AI
Apple describes next-generation Apple Intelligence and Siri AI as part of iOS 27 on the 18 Pro Max, and says Siri AI is rolling out in beta. Do not assume a particular AI feature is exclusive to the newer phone. Apple’s feature requirements determine availability, and those can depend on OS version, language, and region. The 15 Pro Max is listed with Apple Intelligence support in Apple’s comparison listing, but the full feature eligibility for that model was not confirmed for this article.
Who is most likely to benefit
- Photographers who want adjustable main-camera aperture or higher-resolution ultra-wide and telephoto modules will find the camera changes most relevant.
- Owners whose 15 Pro Max battery no longer lasts through a normal day may find Apple’s higher playback estimate relevant, but should first check battery health and the cost of a battery replacement.
- Owners who mainly want a large, high-refresh display, USB-C, or a Pro-model iPhone already have those on the 15 Pro Max, so they are weak reasons to upgrade on their own.
- Owners who are happy with their camera, performance, storage, and battery should weigh the net cost against the specific features they will actually use.
Working out the real cost
Price is the variable this comparison cannot settle, because it depends on your country, storage size, carrier, and the condition of your current phone. Use this sequence to get a figure you can act on:
- Choose the same storage size on both sides of the comparison, so you compare like with like.
- Get a confirmed trade-in or resale offer for your exact 15 Pro Max, including its condition and any carrier unlock or payment plan.
- Subtract the confirmed offer from the current iPhone 18 Pro Max price in your market to get your out-of-pocket cost.
- Add accessories or carrier charges only if you actually need them, such as a new wireless charger for the higher wireless rate.
- If you are considering a used or refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max instead, distinguish between used and refurbished listings. Check the condition grade, any battery health disclosure, the warranty and return terms, the seller’s reputation, and the storage size.
When the upgrade makes sense
If your 15 Pro Max is working well, the 18 Pro Max is worth considering mainly for the camera changes, the battery estimate, or a specific repair need that you can document. Apple’s battery claims and camera specifications are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements, and a real-world difference will depend on how you use the phone.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is a meaningful upgrade on paper, especially for camera flexibility and Apple’s stated battery improvement. For a 15 Pro Max owner who is content with the phone, the upgrade is justified only if one of those specific gains matters to them and the net cost after a confirmed trade-in is acceptable.
