Turning off Fullscreen Optimizations does not break a fixed list of features. It is a per-app compatibility checkbox, and user reports about it are mixed. One Microsoft Q&A poster said it fixed fullscreen problems in most of their games, while other threads describe games minimizing on launch or fullscreen glitches that continued. None of the material found establishes that the checkbox reliably causes a specific failure, so the useful question is what changes for your app and whether that change helps or hurts it.
Where the setting lives and what it applies to
The Microsoft Q&A threads on this topic place the option in the target executable’s Properties > Compatibility tab, labelled Disable fullscreen optimizations. The threads describe applying it to a game or app executable, so it works as an app-specific troubleshooting setting rather than a Windows-wide switch. The setting is covered in community discussion, and the threads do not document how Windows implements it internally.

What users report it may fix
One poster in Microsoft Q&A: Games won’t play in full screen mode said the checkbox seemed to solve fullscreen trouble for most of the games they had tried. That is one person’s experience across their own library, not a success rate, and it does not say which games, Windows builds or display setups were involved.

The same material says nothing measurable about performance. No benchmark, frame-rate figure, input-latency result or Alt+Tab timing was found in these threads, so there is no basis for expecting a speed gain from the checkbox alone.

What users report going wrong
Two other threads describe problems alongside the setting. In Windows 11 applications minimize on launch with Disable Fullscreen Optimizations checked, the poster reports applications minimizing when they start. In Fullscreen on games glitch/lag, the poster reports glitching and lag that persisted. Neither thread proves the checkbox caused the symptom. They show that the problems occurred in setups where the option was in use or being tried.
Symptoms and the first check to make
The table below maps the symptoms in the threads to the first thing to test. Each row is a starting point for your own experiment, not a confirmed fix.

| Symptom | Where it appears | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Game will not run in true fullscreen | The fullscreen option in games doesn’t work, it only runs in borderless | Toggle the checkbox on the game executable, then compare with the game’s own display mode set to windowed |
| Alt+Tab fails between Steam games | Can’t alt+tab between my steam games on windows 11 | Disable one overlay at a time (Discord, Steam, GeForce Experience) and retest |
| App minimizes on launch with the checkbox on | Minimize on launch thread | Restore the original checkbox state and confirm the app launches normally |
| Fullscreen glitching or lag | Fullscreen glitch/lag thread | Test the checkbox change, then overlays, recording each result separately |
| Mouse position wrong after the window is resized | Windows 11 resized my game window so mouse position didn’t work | Not stated; the thread records the symptom without a verified fix, so note the window size and cursor behaviour before and after any change |
A safe testing procedure
- Find the executable the app actually launches. For a Steam game, this is often in a subfolder of the game’s install directory, not the Steam launcher.
- Right-click the executable and choose Properties, then open the Compatibility tab.
- Note whether Disable fullscreen optimizations is checked, so you can restore it later.
- Change the checkbox only for the affected app, then select OK.
- Reproduce the same action you tested before the change, such as launching into fullscreen or switching away with Alt+Tab. Keep the game’s display mode, overlays and background workload the same.
- If nothing improves or a new problem appears, return the checkbox to its original state and confirm the app behaves as it did before.
- If the symptom remains, test one other variable at a time, such as disabling an overlay or switching the game to windowed mode. Record each result separately so you know which change mattered.
A single impression is not enough to judge the change. Repeat the test several times, because a launch that looks fixed once may fail on the next start.

A Microsoft Q&A answer in Enable or disable Full-screen optimizations on Windows 11 (REGEDIT) ALL GAMES / Aplication describes a registry-based approach. The thread does not establish that the method is correct across current Windows 11 builds, nor whether it changes one app or system-wide behaviour. Use the Properties checkbox first, where the change can be seen and reversed easily. Treat registry changes as a separate step, with a backup and a clear way to undo them.

Other variables that often matter
Several troubleshooting threads point to factors that can affect fullscreen behaviour in the same way as the checkbox:
- Overlays: Discord, Steam and GeForce Experience overlays are suggested as possible causes of Alt+Tab and fullscreen trouble.
- Windowed mode: Switching the game to windowed mode is suggested as a test, to see whether the problem depends on how the game requests fullscreen.
- Graphics drivers and display behaviour: Driver versions and display configuration appear in discussions as possible factors. None of the threads confirms a specific driver as the cause.
These are leads to test, not confirmed explanations. If the checkbox change has no effect, these variables are where the next experiment belongs.

What the evidence does not establish
- How Fullscreen Optimizations is implemented in Windows 11. Some community answers describe the mode as borderless or virtualized, but those are explanations from users, and no official Microsoft technical document found verifies them.
- Whether disabling the feature has version-specific consequences in particular Windows 11 builds.
- Any success rate across games, hardware or Windows versions. The positive report is a single user’s experience.
The Bottom Line
Disabling Fullscreen Optimizations is a per-app test, not a known breakage list or a guaranteed speed-up. Change the checkbox on one executable, reproduce the same symptom, and restore the original setting if the result is worse or unchanged. Registry edits and other fixes should come after that, one variable at a time.
