Atom’s Multilingual Support: Programming Languages and Interface Translations (Archived Editor, 2026 Status)

Atom supports programming and markup languages through separate grammar packages, and a community package translates its interface into Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Danish. Here is what that means for an archived editor.

Atom supports programming and markup languages through separate grammar packages, and a community package translates its interface into three languages: Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Danish. Both capabilities come from add-on packages rather than the core editor, and both belong to a project that was archived on December 15, 2022. Read everything below as a description of what Atom offered, not a guarantee of what installs and runs on your system today.

Two different questions behind “multilingual”

Readers searching for Atom’s language support usually mean one of two things. The first is whether Atom can recognize and color the syntax of a particular programming or markup language, such as Rust, Go, or YAML. The second is whether Atom’s menus and interface text can appear in another human language. These are handled by different kinds of packages, and each has its own limits.

Programming and markup languages

Atom organizes language support as individual packages named language-[language-name]. Each one is a grammar: it tells Atom which files to recognize and how to highlight their syntax. Atom’s core does not carry a single built-in list of language features, so the question “which languages are supported” really asks which grammar packages exist and are installed.

Languages in the archived package manifest

The Atom package manifest, at version 1.65.0-dev, lists a broad set of bundled language packages. The table below groups representative entries from that manifest. It is a development-era snapshot, not a count of supported languages.

Category Examples listed in the manifest
Programming languages C, Clojure, CoffeeScript, C#, Go, Java, JavaScript, Objective-C, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, Rust, TypeScript
Markup, styling and data formats CSS, HTML, JSON, Less, Sass, SQL, XML, YAML, TOML, Mustache
Tools and other entries Git, Make, shell script, Atom’s own source

Being listed in the manifest does not establish that a package is maintained, compatible with current operating systems, or working with the latest Atom build.

What a grammar package does and does not do

  • Recognizes file types and applies syntax highlighting for the language.
  • May include snippets and grammar adjustments. The official YAML package, for example, describes syntax highlighting for YAML files and accepts contributions to snippets and grammar tweaks.
  • Feature sets differ from package to package. A grammar package by itself does not add autocomplete, error checking, or code navigation.

Richer code tooling through language servers

Atom’s languageclient project provides a way for package authors to connect Language Server Protocol (LSP) servers to Atom. Whether you get completion, diagnostics, or go-to-definition depends on three things: the language server implements that feature, the Atom package exposes it, and the server is installed and compatible with your setup. Check all three before assuming a feature is available for a given language.

Interface translations

The community Atom Localization package README lists three translations: Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Danish. The README invites contributions for other languages. This is a community package, not an official or complete localization catalogue for Atom, so the three listed languages should not be read as the full set of interface languages the editor can display.

Which package answers which question

Your question Package type What it changes
Does Atom highlight a given file type? Language grammar package (language-*) File recognition and syntax coloring
Can I get code completion or diagnostics? Language server integration (languageclient plus a compatible server) Depends on the features the server and Atom package provide
Can the menus appear in Danish or Chinese? Atom Localization (community package) Interface text for the listed languages

Current status: an archived editor

Atom and its repositories were archived on December 15, 2022, and the repositories are now read-only. The project itself cannot publish new commits, so fixes and updates to these packages depend on whoever maintains them independently. The sources available for this guide do not establish whether any particular grammar or localization package is still maintained or compatible with current operating systems.

The Atom repository describes the editor as “A hackable text editor for the 21st Century.” That is the project’s own description, not a statement about its current status.

Checking whether a language works in your installation

  1. Open the settings pane. On Windows and Linux, choose File > Settings (Ctrl+,). On macOS, choose Atom > Preferences (Cmd+,).
  2. Select Install and search for the package, for example language-rust.
  3. Install the package and confirm it appears as enabled in the packages list.
  4. Open a file with the expected extension. Check the grammar name in the status bar at the bottom right. If it reads “Plain Text,” the file was not matched to the grammar.
  5. For interface translations, install the community Atom Localization package, then restart Atom if the menus do not change.

When comparing language packages, check file detection and grammar coverage, the syntax elements each package highlights, any snippets it includes, compatibility with your Atom version and operating system, and how recently it was updated.

Troubleshooting

  • No highlighting: the grammar package is not installed, or the file extension is not mapped to it. Select the grammar manually from the status bar.
  • Package installs but does not load: the package may not be compatible with your Atom version or operating system. Because the project is archived, expect this to be a permanent limitation rather than a bug the project will fix.
  • Language server features missing: confirm the server is installed, that it implements the feature, and that the Atom package exposes it.
